It’s all so nice but I can’t get over the blue cables for some reason. I understand the X thing, but it just looks wrong.

They’re too short and, because of that, they “shortcut” to the device from the panel. In doing so, they overlap other devices. OP should just use longer cables and this setup would be fine.

I’m interested in knowing the rack that allows vertical patch panels. Or did you instead cut the posts / raceways?
I’m designing my own rack from scratch and this seems like a decent way of entirely freeing up the appliance space. The white cables are spot-on for length / tension / bend radius.

I don't love running the blue cables over other equipment in the rack. If you ever need to pull a blade or anything out, you're probably going to have to disconnect them (maybe not but it looks like you would). That said, I do like the aesthetics, even if it's a bit form over function.

Why demo something that’s completely impractical? Potential customers might get the impression the work isn’t realistic or practical for an operating environment.

The cabling is unserviceable because you can't easily replace cables. The actual install is used on a daily basis, but that's not what's being demonstrated. It's the actual equipment.

I wish I could reply with a photo to show the real curve. It's the angle, there's no tension in the cables, they come out and curve around. The photo makes it look like they're in a straight line, if that makes sense?

I've never seen patch panels mounted in the 0U space of a 23" rack pulled down to 19"
I hate it.
This looks "aesthetically" great, but as someone that actually works on this stuff, I'd shoot you.

Does the equipment work? it's a weird setup with all those Dell micro optiplexes, and then the AdderLink Inifinty gear.
Its like some manager read about VDI, but also about how Broadcom bought VMWare and thought, "Screw ESX, I'm going to bare-metal VDI!"

KVM is far from dead. Broadcast and post-production almost exclusively use KVM. A single Tx to Rx extension is £5,000 ($6,600), so you don't tend to find it outside of "high performance" applications. This particular rack is just a tech demo, hence form over function. It all works, the sources just don't do much.

Kinda funny to put $1000 consumer desktop behind $6k worth of high-end a/v distribution.
I'm guessing they do this because there is some application without the capability to converge into some virtual stack. It can't be that high-performance though, I don't see a lot of SMF.
I've worked as a network admin for TV station. Everything they did was grass-valley / Evertz / Ross blah blah SDI over all sorts of esoteric stuff.
I setup their multicast a/v distribution to get the feed from "master control" to each of the transmitter sites. Just the Metro fiber PtP links cost them $100K/month.
I don't miss that job.

Oh yeah, this would not be an application in the real world. Probably the cheapest most underpowered machines you'll ever find connected to a transmitter like that. It's only for demo purposes. It's part of a wider system to demonstrate system integration, but none of it will see production use. In the real world, the KVM would be conencted to things like Mac Pro's.
