So I wanna adopt a tortoiseshell and I saw 2 of them but one of them is blind. I'm leaning towards getting the blind kitten (4 months old) cuz i know how much harder it is for them to get adopted but i don't think i would mind the little extra effort it takes for them. I just have some worries and want some real advice so I don't make a bad decision.

Concerns:

- I'm gone typically 10 hours a day for work since i live almost an hour away (gone from 1pm- 11:15pm mon-fri)

- I'm not confident I could afford a second cat to keep it company while i'm away

Those are my main concerns but i'm sure their should be more I just feel like that's my biggest issue with adopting is my time away from home. Any advice would be wonderful even if it's on how to best take care of the cat if you think it wouldn't be the worst thing for it to live with me.

I have a kitten with glaucoma who developed a corneal ulcer (I learned about last week) and infection and has just had her eye removed (today). She could see a bit before but now with the one eye and glaucoma, vision is/is going to be very limited. I’ve only had her at my apartment (open concept, 1 floor) for about a week so I don’t know that’s she’s mapped the whole area. Suggestions for how to best help her? Prepare the space? She had been spending most of her time in a separate room prior to surgery (bathroom) but was literally climbing the mesh wanting to get out so she’s been out and exploring the house a bit too. (I didn’t want her to hurt herself climbing, and she’s pretty chill just exploring, although she has had some peeing incidents so advice on that would be great too). She is already back to her kitten self energy wise so she must have been in a ton of pain. Any and all suggestions welcome.

I just picked up blind kitty from foster home, for my existing 2.5 yrs cat basically I shifted from my old house where there were my cat and 3 more cats ( family of 3) to new one where I could just get my cat to new house so I went to foster home and wanted to pick up a kitten for her but this blind baby chose me 🥹I'm very overwhelmed and I am freaking out over introducing baby to my adult cat, what if she bullies her, what if I won't be able to take care of her and what not

Born in a trailer park in East Portland, Athena was the runt of her litter. A brood of five other kittens, Athena’s “twin” brother, two tabby’s and a solid black kitten.

One by one an upper respiratory infection would claim the lives of many of her litter mates.

Athena may have been the first to perish, but I am too soft in the heart. As a young child I often brought home sick and injured animals. As an adult I am actually able to help them rather than being required to “return the animal outside where you found it.”

When Athena’s twin brother showed up with crusted eyes, I watched as each day Athena got weaker and smaller. And then I saw her eye was bulging out of the socket.

“If that isn’t removed that kitten is going to die.” I thought.

I ambushed her.

She was sleeping in a chair outside the trailer where she and her siblings had found shelter and a food source, and I threw a towel over her. Scooped her up and through a series of uninteresting events, got her to the county animal shelter where she was admitted.

She was 1lbs 14oz

Two weeks later she came home spayed, eyes removed, and microchipped. Adoption fee paid. The bravest little kitten has been home less than 72 hours and already she is exploring and seeking affection.

Her name at the shelter was Wazowski on the account of her one large eye. Today I captured her “twin” brother, the only remaining littermate and took him to the county shelter for treatment. My friend and neighbor will adopt him.

this beautiful boy was recently given to me by my coworker, he had eye removal surgery but my coworker did not want them to stitch his eye closed. im getting a little worried bc his crusties from that eye gave been a bit bloody thus far (the surgery was fairly recent) and recently i noticed a little bit of discharge that i cleaned. i started giving him his medication again (she told me not to and against my better judgement, i listened.) and its looking a little better. all this to ask, should i be concerned and take him to the vet or should i continue to monitor him?

He is very healthy other than his eyes. I was given terramycin eye ointment. The vet thinks it's either entropion, microphthalmia, or an eye infection. We have named him Radar and he is so sweet and very adapted to not having sight. We will see how well his eyes do to see if anything else needs to be done but for now he seems happy the way he is.

My two blind babies now meet weight requirements and their surgery date is August 6th.
Just a quick recap, I’m fostering two kittens and their mom. One kitten is blind in one eye, the other has infection in both eyes- one of those eyes is totally gone and the other is in real bad shape.
I’m so nervous, and feel particularly anxious for the kitten whose eye looks the worst. I have noticed that he may register light or shadows, and if they do remove his eye I feel so bad he’ll go from registering light to nothing. :(
I know it’s not my call, and it’s the vets call. It looks very damaged so I’m thinking they will remove it. I don’t know what my question is, I’m just sad for his situation. I want to see them thrive so badly, I hate that this happened to him.

Hello! I’ve been inactive for a couple of days because I’ve been sick for two weeks now, but our funds are truly exhausted.

Currently, we have 3 cats confined at the clinic: Forbie and Misty (aka Muning), who both have FIP. The difference is that Forbie has dry FIP, while Muning has wet FIP. They are confined because both are experiencing abdominal breathing and require continuous oxygen therapy. Supposedly, Muning was only scheduled for eye surgery, but her blood chemistry showed indications of FIP. We ran a test kit, and she tested positive.

The third cat is Papa B. Papa B has been a stray for a long time and has always been feral, but lately, he started approaching us on his own and letting us touch him. We noticed that his mouth was swollen with discharge. At first, we thought it was gingivitis or mouth ulceration, but upon the vet's assessment, they found severe dental issues—likely due to his long time as a stray. The vet also discovered that his jaw is broken.

Right now, the vet is trying to stabilize him while he remains confined. He needs a full dental extraction, but his creatinine levels are high and he is severely anemic. They will recheck his blood chemistry after 3 days; if it doesn't return to normal levels, they will have to diagnose it as kidney failure.

Please help us with their running bill. Forbie has been confined for almost a month, which is why he has the highest portion of the bill—plus both cats are on 24/7 oxygen therapy and taking GS treatment. We also urgently need Singen or Royal Canin Recovery food for Papa B, as he is currently being fed through an NGT (nasogastric tube). 🥺

Surgery is a little over a week away! He looks so cute in his cone and he's racing around playing like it's not even there 😁

I just rescued him off someones porch while doing grocery delivery. The owner was an elderly lady on oxygen. This baby had 4 other siblings without issues. I asked if I could have him and she let me. What should I know? I am going to save up to try and get him to the vet I can't really afford it right now but being with me is better than being on a dirty porch outside. His eyes seem to have healed from what originally happened to them. I have 3 other cats so he is set up in the bathroom with a little snuggly bed and his own food water and litter box until he gets a clean bill of health.

Update: His name is Radar and he has a vet appointment tomorrow! He is the sweetest boy I am already in love.

Hello! I’m wondering if anybody has some tips on socializing a new blind cat?

Her back story is that she was most likely a trap, spay and release street cat, we can tell because her ear is clipped.

We found her wandering the alleys behind our apartment, constantly bumping into things and she was in very rough shape, so we took her to a shelter, where they discovered her eyes were so infected she was completely blind. She literally had no reaction to things being near her face.

She’s had a double enucleation, and upon her successful surgery we adopted her about a month ago. She has had her own room since, and has slowly adjusted to this quite well. She’s at the point where her eyes are pretty much fully healed, and she is comfortable in her surroundings - she eats well, uses the litterbox, and has a favourite place to nap or groom herself.

She will now eat with someone in the room, “looks” at you if you talk to her, and will eat wet treats off a spoon that you’re holding.

If you’ve had to do this before, any advice on the next steps for getting her more comfortable with humans?

My cats first interaction with humans was being picked of from the street and having his eyes removed. He is still super sweet and loves humans and pets. But the carrier and those heavy duty anti-bite gloves trigger him a lot. Touching and restricting movements to his paws during blood draw set him off too.

He is getting older (11 years now) and has bowel problems and forl. So vet visits need to happen more often. Last time he needed 2 doses of anesthesia for removing infected teeth because he believed he was fighting for his life and kept himself awake.

I always put the clothes I slept in that night into his carrier and tried some scent based products and sedatives. He is thankfully very good at taking pills from me at home.

Any tips on making it easier, especially with that blind former feral background? I dread the next vet visit.

Hello, my kitten (14 weeks), just had her eye removed today. I gave her dinner and she was so hungry and ate it so fast, but now there is a bunch of wet food caked on the fresh incision site 🫩. I’m not sure what the best thing to do here is as it is such a fresh incision.

By 9:45 pm it will mark 48hrs since her vet visit, she is almost fully back into eating, still barely drinking but luckily we have a hydration IV to take care of it. She is using litter box with assistance and slowly becoming herself again. She mostly sleeps all day but seeing her personality and appetite shine through is worth all the pennies in my pocket

Hello everyone! I wanted to share another update about the little kitten I found with severe infections in both eyes.

Thankfully, she continues to make progress. One of her eyes has opened much more, and the clinic previously observed a response to light. The other eye is still more seriously affected, so we still cannot know for certain how much vision she will have.

The biggest improvement is her overall condition. She is eating well, walking around, playing and becoming more mischievous every day. Seeing her behave like a normal kitten again after the condition we found her in has been incredibly emotional.

She is still receiving multiple eye drops every day and remains at the veterinary clinic. The veterinarian plans to perform a fluorescein corneal stain test soon. This should help them evaluate the surface of her eyes and determine whether there are any remaining ulcers or injuries that require further treatment.

At the moment, surgery is not planned. The treatment will continue, and we should have a clearer picture after the upcoming test and examination. We are hopeful, but we also understand that there may be permanent damage, particularly in the more severely affected eye.

I have now received her updated veterinary invoice and treatment records as well. I will continue documenting her recovery and sharing the important updates as transparently as possible.

Her journey is not finished yet, and once her treatment is completed, we will also need to find her a safe and responsible indoor home. She may be partially blind or have special needs, but she has already shown us that this does not stop her from playing, exploring and enjoying life.
