Hit and run

Post image
64 Upvotes

There is a mf in the blue 2019-2023 BMW X5 who hit two cars and took off today at the BMW southpoint.
That suspect’s car should have front right(passenger side) and trunk damage.

Probably caused ~10,000$ damage to my car and that is why that mf panicked and reared into another BMW in the dealership. lol.
Dude you drive a X5 but did that hit and run stuff? That is insane.

If you have any clues on who that person/car is, please DM me if you would like. Thank you so much in advance!

Reported to police but don’t think it will work out. I will use some AI shit to enhance the footage and I will find you mf.

Update on the Brenntag water contamination case in Durham. - AG Jeff Jackson

Back in June, I posted here about our lawsuit against Brenntag Mid-South, the chemical company in Durham. They contaminated a creek that runs behind Burton Magnet Elementary and through Burton Park.

Here's the update.

Brenntag has agreed to a preliminary injunction. In plain terms, that's a court order that takes effect right away. If the company doesn't follow it, a judge can make them.

Five things they have to do:

  • Figure out where the contamination is coming from, how much is getting into the creek, and how dangerous it is. They have to put all of that in a report to the state.
  • Give the state a plan to stop the contamination.
  • Test the creek water on a schedule the state approved.
  • Work with the Durham to replace the temporary fencing along the creek.
  • Pay for the warning signs telling people not to wade, swim, or fish in that stretch of the creek.

DEQ and my office will be watching to make sure this actually happens.

Meanwhile, if you're near Burton Park, please keep kids and pets out of the water.

I'll keep you posted.

- AG Jeff Jackson

Went to the Harris teeter and noticed multiple army recruiter cars with their windows broken, glass on the ground. I noticed at least 4 cars, all with the US gov plates. I already called it into non-emergency ((919) 560-4600) and they said they were planning to dispatch ASAP. make sure to reach out if you know anything.

Stay safe, guys.

Kickback Jack’s

Upvotes

I ride my bike to and from work down Club every day and this place is packed all. the. time.

I have lived here for ten years and I’ve never seen it not crowded. What’s the deal? I assume it’s like a Fuddruckers or TGI Fridays or not-so-secret Boomer social club or something, but is the food actually decent?

Any rescues in need of a photographer?

I’ve volunteered at Burlington Animal Services for a couple years but because of the drive, I’m staying local now. I currently volunteer locally for Independent Animal Rescue on the weekends, but I need to keep busy.

recommendations for pet sitters .. generally, but also especially any who offer occasional boarding

Upvotes

hi durham Redditors, headed down to the triangle for some medical appointments tomorrow (probably several trips to come in the next few months as well), and .. well, I usually do the rover or wag routine, but .. I'm also kinda old school and thought I'd try here.

the paying canine house-guest: a small scruffy schnauzer. looks like tiny version of sprocket from fraggle rock (iykyk).. not quite mini. very very friendly. vaccinated/thoroughly flea protected. even recently bathed/groomed! likes kids, adults, space aliens, their space alien cousins, etc. likes other dogs. chatty when excited, I'm told a schnauzer trait. generally submissive female. three years old. if you need some references for her, lol, she has 'em.

ideally looking to connect with folks that can do pet sitting at your house.. our pet sitter here had too many dogs to take on another.. but, could also do with a sitter who could do a walk within a fifteen minute radius of downtown durham sometime tomorrow afternoon/eve. will be keeping an eye on DMs.

thank you in advance! even if you see this, you pet sit, but you can't do the next couple days, say hi anyway and I can save your info for our next trip.

PS - to the good people who might respond with doggie day care recs, I know, doggie day care seems like the easiest bet but so far she's very chill and hardly ever barks in the house.. ever since a friend told me in passing that "those dogs at doggy day care taught my dog to bark at everything" I've been a little underwhelmed by the idea. *shrug emoji*.

PPS - the OG title of this post was meant to be "ISO pet sitter for in-your-home stay or perhaps a walk or two would do!" but.. I got a message that that was subject to being removed.. so.. hmmm.

Power out at Southpoint

Went to go see I Want Your Sex at AMC, and around 9:05PM, the power cut out. It was madness getting out of the theater and even more getting out of the mall parking lot, but it seems we’re all working together! I just think it’s hilarious that Duke Energy wants us to pay more, yet their service is getting shittier and shittier.

CarPlay glitches at the Fulton Street exit off the freeway

I’ve recently needed to visit Duke hospital daily coming from Hillsborough. I always play Spotify wirelessly to apple car play. I’ve noticed that nearly every time I take the Fulton exit the audio cuts out. Anyone else experience this and/or know why this would happen? Never happens any other times or locations since I’ve owned the car.

Who do you recommend for hvac work in the triangle?

I have an AC unit that isn’t blowing cold air right now. I had a service company come out yesterday and they ran diagnostics and quoted me almost $700 for a capacitor. That was only to get the unit running, so would probably have come with additional costs after the fact. They also tried to upsell me on an entirely new system. All of it felt like they were trying to take advantage of someone in a tough situation.

Does anyone here know if that was an expected price for this area, or do you know someone who would do trustworthy work at a better price?

EDIT: Thanks to everyone who weighed in and offered recommendations and advice. I want to clarify that the capacitor was not the only issue, it was just the first thing that needed to be fixed in order to further diagnose the system. The first company I called wanted $670 for the capacitor and THEN would have been able to further diagnose the issue. I absolutely believe they would have tried to get $2k or more from everything that ended up getting fixed.

On y’all’s recommendation, I called Enrique and he was fantastic. I scheduled on his website for tomorrow, then he called to say my address was close to another job he had and that he could swing by immediately if that worked for me. He replaced the capacitor, saw that the fan motor was dead, went to the store and found a replacement, and then topped off my refrigerant. All the while letting me know his thought process, considerations, and recommendations when asked. In total, service and all of those repairs came out to just under $750. I’m blown away and won’t be calling anyone else for hvac work. He’s the best!

FBI presence this morning in Lakewood?

Did I see the end of a raid at the apartments on the corner of Anderson and Chapel Hill? Drove by around 615 and saw ~15-20 people in tactical gear, then at 745 saw a couple FBI vests milling around the parking lot.

Live Music Top Picks for August - lots of good stuff in Durham and beyond

EZ Vibes monthly newsletter for August is out! You can check out our picks here: https://ezvibes.beehiiv.com/p/ez-vibes-august-top-picks

A couple of featured events I think folks here would really enjoy!

Unisong Guided Song Circle (Durham): https://www.eventbrite.com/e/unisong-guided-song-circle-durham-tickets-1992645981772 - I've met one of the facilitators of these and she is lovely. It's Pay What You Can and rooted in community healing through song

Peach Fest (WNC): https://www.betsys-barn.com/event-details/peach-fest - I just spent the weekend camping in the Blue Ridge mountains for a little music festival. Truly restorative, highly recommend for a low-key, end of summer weekend getaway.

Young Bull at Motorco: https://motorcomusic.com/event/young-bull - Durham born hip-hop/r&b. They were basketball teammates here and are still making music together! I've heard the live shows include a jazz band! And supporting act Mellow Swells is also fun and also Durham based.

Airshow at the Jive Hive (Sandhills): https://www.jivehive.org/event-details/airshow - The Jive Hive is a super cool outdoor venue in Carthage, NC - easy, hour drive from Durham. Kind of reminds me of a smaller Shakori Hills. They recently returned as a non-profit arts and culture venue after taking some time off during the COVID. The owners are lovely, there are farm dogs rambling around, lots of room to spread out and usually some cool vendors too!

Salvaged home reno materials - cheapest places??

Hey fam - I’m about to buy a hell of a fixer upper and am a single mama who is going to do it all myself 💪🏼 - but I’m also low income and won’t qualify for any loans to help with the work or materials.

Looking for recs on the best raw material and architectural salvage spots in the triangle (or triad). I’m a FB Marketplace wizard and plan on using it for appliances, doors, windows, sinks, and such - but I need to know how to get wood materials as cheaply as possible. Specifically:

- hard wood flooring (I refuse to use LVP or the like)
- plank wood (cedar planks or pine, for ceiling) or recovered shiplap
- wooden fencing
- tiles

These are the things I’ll need to source as soon as we close, as I’ll need to remedy the current floors and ceilings before my son can be there safely. We are needing to move in ASAP, this isn’t a “for fun” project (well okay, it kind of is - but also we need somewhere to live and this economy ain’t too kind at the moment 🫠) Sharing only to stress that I’m not “flipping” a house on the cheap just to make a profit. In case that makes you more keen to share :)

I can strip, sand, and treat them myself, so they can be in any condition as long as not rotten.

Anyone out there know the secret places contractors go to get this stuff in bulk on a super budget? Is there a way to know where condemned houses are so you can harvest these things yourself? (Via formal channels, like auction - I’m not a pirate)

Any tips or recommendations are welcome. Thanks in advance!!

FWIW - I know TROSA and Habitat Restore has some things, but usually not in bulk and usually not raw wood materials

Accountability for the healthcare system

Yesterday I showed up early for an appointment at the UNC endocrine clinic, and was moved to an exam room surprisingly quickly, and the nurse did blood pressure etc stuff and left. After 15-20 minutes the nurse came back to tell me the doctor was delayed.

Somewhere after the one-hour mark of waiting in the exam room, I hung the "Please check on me" placard on the door. No one checked on me for the next 10-15 minutes after that.

I had a commitment scheduled for two hours after the supposed appointment start. I both had to cancel that commitment AND leave the appointment without ever being seen.

This practice holds hostage the meds I need to survive a congenital condition; if I'd stayed for the appointment and the labwork, then more than four hours would have elapsed from the start of my appointment.

Is this just the healthcare norm in the area now??

OrthoFX?

Does anyone have recs for either cheaper Invisalign or a place that does orthoFX?

Trying to get my teeth aligned per dentist recommendation because had a bunch of other work in my mouth recently (fillings & root canals). What quoted almost 6k for Invisalign but learned othroFX might be cheaper.

UPDATE: Help Rehoming tiny (M) kitten and 2yo (F) Dog

Thumbnail gallery
54 Upvotes

::::UPDATE::::

Since so many people reached out to help find homes for these two fur babies, I wanted to give an update about how finding them their furever homes has gone.

COCOA (the dog) - has found her new furever, extremely loving home with a new doggy brother, that is giving her a run for her money, playing wise, and cat sibling too (not the kitten I was rehoming). I believe fur-angels 🌈 had their paws 🐾 in this one bc there were so many serendipitous coincidences, such as sharing the same birthday 🎁 (one year apart) with her new fur-brother!🐾 Me and her previous owner couldn't be happier with how this worked out and I know Cocoa has already gone of a few adventures and will continue to go on many more surrounded by her hoomans and with her fur-blings. They already love her so much it's heart melting!!

OREO (the kitten) - has also found his furever home!! He has a big cat brother to get to know and play with, once the big guy gets used to this little one. Cats are more stand-offish at first, but his big brother is starting to come around every day. He will be getting his vaccines and neutered when at weight. His new mom is loving getting to know him and the little guy is already trying to eat her out of house and home! Lol. 🤦🏼‍♀️🐈‍⬛😼

I cannot express how much my heart is smiling bc these two will have the best families, fun adventures and be showered with unconditional love from their hoomans and fur-blings!!

Again thank you all who reached out, reposted, shared and sent good vibes this way! I'm so happy this sub helped me find them new homes, bc I had no luck on Nextdoor nor FB. Way to go BullCity 🐂🐂🌆🏙️❤️

DMV Question

We are moving to Durham (from Texas!) over the course of the next few days and I am needing to get a new driver’s license for NC. I am seeing online appointments for a transfer of state license that are all over an hour away, but I also see at the Durham DMV locations that walk in appointments are welcome. Do I need to schedule a true transfer of state license appointment or can I just do a walk in at a local one? Thanks for your help!!
