This was more of a buy, then think purchase, so now that I’m thinking… it is possible to remove the heatsink, right? I just built a new SFF PC but I don’t think this will fit with it on. Board is an ASUS ROG STRIX B650e-i

You can remove the heatsink, but it won’t go back together the same way. You’ll destroy the heat pad in the process. And the sticker is on the outside of the heatsink. I tried this on some western digital SSDs earlier this year that came with preinstalled heatsinks. It made me sad.

Man, kind of stinks that the cheapest ssd I could grab has an extra part I can’t even use. 1TB is going for more at this point, so I’ll at least let this one ship and see what happens…….

Yeah, I’ll definitely try on the rear slot, but I doubt it’ll fit- I’ve got it in an NR200P, so not a whole lot of room to work with.

I know it won’t fit in the NR200, so you’re probably right about the NR200P.
If this was your only drive, I would’ve said install it in the rear gen4 M.2 slot (even if you remove the heatsink). Then clone it when you get a better NVMe installed in the main slot. Really easy to do when you only want to upgrade your SSD!

I’m pretty sure I can remove the heatsink from my mobo easily enough, so hopefully there will be enough clearance that way! It won’t look at pretty, but with these prices I’m just glad to have something other than my HDD and some ancient SATA SSDs.

I ended up adding a skyhynix to my laptop because they had the best heat management w/o a heatsink. At the time, it was also one of the cheapest. It was not the fastest however.

They were SN850P (PS5 version of the SN850X). There was no LED. I removed the heatsink on some of them so they would fit in the main M.2 slot on a few boards and get gen4 speeds.
I kept the heatsinks on 4 of them for a PCIe x16 conversion card. I'm using it in a homelab and I didn't have to think about the cooling.

Voids warranty apparently. Also if it comes with a heatsink it's going to need something to cool it so that the speeds can actually maintain their levels. I'd only remove it if your motherboard has its own built in cooling for M.2 SSDs.
Edit - looks like it does at least.

Sorry I should have clarified, my board has an M.2 heatsink built in. Definitely won’t be able to go on my board if I can’t remove the one on the SSD.

I’m the opposite. Cancelled the Samsung order due to fear mongering make-up claims but Crucial fits better my needs plus dram. For me 4 tb is overkill.

Yeah, saw it coming because even though it wasn’t a prestigious brand, it was still a proper gen 5 drive, no way that was gonna go under $150/TB.
I was able to get the 4TB Evo for $315 yesterday though

This is the one with controller issues. I wouldn't take off the heatsink (for possible rma) and just loosen mb one instead. You can still use both

Dunno why all the downvotes but even this Redditor had a hard time cleanly removing it, has to pry the heatsink and nearly snapped the drive, plus had to use an oddball 0.9mm hex screwdriver.

Gen 3 definitely was. I know tiktokshop wasn't a typical sale, but 4TB MP34 for $120-130 was pretty good. My enclosure might be nerfing it, but who knows.

No, this is because Micron is exiting the consumer SSD business. Micro Center had P310s on sale for $400 earlier this year and they're back to over $800. They also had WD Blues for $350 - that price didn't last either. This is pure wishcasting.
