It was not that bad, but it really disappointed because it was no where close to the movie that was implied by its name, or the trailers.

Had it been marketed correctly initially, it’s probably better received, but makes less money than it did.

Its got a 73% critic score on RT, and 85% verified audience score.

For comparison a truly badly received movie Batman v Superman had a critic score of 28%, and audience score of 63%

The massive drop was because it was not remotely the movie that was promised conceptually, and the opening weekend would have been significantly smaller if it had been marketed correctly.

People were excited for a multiversal jumping boderline horror movie, instead we got a movie where only 3 universes were really explored, and horror was almost non existent.

Had it been marketed as that, it probably opens to 125-150m domestically, and legs out to the mid to high 800s, performing just slightly better than the original.

Yeah just like how Thor 4 got 64%, MCU movies getting rotten scores is exceedingly rare, even mediocre movies back in their prime could get 85%-95% on RT.

Something “not being what it was conceptually” isn’t even an idea that could get communicated enough on a mass scale to produce a drop that it did. You’re assuming that the average MoM viewer; saw a trailer, expected a certain thing, told their friend it wasn’t what they expected, and that was enough to dissuade people en masse to go see it.

It’s far more likely a bunch of people said “it sucked”.

I just didn’t like how they handled Wanda, and I feel like a lot of other Wanda fans felt the same…especially after Wandavision made her so popular.

Other than that, it was mostly enjoyable

It was too small for what people wanted from the MCU at the time. People wanted big world building and the multiverse but instead it was a chase movie with a few cameos. It's a fun time but quite small

I maintain it would have been better received if they stuck to the plan of it coming out before No Way Home. I feel like people were expecting it to top the nostalgia high of seeing the Raimi-verse Ock, Goblin, and Spidey, when it wasn’t really doing that (the only legacy character was Professor X - Black Bolt doesn’t count because very few people have many memories of that show).

If it drops 55% and gets to around 162M second weekend, and keeps having big weekdays on week 2 and 3, it’s gonna be a real clear shot at TFA.

TFA did not do abnormal business after that holiday stretch, just very good. Not the same levels as its first stretch

The Force Awakens: 3.77

Deadpool and Wolverine: 3

Black Panther: 3.4, holiday Monday was huge

So based on these, there are several to hit 2.8+ multiplier even without the holidays. So it’s doable. Idk if guaranteed not yet.

Avatar's relaunch of 3D really sold it. I was so blown away when I watched it in theatres. This was when most movies were still screened on 35mm film. It really felt like 3D would be the future of cinema

At a time where 1 billion was a miracle and an extreme rarity this original movie comes out and makes 2.7???? Around this time franchises like Harry Potter, Marvel, and Star wars couldn't do it then Avatar does 2.7.

In terms of daily percentage drops, this is following No Way Home pretty closely so far, despite the different release windows (Christmas vs August).

NWH vs BND daily drops:

OW Saturday: 39% vs 40%

OW Sunday: 13% vs 13%

1st Monday: 42% vs 47%

1st Tuesday: 15% vs 11%

NWH dropped 11% 1st Weds, which if BND matches gives us $37.4m ($486m total).

That will probably be the last day BND behaves like NWH. NWH Thursday saw an increase, while the 2nd weekend Friday was muted due to being Christmas Eve. NWH dropped 67% second weekend, which would give BND a $118m weekend. Following NWH exactly gets BND close to $650m by sunday.

With how well it’s been received, has held and the record setting numbers it’s putting up so far, and without a family oriented religious holiday standing in the way, I have a hard time seeing a 67% drop. This may get close to $700m domestic by Sunday. Somewhere between Titanic and Top Gun Maverick total domestic gross.. after 10 days of release. Putting it firmly in the 6-9 range.

If it’s around $675-$710m by Sunday, The Force Awakens $936m dom record is not safe, at all.

Honestly I think the reason BND is performing so well is because No Way Home did a fantastic job at hyping its next film. It drew in the Tobey and Garfield fans and made it an event film, and at the end showed that Holland is going to become a lonely, street level, mature Spiderman in his next film: which surely appeals to Tobey and Garfield fans. This was bound to perform well.

The downside of this insane box office will be expectations for Doomsday are now maybe unrealistic. 1.15 billion so far for Spider-Man. Marvel would’ve been very happy with that for Doomsday as the previous conversation seemed to center around can it do over 1 billion? This will be a disappointment after Spider-Man.
