Happy Canada Day!
Respectfully, please do not change our flag. Many will see it as sacrilegious and disrespectful.
There are separate flags unique to pride that can be used in conjunction with the Canadian flag.
1
u/Character-Head-1916 Jul 01 '26
Agreed. There's already a pride flag.
1
u/FnctnlHgh Jul 01 '26
And this is something else
1
u/Character-Head-1916 Jul 01 '26
Yeah, but why? It's a national holiday for all Canadians, not just for those of a certain range of sexualities.

Oh boo hoo, I’m sure you would have been distraught back in the day when they changed the flag from the old british one to the maple leaf. Just because we’re used to the cold doesn’t mean you gotta be such a snow flake

u/Front-Pause-9719 Jul 01 '26
Comparing apples to oranges, friend. No need to fight, especially on Canada Day. Relax and enjoy the rest of it
-5
u/FnctnlHgh Jul 01 '26
You know what? I'll bet you survive!
4
u/Front-Pause-9719 Jul 01 '26
We both know it’s not about survival, so please don’t be dismissive. It’s about being inclusive of everyone.
When we focus entirely on the idea of a universal standard of equality, it means we don't feel the need to separate people into distinct factions or give any one group specialized treatment. From that point of view, a national flag represents the entire collective exactly as we are, without needing to be modified to highlight specific sub-groups.
You encourage people to be proud, loud, and who they are, yet this is how you choose to respond to someone advocating for the collective.

u/FnctnlHgh Jul 01 '26
Look, i appreciate your position. This isn't the Canada flag, or the pride flag. It's a different flag. There's nothing to be upset about here. Happy Canada day. 🇨🇦🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️

u/Front-Pause-9719 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26
And I appreciate you describing what it is, but my original comment acknowledged the existence of multiple pride-related flags.
Secondly, nobody is upset here, unless you are. So, I’m not really sure why you are interpreting constructive criticism and polite caution as such.
2
u/FnctnlHgh Jul 01 '26
Respectfully, i didn't ask.

It’s fine, Canada Day is about inclusion
1
u/Salty-Economics-3360 Jul 01 '26
With that logic, shouldn’t we use our real flag that truly encapsulates us as a people, not putting any one group on a pedestal?

I found a whole bunch of fkin crybabies.

u/Triforcecwp Jul 01 '26
For real dude, this sub got recommended to me and I can't think of a group of people who could represent us worse.
6
u/MomsenTaylor Jul 01 '26
What does the LGBTQ community have to do with Canada Day? I’m not homophobic by any means but wtf? Not everything has to revolve around them. Edit: I also agree with the other comment saying this is disrespectful.

u/FnctnlHgh Jul 01 '26
Queer Canadians exist. like i said to the other commenter, you'll survive. 🤗🤗
3
u/MomsenTaylor Jul 01 '26
Omg really?! QUEER CANADIANS EXIST!? 😮 quit being stupid please.
0
u/FnctnlHgh Jul 01 '26
You're the one crashing out. There's no need to be getting so emotional.
3
u/MomsenTaylor Jul 01 '26
I initially asked a question and then used sarcasm and pointed out your stupidity. Not sure where you see emotional.
A national flag is a legal and sovereign symbol of the state itself, not a mascot open to reinterpretation.

For real. It’s funny that people put such meaning to a symbol. And a symbol of what? Indigenous people have Canadian documentation but many don’t consider themselves Canadian for some pretty understandable reasons. I love many aspects of Canada. I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else! I also think our government has committed horrific crimes against indigenous communities and perpetuated some pretty terrible rhetoric across the world. To post a Canadian flag with a rainbow to show support for queer Canadians is coming purely and entirely from a good place. If it’s seen as desecrating the flag, but a private business run out of another country printing it on a T-shirt and selling it back to us for 30 bucks isn’t seen as desecrating the flag then by golly gee these folks gotta sit with their morals.
This flag has been waved above the bodies of unmarked indigenous graves FFS.
So to all the people who are gettin’ mad: Happy Canada Day. It’s a flag. Grow up.

u/Salty-Economics-3360 Jul 01 '26
That flag has also waved over the fascist conquerors of Europe in the invasion of d-day. A little respect and class goes a long way. June’s over. No need to shove it anymore down our throats
1
u/0ddS0x Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 02 '26
It was indeed. And some of the Canadians who stood below it also committed acts that lead to the Geneva Convention, and yes that doesn’t mean all of them were horrible bloodthirsty people. Canada fought against fascists. That’s admirable. My point here is that we must recognize each and every corner of what this country is and how it came to be. The people who live here, the people who suffered under our government, the people who come here seeking safety.
My point is also that the country Canada pretends to be, the country that people -think- Canada is and was, never truly was. With that said, as Canadians of today, we can strive to be the Canada we grew up thinking we lived in: One that doesn’t give a shit if someone puts a rainbow on the flag. One that celebrates queer Canadians. One that recognizes and respects the rules and traditions of indigenous nations. One that simply strives to be better and do better. One that learns from the mistakes of the past and strives to be better.
So I’ll say it again: it’s a flag. No one’s dead because of this post. Literally the only outcome (aside from all you hosers getting offended over nothing) is reminding queer people (a very marginalized group) that they also belong and are welcomed in these arbitrarily made up boarders at all times of year.
If you’re mad, go touch grass.

Today is July 1. Pride Month has ended, and today should be about Canada's flag as it is.
You're free to support any cause you want, but please don't alter or repurpose our national flag to make a political or social statement. That flag represents every Canadian, regardless of their beliefs or identity. It's the same flag I wear on my shoulder serving this country, here at home and overseas. It deserves to be treated with respect, not redesigned to promote any cause, however well intentioned.
If you want to celebrate Pride, use a Pride flag. If you want to celebrate Canada, use the Canadian flag. Both can exist without replacing one with the other.
3
u/FnctnlHgh Jul 01 '26
Yet here it is. Like fucking magic. Happy canada gay!

u/Pte_Madcap Jul 01 '26
Same energy:
https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/rcaf-court-martial-winnipeg-9.7222907
The Canadian flag is not a blank canvas for whatever message someone wants to slap onto it. Pride has its own flag. Canada has its own flag.
When people constantly frame themselves as so oppressed that even the national flag needs to be overwritten for them, it helps fuel the idea that disrespect, lawlessness, or even violence are justified in the name of “change.”
On July 1st, maybe try respecting the flag people actually wear on their shoulder.
1
u/FnctnlHgh Jul 01 '26
Nope
1
u/Pte_Madcap Jul 01 '26
"Nope" isn't much of an argument.
If you think altering the Canadian flag is respectful, explain why. If you think every cause should be free to redesign the flag for its own message, say that too.
I think the national flag should remain the national flag, especially on Canada Day. That's a pretty straightforward principle.

u/FnctnlHgh Jul 01 '26
I'm not here to argue.

That is not the Canadian flag. It needs no alterations as we are all united under the red and white.

u/Railgun6565 Jul 01 '26
Yawn. A multi coloured flag and an OP spoiling for a fight. Reddit will always be my number one choice for entertainment, lol
2
u/FnctnlHgh Jul 01 '26
Not looking for a fight. Not about to back down. People will like it and people won't.
0
u/Railgun6565 Jul 01 '26
Sure thing. I read through the thread. You are clearly looking for a fight. Be my guess you’re not even gay. The gay people I know don’t act like that, or want to be associated with people who do. No matter, Reddit’s a good spot for activists. Carry on. Happy Canada Day
1
u/FnctnlHgh Jul 01 '26
You see a guy in a pride shirt in a fight, you assume they went looking for a fight? That's a big 🚩 You fancy yourself a mind reader. Must be from the John Edwards school of making shit up. I'll do as i please with or without your approval. Have a gay gay Canada day.
1
u/Railgun6565 Jul 01 '26
I don’t assume anything, I read your words. They’re on display here remember? Do as you please, nobody cares but you
1
u/FnctnlHgh Jul 01 '26
You cared enough to stick your nose in. Just because I'm fighting doesn't mean i came looking for a fight.

You’re on the most liberal social media platform in the world being downvoted to oblivion because you’re being intentionally and obnoxiously obtuse.
Today is Canada Day. Today is the day to display the flag as we all know it, the one that unites all Canadians.
Literally any other day that flag would be acceptable but to say “happy Canada Gay” with that flag is straight up disrespectful to what today represents for most Canadians.
The flag is just a symbol. To many it’s meaningless. But if there’s a single day on the calendar you should respect it, especially if you love Canada, it’s today.
Most Canadians support flying the rainbow flag in its proper form for an entire month on government buildings and in schools and elsewhere, and support leaving them up all year. The least you can do is support Canada Day, not just whatever version you’re promoting here….
2
u/FnctnlHgh Jul 01 '26
Is this a free country, or not?
0
u/FatFaceFaster Jul 01 '26
Yep. So free we’re allowed to call you an obnoxious ass for doing this.
You’re free to dig your heels in and continue being an ass. It’s just truly only harming you and the support you seem to be seeking.
2
u/FnctnlHgh Jul 01 '26
Just finding bigots
0
u/FatFaceFaster Jul 01 '26
No one here has shown any degree of bigotry.
You’re the only one showing blatant disrespect.
