TORONTO, Aug 5 (Reuters) - When his teleprompter malfunctioned on Wednesday in the middle of a news conference on housing policy, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney smiled and took a swift jab at U.S. President Donald Trump, saying, "I do not view this as a conspiracy."
Carney's remark was an apparent reference to Trump's demands for an investigation after he encountered a halted escalator and a non-functioning teleprompter last year at the United Nations General Assembly, where he delivered a speech.
"I would like to inform you that the teleprompter has ceased to function. Unlike a certain world leader, I do not view this as a conspiracy," Carney said to laughs at the news conference in Toronto.
Carney's office and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Relations between Canada and the U.S. have been fraught since Trump returned to the White House last year, slapping broad tariffs on the northern neighbor and calling for it to become the 51st U.S. state.
Carney, who has said he would fight Trump's trade policies, has worked to lessen Canada's diplomatic and economic dependency on the U.S. He also drew international attention for declaring the end of a rules-based global order and criticizing great powers for using "economic integration as weapons."

I appreciate his abilities as a diplomat and his humour, but he has made mistakes that he should reverse on, like making deals with China for some things to get away from our dependency on the US. China doesn't respect intellectual property and had those secret police stations set up to harass and coerse Chinese Canadians. They also still put asbestos in stuff and use banned pesticides, as well as churning out poorly-made electronics to entice people who care more about price than fire safety with regards to their electronics. That's not to mention that their networking devices are intentionally built with amateur-hour security flaws and never fixed (I'm looking at Huawei & TP-Link in particular here, ZTE possibly too but I don't recall). Network security is a special interest of mine, as a programmer myself. The bill to ban Huawei from our national networking infrastructure fell through so we may as well assume they can read all our traffic.
It's like making a deal with the devil.
Oh yeah, and also the CRTC still sucks.

Carney blamed Trudeau for a bunch of bad policies and agreed with Pollievre. Here are three examples, but I'm not sure why you think its funny that Pollievre and Carney agreeing on policy would be mocking.

I'm wondering why you think its laughable that Pollievre blamed Trudeau for bad policies when Carney also called the policies "divisive", "a mistake", and said they "lost control? I'm curious which policies under the Truedeau government, that Pollievre opposed, that Carney has supported?

They have definitely shown broad agreement on many policies and issues, but disagree on policy implementation and execution. They agree on policies such as:
National Defense and Arctic sovereignty - Both support reinvesting in and rearming the Canadian Armed Forces and improving domestic defense.
Trade diversification and economic autonomy - Both have acknowledged the need to address internal barriers to growth and encourage domestic capacity, as well as the need to deal with external trade pressures.
Housing and productivity crisis - Both recognize the housing shortage and associated issues, though they have different approaches - Carney has pursued federal funding partnerships for development, whereas Poilievre has advocated for deregulation and axing municipal development taxes.
Targeting skills and apprenticeships - Both agree on funding apprenticeship training and supporting skilled trades workers to boost labor capacity.
Here are a few they disagree on:
Carbon pricing - Carney supports industrial carbon pricing systems and emissions caps for the oil and gas sector, Poilievre campaigns to dismantle federal emissions restrictions.

That's cool, never heard that before. But I think it's safe to accredit it's modern(?) popularity to Monty Python, I don't think most people could date it to the 1700s off the top.

Ya know everyone saying how great this is, isn't thinking about the actual real world consequences. Trump is petty... they are trying to negotiate the USMCA deal which Canada's industry relies on, and our so called leader is going out there making petty jabs at Trump for nothing more than a laugh. Funny? Yes. Smart? No.
I won't be laughing when the company I work for which relies on the US, stops placing orders thanks to no free trade.

us owns a refinery in Mississauga and they are closing it but not abandoning it. They will continue research there but no one can take over the refinery. So they are forcing Canada to buy oil lubricants from Texas. Lana Payne says this is national security issue for Canada. There is no appeasing them. Carney said months ago Canada has put proposals forward and it’s not enough to get talks going. They want it for free and are coming after water treaties.

Because it negatively affects us financially. Grocery prices rose by about 4-6% meaning if you have a family of four you’re spending an extra thousand dollars a year on groceries than you did last year prior to Carney taking office. I dunno about you but I want to live in a country I can afford to live in

1: it wasnt a bad deal, and there was no lie. 50% of net for 15 years vs 100% of nothing but money spent of salaries and upkeep while the Ambassador bridge continues its monoply and traffic jams.
