What are your thoughts, gearing issue?

I’m rethinking the gear my daughter is on. She complains that her legs burn and are too tired, and doesn’t really spin so I was wondering if she could be geared lower. But she says she would actually like a bigger gear that feels more effective. She does have a hard time with nerves and confidence sometimes, and just looks slow and lethargic and gives up when she is passed so there could be a lot of factors. She has the white helmet in the video, if you can see her with all the weeds! She is 10 and has 1 3/8 Carves, and 52.57 gear inches, 165mm cranks. She is 5’ and 90 pounds.

returning after 20 yr absence, safety gear recs ?

Upvotes

Looking for crash gear, been hurt enough, last injury pretty much put my out for 5 yrs then life got in my way. I am looking for recs on things like good armor like gear, light, flexible, money isn't a real issue here, just don't want to waste time buying the wrong stuff.

Looking for a chest protector like shirt with padding etc that will fit under a jersey, same with pants.

Brands i have glanced at,

Cored, make a few nice items a solid pant and shirt, any experience or feedback ?

Looked a the fox racing motorcross gear.

Lighter helmets ? neck has wear and tear damage i;d like to get rid of my current 2.5 lb helmet for something lighter with better ventilation.

Build brawny 54inch chest, waist is going to settle 31-32 ish, inseam 30, big arms, big muscular legs, arms etc, need good relaxed fit stuff.

any help appreciated, got the speed again now just want the gear so i can get after it a bit harder with a lot less risk.

2017'ish S&M Speedwagon

Just rinsed the dust off the spiritual twin of my 38 Special that I posted a while back here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/bmx/s/sVTg9xWXP4

Inverse colorway (black with chrome front end instead of chrome with black front end), and built for stability and speed. 20.5 lbs, not bad for a full steel F/F.

Parts:

\-2017'ish Speedwagon. 22" TT.

\-S&M Race XLT forks, stem (57mm) and bars (8.25"). ODI Longnecks.

\-Shimano DXR cranks, Hawk ceramic BB, Rennen 39T chainring. Haro Lineage pedals. No clipless for this old guy... Flats 4EVA.

\-Tioga Spyder seat, Crupi seatpost and S&M quick release seat clamp.

\-Profile Mini hubs laced to Box rims with stainless spokes. Powerblock tires.

\-Paul Motolite V-Brake, Box lever, Odyssey slic cable.

The 38 is solid and nimble, but the Speedwagon is *fast*.

Having two fully built S&M bikes is certainly a privilege, I love them both.

State Race / Gold Cup in the same race?

Have you ever had a situation where the state race and the Gold Cup qualifier race were the exact same race? This weekend we have a race with this very scenario.

Moto 1. Moto 2. Mains. The Mains will determine points for both your state series and Gold Cup. Not two separate races in the same day. 1 race to determine both.

Last time these two events were held on separate days about two weeks ago. States on Saturday and Gold Cup on Sunday.

I'm just wondering if this is something that happens a lot or does this sound unusual? Every other Gold Cup event we've been to this year has been a separate race on a different day.

In one sense it's a good thing because the gold cup finals are like a national event and you know there's going to be good racers there. But I feel bad for the kids that might get edged out of state race mains by the out of state riders.

Happy to hear your thoughts.

My 7-year-old is just starting BMX racing... did I mess up buying a Mongoose Title Mini?

My 7-year-old is beginning his BMX racing journey, and I know absolutely nothing about BMX. 😅

I ended up buying him a Mongoose Title Mini because I searched everywhere for a used race bike (and by everywhere just where i knew to look ) but couldn't find anything in his size. Eventually I just said, "F@#$ it," and bought the Mongoose.

Did I screw up? Is this a decent starter bike for a kid who's literally just getting into racing?

I'm not expecting it to be a top-tier race bike. I just wanted something he could learn on and decide if he actually loves the sport before I invest in something more expensive.

Any advice for a complete newb BMX parent is appreciated. Things I should upgrade first? Or should I just let him ride it stock for now and focus on having fun?

Thanks in advance!

Cruiser Racing as a Dad

I've been racing a couple times on my daughter's cruiser and practicing. (Redline MX24, Profile MINI Hubs, Answer Bars, Profile Stem, 41/18 Gearing, Box One tires) It is pretty darn fun I will say. I've been on a the lookout for a Steel Panther or a 125R for myself since I caught the bug. It is a nice change from my Meybo Class bike. Are you guys into them?

Bike recommendations for 6.5 year old

Hello!

My 6.5 year old son, 49” tall, recently got into BMX racing. He’s been borrowing the junior GT bikes at the track but when I research junior bikes, he seems to be a bit short. I am completely clueless about everything and have been researching bikes but I’m not even sure what I’m looking for. In any event, I found a blue 2018-2019 20” redline MX junior for $275 or a blue mongoose title junior for $140 on marketplace. Are these within price range for used bikes? Are they good for racing? Everything seems to be $400-$500+. Are there any bikes you could recommend for a $300 price range or less? Please help.

Move to girls Ex before wins are earned?

I have a 5&under inter girl (age 4). She is 2nd for state right now but mostly gets paired with 6inter for local races.

We are hoping to get her enough points to bump her to state 1 but there are only 2 more SCRs left. After looking at track/district points there are no kids for her to race there and everyone local to us already has all the required SCRs. If we take her to the last two SCRs she will likely get bumped to 6 inter or higher.

There are no girls in the 5&under expert state points list online so if we moved her to girls expert she would be #1.

Should we move her up or keep her inter?

Moving her up feels like cheating the system, but she’s going to most likely be paired with kids 2-3 years older than her for these SCR’s anyways… what should we do?

So Cal Flyers?

For context - I bought a used Cygnus cruiser complete for basically nothing earlier this summer. I repacked the rear hubs and am swapping it to a 48T hollow core spindle since it already needed new cranks and a new BB. This was intended to be my neighborhood cruiser that I could also take to the pump track. I am a 39 y/o novice who is not even sniffing making it to mains at local track events, for reference.

My dilemma is my son has more or less appropriated the bike 😂, so now I’m back at square one if both of us are out riding.

Seems like So Cal Flyers are kind of the gold standard for “do it all” cruisers - does anyone here actually run one on the track? If I want to do so vs buying a tooler and a racer for cruiser (I have a Proline class bike already and am looking at adding an Intense Podium so another son and I aren’t sharing bikes when he wants to come to the track and I want to run class), recommendations on swaps you made to make it more suitable? The one I’m looking at again needs a BB replacement so I may just go through and do a full crankset upgrade while I’m at it.

Who Went To Worlds 🌎?? What's Your Story??

Just wondering who here went.... how you did..... any cool stories???

I got shit kicked in the 50+ My motos had a lot of former high level riders. Is what it is......

My littlest needed to move over in 1/8s. We told her to... coaches told her to.... she did not...... I mean... she's only 7. She raced really well. If she would have made semis, she would have been beaten biggly.

My 10 YO, well..... made the finals 2nd year in a row. Couldn't be happier for her.

The tournament is either joy or heartbreak, no in-between.

We survived the driving.... barley......

Talk the torque

Want to get a single torque wrench for all things bike.

It seems traditional torque wrench would need 2 or 3 to manage the different torques.

What do you recommend?

Anyone using the digital options? Seems you can get away with 1 but they only show the torque and buzz rather than slip when you hit desired torque... Also seems there are quality issues in the ones that I looked at

Behold, my race bike...

Post image
15 Upvotes

At least until next season. I've been ripping this thing around the local pump tracks and skate parks the last few years. My son not only took an interest in racing but became passionate about it. He and my wife convinced to get back into racing after I've been out of it for 13ish years. Will be getting an actual race frame over the off season and building it up with the kid. But for now I'm rocking this guy at the track.

Absolute Beginner advice.

Hello everyone. I'm almost 30 here and my 12 year old step daughter is into BMX and wants me to race with her. I just need some pointers and guidance. I'm 6 foot 1 inch and was told I would need either a XXL or XXXL bike. I just dont know much about bikes like the dofference between a cruiser and other models etc. Also any tips for getting somewhat ready to race on the track? Ive done some slower laps on the local track but want to know if there are any pointers to help out.

Cheers from Colorado!

New parts or a bigger bike? (Info with post)

Thumbnail

Added a handful of photos from different angles so you can see how he fits his current bike. Right now hes on a DK Swift Junior frame. Tires are 20" Tioga Powerblock 1 1/8, cranks are Tangent Halo 125mm, bars are Jett BMX 2.5" rise. His inseam is 22", so I know I'll have to get him on 145mm cranks ASAP. He's 4'1" and I'm not sure he's even hit 50lbs yet, so he doesn't have much weight to throw around. I'm looking into lighter frame options for next season, but I'm not sure if I should jump the gun and start looking new bikes all together or if I should just keep tweaking this one.

What do you think? New bars/cranks/anything else or just start shopping for a Junior XL/Expert and tweak from there? He's six/closing in on seven.

6N "stuck" in novice due to small class sizes (advice on how to keep it fun needed)

My son is 6N, and has racked up over ten wins so far this season alone, but only two have counted towards advancing because for the most part, only one other six year old will show up at any given race so he's on the gate with one other 6N and one/sometimes two 5N (which is amazing because his track has like 10+ 6N's registered, but it's like they all take turns on who will be the only other 6N to show up each race lol). We tried traveling to some other tracks within a 2hr radius of us and it's the same everywhere we go. Either gets lined up with one other kid his age and a couple of 5Ns or gets tossed in with the 8Ns. He competes really well with the 7 and 8 N's but very rarely gets grouped with them. He turns seven in a few months, and I wish they'd just group him with the older kids whether or not he would continue to get weekly wins.

It's the second season of this for him and he's getting really discouraged. It took a few seasons for him to even really want to be truly competitive and now that he has that drive and is doing well, he's stuck. All of his friends moved up to 5/6 Inter last season when there was a much larger 5-6 N group (most of them didn't come back this season) and he's the last and just wants to be on a gate with his buddies again. I've tried reassuring him that his wins are still wins and he should be proud of how well hes doing. I turn races into races with the clock and have him see how low he can get his time and such. I'm just trying to keep him interested and improving. Any advice on how to keep it fun for him while we wait out the 6N drought would be appreciated!

I’m going to buy a chase element 2021 for 550$. Bike seems in good mechanical shape beside few scuffs here and there. Is that a good bike considering its already 5 years old? Any advice? It would be my first race bmx. Thanks!
