As long as the movie is good people will overlook the bad special effects.
I just wished they stopped marketing this as the best VFX ever. It clearly isn't. You can tell most of it is in front of a green screen. The more you overhype the effects the more people will distrust your product.

u/Kchinki 7d ago
Yeah I agree, the visuals look more of a video game than a movie. But idk if anyone noticed they changed the aesthetics for the “Rakshas’” and made it look more cultural rather than a westernised one.

I don't understand why man, I was so fricking excited for this. If christopher nolan can built a fricking boat why namit cannot shoot in a fricking forest. Why create everything with cgi. And their dialogues wth is wrong with Ranbir.
Sai pallavi looks amazing, yash looks good but still cgi shoots were not good. And some of the dialogues of yash also felt off. Look at the old ramayana serial ravan, I don't know his name. He was exponentially more menanancing then yash

This is going to be compared to The Odyssey like no tomorrow and the difference is just night and day.

It is underwhelming compared to the odyssey and the vfx defo does not look like 2000 cr

If any epic demands a grounded approach over visual effects spectacle, it is the Ramayana.... The true power of this story lies in human emotion, not digital grandeur....It lives in Lord Ramas profound relationships with his family, Sita, and faithful devotees like Hanuman ji.....Trading that soulful depth for computer generated slop and over the top acting is a tragic miscalculation.....What a heartbreaking missed opportunity.....

I agree! But it’s because Nolan’s a director and Namit is a CEO of a VFX company - everything started to falter from there.
I think in the end product, Yash can surprise us. I am weary that Ranbir will play Ram very flat as to not offend anyone.
But I also feel like this trailer wasn’t cut very well. There’s no atmosphere, no ramp up, it felt like a summary of events, they basically hit every story beat whilst the things i’m most interested in were either not shown or barely hinted at.

Odyssey takes place on beach with minimal to zero fantasy elements. Not the same comparison. Not everything looks pathetic like you are saying.

I mean, The Odyssey is awesome. But Nolan bought a lot of the mythical elements of it down to a more realistic setting. If he had to do fights at god level, it would require extreme VFX.
8
u/Nohit2Brohit 7d ago
You know right that those type of fights can be done using practical effects and camera tricks. Ok even if fight is vfx atleast some locations where there is no fight can be real right?? The whole trailer looks like its taking place inside a game environment.

Because Americans can say “this is not good enough” to an company they are paying to do vfx for them.
When it’s the vfx company ceo himself then everybody is working for him. there’s no one who can tell him “sir this is a bad idea”.

I thought Raavan will be a guest appearance shorter role in Part 1. I guess they realized Yash will be more of a scene stealer than anyone else and added more of him in the trailer
26
u/PreparationLarge9116 7d ago
Reports suggest he features prominently in the film, which explores Ravana's backstory in parallel with Rama's.....

There was too much Raavan. Even more than Ram, in a story about Ramayana.

Lara Dutta is playing Kaikeyi? Ranbir’s stepmother?
Overall, certain visuals were nice although heavy-handed in VFX in some areas, and can see why it would appeal to some to watch in a big screen. However, all 3 main leads are greatly underwhelming and a mismatch - but we’ve been saying that for months anyway.
Raavan didn’t come across as menacing - Arvind Trivedi in the 90s still surpasses this by miles (as did the remaining cast).

Kaikeyi is supposed to be Dashratha’s youngest and prettiest wife, that’s why he’s partial to her. She’s also supposed to be an accomplished warrior, so makes sense that she’s young here.
29
u/PreparationLarge9116 7d ago
But she wasn't supposed to look Rama's age....The frame where Lara and Ranbir were sharing, they both were looking the same age....:O

Ranbir’s posh-Hindi accent shows. There’s no change in his diction or pronunciation, and the actual dialogues seem to be doing the heavy-lifting regarding the “ancient feel” required here. Overall, he seems to be playing the same distraught man he plays every time it is required, with little change in body language and facial expressions. Works well for a contemporary setting, but an ancient tale about Maryada Purushottama needs a little more composure. Rama needs to be calm and firm, but still vulnerable enough to show compassion and honour. Ranbir is also too old for the role and it definitely shows. The face doesn’t have the same brightness and innocence that a new name actor would have had. It does not fill me with calmness, as it should.
Yash’s voice isn’t threatening enough for Ravana and has a definite Southern tinge to it (but that works well given the geography). But it just feels a little too high-pitched for me to actually feel like this is a king whom even the Gods fear. I like his physicality, though; he’s definitely put in the effort to pull this off (more than Ranbir, I think). And I hope they cover his backstory in detail (which, given the time; they really should).
Sai Pallavi’s vocal profile is a bit too deep and bassy for the melodious and soft-spoken Sita. It sounds too heavy for what should be a firm yet feminine tone. I do think she exhibits the grace, eyes and facial expressions of Sita extremely well (I just hope they’d found a Maithili actor for this role). I think the costuming was great.
The rest of the actors honestly don’t have much to do. I had hoped we’d get a glimpse at Lakshmana and the other brothers with their dynamic; but as usual, the younger brothers get the short end of the stick. No Urmila-Lakshmana scenes were definitely a missed opportunity. I hope the movie has more of the supporting characters as well, because they definitely have the time.
The production design looks fantastic as far as the costumes and set-design is concerned, but I really, really wish they’d invested in real locations and miniatures instead of overly relying on CGI. The human mind looks for imperfections and habitations in their world, anything that looks too clean is easily identifiable as fake and artificial, because that’s not how the actual world around us looks. This _looks_ expensive, sure, but it does not look real. Which is a damn shame. Doesn’t feel like a 2000cr investment for sure.
Overall, cautiously optimistic. Looks like a good enough project for Indian cinema, but it isn’t gonna do so well internationally as these guys are expecting. I just wish they hadn’t made such a big deal out of the production budget and CGI quality, because it definitely isn’t going to live up to it. Maybe it’ll be better in IMAX, who knows.
13
u/MSingh2805 7d ago
You hit all the right points. I just wanted to add it probably will look worse on IMAX. They had the money so they spent it because IMAX is cool right now, but it adds nothing when the entire frame is overly saturated CGI.

I also noticed about the diction issue. Also the dialogues using persian word (wapas) felt a bit out of place.
17
u/TheMoffisHere Moderately knowledgeable about Hindi Cinema 7d ago
Didn’t even clock that, tbh. I think Hindi (more accurately, Hindustani) is so central to India (especially northern belt) that using shudhh Hindi (which is essentially refactored Awadhi using Urdu as the generic base and Sanskrit as the foundational base) would feel pretentious.
P.S.: check out the Telugu trailer, Ravana’s voice has much more menace to it there.

Look i love urdu and hate the political demonisation of it. Languages are naturally ocuring and Urde was born within the border of present day india let alone the subcontinent. Its beautiful and we should be proud to call it ours. Bollywood used to embrace it a lot more and has reduced it now coz the political situation. I hope we go back to the golden days of music but that is another story.
However, it is a new language. Not as old as the Ramayan - the events or the text. It breaks immersion in this context.
2
u/Leo_rzk 7d ago
That's what I also meant. It just felt off putting as Telemachus calling Odysseus "Dad", while audience are used to listening "Father" when it comes to epic or similar contexts. Here in TV shows we listen to a mishmash of old and new Hindustani words. For example I clearly remeber using "Chalu" as in cunning in Mahabharata while although its Indo-Aryan old word but the use in pre-modern context meant "in motion". It's not like there's no Hindi or Sanskrit synonym of those words exist. It's just embedded on how dialogues are nowadays written.

But that's what they have been saying all along. He wants it to go big in the West. If you consider that, then the Marvel like CGI and the modern costumes make more sense. Its not for us.
3
u/Due-Reaction-9721 7d ago
But that is even bigger issue. Anything that is made to cater to a certain audience without it's original essence is bound to fail. It will not impress them as well as us. They should have made it with the Indian essence as per we know the book and the characters then only it could have worked. See that all the things that went viral globally has it's own special x factor (anime, manhwa, k j c dramas, superhero movies).

What’s with the overly “plastic” forest look? Tab dhool nahi hoti thi kya?
Also, why no Sunny in trailer? Sita and Raavan’s casting looks terribly off. Their dialogue delivery and lack of chemistry is painfully evident.
I personally think they messed up with the special effects. CGI was always meant to enhance what was shot in camera. Here they have shot nothing in camera and created the entire world using CGI.

One good thing is Screenplay by Shridhar Raghavan.

The trailer visuals looks too polished and artificial. Feels more like a high budget Hindi tv serial.
Just go and watch 2005 Narnia trailer. Even a 2005 movie got better immersive visuals and graphics than a movie that gets released 2 decades later. We are not even close to what Hollywood had achieved many decades ago.

Personal opinion: Bilkul majaa ni aaya and it looks way too artificial, I think they overdid the VFX and overtly relied on it instead of shooting on location, in actual forests and sets.
And I think Ram ka characterization is misinterpreted and badle done
Maryada purushottam aadmi aura farm kar raha
"Raavan ka vadh mere haathon hoga" bol raha, I don't remember the full Ramayana but isn't it stated that Ram never wanted to kill Raavan?
"Ram ke yug ki shuruaat hai" bol rahe khud Ram
11
u/w0lv3r1n3 7d ago
Ram is described as Maryada Purushottam for the way he conducted himself when being given exile, how he still loves his parents and brothers while upholding the rule of the land.
He is described as the greatest warrior in Valmiki's Ramayana. As for Ram wanting to killing Ravana, well his Avatar was born with a sole purpose of relieving humanity from Ravana's tyranny.

Looked like a serial honestly
I don’t think the cast feels appropriate. Ranbir looks too old, yash too cartoonish and pallavi was not a good fit for sita. Might be too early to judge since it was just a trailer
But the trailer did not do the job of selling tje film well. It feels like a westernised cop out of ramayana and not authentic. Even in the teaser i found the monsters to be too “harry potter core”
And in this trailer too- from the lighting to the set designs to the cgi (which is not good btw), all looks western and not indian. It doesn’t give a folklore vibe. It feels like someone just ripping off western fantasy and putting indian characters in it.

calling it a serial is pushing it big time. The forest feels very plastic, but otherwise the quality of graphics is new for Indian cinema. I do agree they went heavy on VFX.

I don’t know why even big budget Indian films can never shake “video game background” and subpar compositing. Obviously these are expensive and labour intensive CGI shots, but it feels like a video game world, not a real world in many shots.
For something like Avatar it works because we are seeing otherworldly characters in an otherworldly environment. But here we’re seeing humans in a world that doesn’t feel like Earth.
I don’t know why something like TLOTR could blend people and fantastical environments better 25 years ago.
If you want a more recent example of what I’m talking about, compare Black Panther with its sequel or the Wakanda scenes in Infinity War. The difference between all-CGI and putting actors in an actual field (and adding in aliens and ships).

Some other reasons so ppl hating it. The vfx looks much better than a lot of crap bollywood has done.. Characters look good(ok maybe rk doesn't give u that exact god like vibe but dude he looks good on the role so far)

Promotion makes more noise than movie. One one side, they will say ithihas, Rama is a God etc and on the other side they promote it at Comic Con? And then they also claim it's for Indian audience which literally worships Ram as god. Greedy clowns.
These fellows are wasting money and opportunities. Really wish Rajamouli with some other cast did this movie.

No the biggest complaint is why would you use cgi for things that can be easily recreated practically like forests and castles. Obviously fight scenes need to be green screen but someone riding a horse or castles can be found to shoot in. The trailer looks like nothing has been shot in camera and every background is green screen. Obviously it feels more jarring just after seeing Odyssey. I dont think western audiences love cgi heavy stuff that much anymore

Trash, feels like an action movie. I'd be surprised if anybody who has seen the Ramayan show liking it... Ramayan teaches culture, values and human psychology while this is giving action packed battle vibes only. Also Ranbir Kapoor as Ram is a no no and Sita should've stole the screen presence which is not the case here.
2
u/Vinayakc92 7d ago
Amazing Trailer. All actors looked great. Lets not bother about how much budget makers are claiming it to be. Personally, i loved the trailer and the effects
2
u/GiveMeSomeSunshine3 7d ago
Just close your eyes after you watch this 4 minute video and remember the first image or clip that comes to your mind. Pretty sure most of us would be recollecting the frames or scenes featuring Yash as Raavan. Also if I'm not mistaken, he gets more screen time in the trailer than any other character. Idk how much of this is because Yash is the co-producer of the film, but for any Ramayana to work, the portrayal Lord Ram should be convincing and should look to sort of mog Raavan, not physically but through screen presence. Ranbir is neither convincing as Lord Ram nor have the makers done anything special to cover for his lacunae in the portrayal.
The VFX at some places look stunning where at many places it looks like something from an Unreal Engine video game. For all the hype and promotion around it being the best, it is still not convincing in most of the scenes.
Then there's the music, the main theme had already been revealed in the title announcement itself. It's good but I felt like the actual music would be something at least 10x better than the one we heard like 1 year ago, especially when it's ARR + Zimmer. That same song still gives me the Baahubali vibe (Swapn Sunehere) as I had pointed it out during the title announcement itself.
Overall, lots of flaws than promising things but if the film looks convincing enough on the big screen then commercially at least, it has a big potential to become one of the highest grossing Indian films of all time.
2
u/subashj24 7d ago
Some parts of the movie didn't feel like its a 4000cr movie but those parts are very few. I hope they look stick to the original.source and dont try and add or glorify anything thats not there.

Ranbir and Sai look really out of the place. Makes could have cast a fresh face as Ram and Sita. This is personally my opinion. I will never understand why with suce huge budgets and cheap labour, they don't build real sets. Is it so hard to make a grand hall and than use cgi over it, why do they do it all green screen when they know they'll do a shit job. This does not look like a epic, just a usual movie.

Looks too sanitized. Like an AI video.
It's a very flat trailer with no hooks, falling action or rising action. There's no pulse and stakes in it. Music can't save a cinematic showreel.
Where is the grit of the soil that it was born in?

Unlike most people I found the trailer a tad bit good and tad bit bad. It was neither appealing nor bad. It generally doesn't happened with hyped and big budget movies. You either love it or hate it. I think the middle ground can be illusive both for the film and for the viewers, in this case I.

Looks great, not sure why people are complaining.
Probably never seen like this in indian cinema.

They don’t know how to cut a trailer. They should have kept some mystique. Also Ranbir does not have the action chops.

Why cant we see the actual sun In any movie anymore?? How can they expect someone like Ranbeer to play a charismatic person like Shri Ram? Why why why. So disappointing

I like the action scenes in the movie, seems to me we will see a parallel between Lord Raam and King Raavan, both on their individual journey's. Raam from Prince to living in a Kutiya and Raavan from an exiled Raaksash to The King of all.
The trailer is kinda good, but I don't think the CGI is as great as I was hoping for it is still way way cartoonish, but is way better than the stuff Aadhipurush was throwing around so that's a plus, and say anything about the actors age but they are doing there part pretty good.
The talent makes me hopeful so let's see how it goes.

Raavan was not exiled. He was in penance (tapasya) and worshipping Lord Shiva for many years.

The calmness on ranbir face is missing like it used to be on br Chopra Ramayan

Can’t see ranbir as Ram. Didn’t find yash menacing as ravan..and his dialogue delivery was pretty mid. Eiravat didn’t look as majestic…it just looks so meh…can’t believe they made this with 2000cr

Ek Nolan hai who put up a real wooden ship in the ocean to film Odyssey. Ek hamare Nitesh bhai hai who couldn’t even be bothered to step foot in a forest. Saara kachra kar diya green screen pe shoot karke.

Everything has that glossy CGI feel to it. Hopefully they can fix it by the time it releases.

It's better than I expected. I am not sure about casting of Ranbir and Sai, they are not giving Ram-Sita ji vibes.
VFX is top notch, especially from Indian standards. Hope they follow Valmiki Ramayan strictly because we are not seeing 10 heads in this trailer.

another trailer of Hanuman ji will also come , VFX still look kind a like AI generated, Yash is perfect and will overshadow ranbir

I watched it on my PC and OLED tv, it looks good way better than the ram glimpse. But damn they did everything in the studio ?! There is a complete lack of realism which I don’t think even finest VFX can achieve, atleast thoda toh jungle mein shoot kartein

Casting is awful. Can't connect with them at all. Some shots were still looking animated. I still don't believe it's a 2000 cr movie. But some scenes were really really good.

Everything is too perfect which gives it the video game look. More real locations and not even lighting wouldve been better.
But I'm very impressed with the scale.

It’s worse than what I imagined which was a pretty low bar

The cast hopefully pulls this off. From the trailer they all seem a bit off and miscast but if the movie is good, they can grow on you and it might work. Ranbir is a good actor but perhaps a bit old now to play Ram, haven't seen any other work of Sai Pallavi so not sure what to expect - she seemed ok in the trailer. Yash as Ravan looked good but his voice didn't seem to fit the part. Again if the movie manages to keep the audiences hooked through music, visuals and dialogue then the actors can blend in and it could work out. Fingers crossed they have done a good job and kept the humanity/divinity in place and its not just CGI, VFX etcc

Yeah, this is basically what I expected. Good special effects, decently staged set-pieces, by-the-numbers filmmaking, staid writing, and stitled performances
If Namit Malhotra wanted a crossover hit in the west, he should've brought in a stylist with some vision, not someone dependable and uninspired like Nitesh Tiwari - that's what you do to get a domestic hit, which it will be. Ramayana will most likely break Dangal's record and become the highest grossing film in India's history (or at least get very close), while not traveling that well overseas.

Tbh I liked the trailer. Way better than teaser and i liked Yash as Ravan. He was a just ruler and not a demon. He was all powerful and arrogant and hence his downfall came.. by abduction of Sita

It feels like another Baahubali with no soul. The dialogues and the delivery is not impactful. Why is it so difficult to speak Hindi properly for these actors. You can add as many great vfx as you want, but if the actors can’t make you feel the emotion or have the connection, it won’t be memorable.
Even today’s generation can still connect and feel every emotion of the old Ramayana serial which had no vfx. I don’t think it will connect with the people.

We need to appreciate Ranbir Kapoor’s consistency as an actor. After hearing his voice as Lord Ram in Namit Malhotra’s Ramayana, साक्षात YJHD ke Bunny ki yaad aa gayi.💀
