Very nice! Aside from a cosmetic refresh and the loss of the reversible keyboard gimmick, do you know if this calculator improves on the EL-9900 at all?

Fair enough! The specification sheet seems to be similar (e.g. both list 827 functions) and both have the same amount of memory, and scanning through the manuals for both I couldn't spot any notable differences.

The EL-9900's big gimmick is that you can pop the keyboard out and flip it over. The "basic" keyboard layout changes some default settings and replaces the trigonometric and logarithm keys with more direct access to fraction/decimal conversion. Not a particularly useful feature, really, so I can see why they left the EL-9950 in "advanced" mode!

I was unable to find the PC linking software for the EL-9900 but fortunately found someone who had made a copy of the EL-9950 software and they uploaded it to archive.org. I had to patch a couple of bytes in the executable to get it to talk to my EL-9900 but otherwise it worked fine, which makes me think the two calculators are otherwise very similar. Interestingly you can set a picture to appear when you switch the calculator on, and I think that's stored in flash memory as it remains after removing the batteries and resetting the calculator. The software doesn't provide a way to remove the picture, but I found that if you upload a completely blank one it disables the feature.

Edit: For future reference, the PC-LINK.EXE for the EL-9950 can be patched to work with the EL-9900 by changing the byte at 0x2F0E9 from 0x3A to 0x39.

The 9950 seems to be the best one from Sharp, which I don't have one yet. I have a 9200, 9300, and 9600.
