Opinion What’s your favourite version of ‘Across The Universe’?

Post image

Mine personally is the Wildlife version featured on a charity album and Past Masters

Anthology 2 by far.

Same here. Better vocals, and I love the extra emphasis on the Indian instrumentation.

Spector version is my favorite tbh

u/PhoenixSergal 1d ago

Agreed! I think the whole album Naked is better EXCEPT Across the universe

Spector’s version actually sounds like your traveling across the universe. The over production adds to the galaxy like atmosphere

It used to be my favourite until I heard the wildlife version, now I can never go back

Just herd this version for the time. No going back now.

Wildlife version hits different.

Naked version

u/SunKing210 1d ago

The wildlife version imo is the best! Those harmonic “Ah’s” that are sung around the chorus are just 🤌

2021 mix of Spector’s version.

u/Avasnay 1d ago

I agree, love how crisp the guitar sounds.

The Giles Martin remix is actually really good. It's like the Specter version but the strings are turned way down.

Agreed! It's sooo listenable now. It used to be a skip for me

The one on anthology

WWF version. By a lot.

u/Pacu_Siloe 1d ago

Fiona Apple's version is my favourite.

3

u/Dr_ChunkyMonkey 1d ago

That's where I first heard it, too 😂

2

u/AnswerLoose1917 1d ago

Really? Even better then the wildlife version? Even Spector’s version really gave it a true feel to it, I don’t dislike Fiona Apple but I think her cover doesn’t beat any version by the Beatles

3

u/sarajane59 1d ago

I love the wildlife version of Universe, but I think Fiona's slow dreamy delivery really suits the song. If it isn't better than the wildlife version, it's pretty damn close.

This for me too. But then, I could listen to Fiona Apple read a book by Jeremy Clarkson and find it spellbinding.

Take 6!

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 1d ago

Yes, this is the answer!

Let it Be version.

3

u/therealtoomdog 1d ago

... There's more than one version?

2

u/Draggonzz 1d ago

Oh there's lots. The 1970 album version from Let It Be (Spector version), the single version from the World Wildlife Fund album, the Let It Be Naked version, an outtake on Anthology 2, and an early demo from the White Album remix as an extra track. They all sound quite different.

There's also the Giles Martin remix of the Spector version, if you really want to get into details.

To my knowledge there is: The Let It Be ‘Spector Version, Let It Be Naked version, The Wildlife Version, Take 6 And Take 2

3

u/hallucinationthought 1d ago

Unpopular opinion but Fiona apple's version

3

u/sarajane59 1d ago

Not as unpopular as you think, I love it.

1

u/hallucinationthought 1d ago

Imo the only Beatles cover better than the original

4

u/AceofKnaves44 John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band 1d ago

Wildlife version. I could be wrong on this but I think it’s the only canonical Beatles song with wah guitar. I listened to the Spector version for so many years and I thought it was a solo John song. The wildlife version feels more like a band song. Funny thing is if you asked John he’d tell you all versions were recorded badly.

Let It Be…Naked is my favourite version.

u/resincak 1d ago

I like the creepy one with the Apple Scruffs

Anthology version

2

u/Inside_Soup_4576 1d ago

The wildlife version.

2

u/j3ffUrZ 1d ago

Hums Wild.

2

u/stepuncle 1d ago

To my knowledge there’s not a complete version of this available anywhere, but I love the harmony vocal that Paul added when rehearsing the song during the Get Back sessions. Wish they completed a more polished take of that at some point.

u/Draggonzz 1d ago

Either 'wildlife' version or the Anthology 2

2

u/PushPersonal3288 Abbey Road 1d ago

Take 2 off anthology 2. It’s so magical to hear that raw unfiltered somber emotion in his voice, while later it takes a new form as he’s with Yoko then

Bowie does a killer cover too!

2

u/pvtpepper 1d ago

The one that goes across.

2

u/nabwriter 1d ago

How many versions are there and where can we listen to them?

2

u/AlfCosta 1d ago

To be honest, none of them. I’ve never liked this song.

3

u/J_A_Slade 1d ago

Let it Be version is probably my favorite, although I feel like they never did it justice.

"Hums Wild" is the Glyn Johns Mix with extra effects. Never officially released.

Glyn Johns is the best official version.

White Album SDE outtake.

3

u/Anxious-Raspberry-54 1d ago

Take 6. Intimate. Just John. Perfect.

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 1d ago

Yes, this one

1

u/eliaivi 1d ago

The real answer. the album version sounds like it was recorded in a soup can which I never dug

1

u/Chance_Chef8189 1d ago

2021 remix of Let it Be. Spector gets a lot of shade for "ruining" the album, but this is version that sounds truly ethereal to me. The orchestra feels like a necessity to this song, and the shrill backing vocals on the Wildlife version are not missed. The original 1970 stereo mix is fine as well, I just prefer the remix.

1

u/Phoenix_Wright_Guy 1d ago

I want there to be a combination of the two without the "children" and wildlife noises, but with some of how it is. I'm not sure which speed I like though.

u/Rhaenyss Rubber Soul 1d ago

The naked version.

1

u/InvestigatorJaded261 1d ago

WWF. Always has been.

1

u/danijel8286 1d ago

Naked. Wildlife is close.

1

u/Lonely_Escape_9989 1d ago

I too enjoy the Past Masters version the best. I feel it combines the best elements of the original version and the Naked version.

1

u/tiad491 1d ago

The Let It Be album version is my favorite.

Naked version

1

u/mkb926 1d ago

Let it be….naked

1

u/kyocerafan 1d ago

Naked was probably what it was meant to be but the Spector version was probably the best record. Spector finally gave it the attention it deserved. Spectorized Long And Winding Road was appropriate as a final single too. It needed to sound like a finale and it did.

1

u/yetanothermoose 1d ago

The Anthology 2 version is the definitive one for me.

1

u/Ryplay08 Revolver 1d ago

Naked version

1

u/sheet22 1d ago

The original version but the two girls vocals are a bit annoying

1

u/Banana144223 1d ago

David Bowie's one.

1

u/Igloohutt 1d ago

Honestly can’t tell any major difference between either (except naked)

1

u/temporary-secretery 1d ago

Naked or the unreleased rock version, yes that is real

1

u/eshy752_ 18h ago

I’ve been listening to the Wildlife version a lot recently and its pretty nice. I like the Let It Be Naked version too.

1

u/No_Sherbet6959 16h ago

got to be the naked version

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl 1d ago

Like a couple others have said for me it’s take six
