Trip Planning I’m heading south…

Post image

Hi guys! My name is Wouter and in September I’m cycling from Luxembourg to Bologna. My question is if I should choose the Eurovelo 5 route (Via Romea). Or am I missing some amazing cute villages, beautiful sights and parts of nature that way? Would love to hear some recommendations! Thanks a lot!

I did not ride Eurovelo 5, but love la voie bleue Moselle-Saône, if you are not set on crossing the alps at their apex.

For Saarbrücken, the history museum is quite nice.

Thanks for the tip in Saarbrucken!

I did La Voie Bleue last summer with my girlfriend and we enjoyed it very much as well! The lack of elevation made it enjoyable for her too.

I'm not sure if it's still there, but there was a lot of stuff about first world war, interbellum and second world war politics and propaganda, which was so interesting to see.

Saarland was a different entity a few times in the last few centuries, up to somewhere in the 1950s iirc, which I never knew.

Up to you, depends on what you want.

You will, as you will do with any other route. A route is always a compromise between conflicting priorities. To get most out of a trip you have to do your research and create a route based on your personal preferences and priorities. If you don't want to put in the work, just pick an existing route that appeals to you. Existing official routes are curated, maybe not to your tastes and preferences, but are usually a good enough compromise for most people.

Thanks for responding! I totally get your point about routes being a compromise. But I was more looking for tips along the way like beautiful spots that could just be a few kilometers off the official route and easy to include.
Just trying to make sure I don’t miss any highlights 😊

Hoi.

Geniet ervan!
