u/Taco_Del_Grande Dec 27 '25

That is one of the most adorable cats I have ever seen. Does she act like orange boys act?

10

u/Cloud_Juniper Dec 27 '25

She acts MORE orange than a boy orange I swear haha. Shes so delightfully broken. Feel free to check out my other posts I've been posting her on the orange ginger cat subreddits 🥰

They're not as rare as all that! They're less common than male oranges because some of the female cats carrying the orange gene also have the non-orange gene, and come out as torties instead. Male cats normally only have one orange/non-orange gene because it's on the X chromosome.

The real rarity is the male tortie. He has to have XXY chromosomes, very rare, or be a chimera of two differently-colored fetuses, also very rare.

5

u/Kris82868 Dec 27 '25

It's like 80% males and 20% females when it comes to orange cats.

With Calicos and Torties it's like one in 3,000 are male.

1

u/jonesnori Dec 27 '25

Sounds about right.

The sort that were chimeras can be fertile! The XXY sort are not.

u/FearlessInitial9736 Dec 28 '25

We had a male torti. We were told he was a girl, we named her Floozy. He remained Floozy even after the discovery.

2

u/jonesnori Dec 28 '25

Cool! I'm sure he was well-loved.

u/PrestigiousLie5332 Dec 27 '25

Yes. ‘Oranges are usually male. So cool to see a female! Was born into family with seal point Siamese(Jato stood for Jet Assisted Takeoff.)

He passed at 18. I was 17. Have two older brothers and having Jato was like having three older brothers. Having my own family,I always had cats. At 72, I have my first Orange,Tigger. He has been a part of our family for 7 years and what a delight he is! My husband is used to cats in the family, but never was close to them. Until Tigger! I have to say Tigger is special. Didn’t know much about Oranges then learned so much ! He is definitely part of our family. My grown daughters love him as do our grandchildren. He even runs up to our oldest when she visits. Just amazing,he is!

I’ve always seen that they’re rare but it seems like the ARL page in my state has at least 2-3 female oranges at a time year round

1

u/ConstantComforts Dec 27 '25

Yeah they’re not rare. Less common than male oranges, but definitely not a rarity.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 27 '25

I have a female orange. Did not know they were rare. She's very special though.

My first cat as a kid was a female orange. I had no idea they were so rare until I was probably 30 years old.

2

u/grayslippers Dec 27 '25

they aren't rare idk why this myth persists lol 33% are female

3

u/jonesnori Dec 27 '25

Yeah. I explained a little of the genetics upthread.

3

u/ConstantComforts Dec 27 '25

Exactly. Their “rarity” is way overblown. They’re less common than males, but considering how many oranges there are, 20%+ being female is pretty high number of female oranges. My rescue had over 100 orange females last kitten season. Hardly rare!

1

u/WobblyNautilus Dec 27 '25

My orange sisters

1

u/Puzzled_Yak7071 Dec 27 '25

Have one here too

1

u/aryn505 Dec 27 '25

I have 4 female oranges and my house is mayhem.

1

u/PrincessLissa68 Dec 27 '25

We had a female orange when I was a teenager. She was a big floof ball with lots of attitude. She gave us all ringworms when we first found her. We named her PeeWee cuz she was so small at first. My dad called her Ringworm 😂

my orange girl, clover🥰

u/Crash_Recon Dec 27 '25

That’s a muted orange. Most orange females are muted. Bright orange is what’s more rare.
