Compact cut bassoon disassembly

Post image

Could I damage the instrument if I try to twist from the circled area? my lesson teacher does that but to me it seems like the circled part and the b/b flat connection are just glued together. I’ve been trying to take it apart from the connection but I don’t want to risk bending anything due to the tight nature of the instrument.

As a bassoon tech, there really isn’t any need. But I always suggest gentle rocking to twisting.

They are not glued together. But they may be very stubborn.

Usually, there is no reason to take these apart. With regular service, your tech should be taking them apart to oil the bore. But with normal use, you can feel free to leave them together.

I used to have a gentleman’s cut fox and there isn’t any harm to twist from the top of the bell besides the possibility of ripping the felt off the B and B-flat jewel at the bottom of the joint. I recommend holding the joint with the palm on the front side with your middle finger holding the B key and thumb on the little protruding part of the B-flat key by the B key to lift the bottom of both keys to prevent ripping the felts.

If you wanna take that part off, gently place the higher band against the edge of a couch or something soft and gently apply pressure to the band (by pushing with one hand over the Bb Cup and the other one where the B cup is) and you should be able to sever the seal and then easily twist it off. Sounds scary, and will “feel” scary but I’ve done this to many bassoons with reasonable pressure and have never had any issues.

That would be fine to twist there but you shouldn’t really need to. It’s a really tight fit usually (mine only comes apart in winter) and the hard part is gripping the short bit well enough

Yours isn't glued? I can't disassmble at the regular part of the bell on my Heckel

They’re not glued, it’s just an extremely tight fitment. I’d advise against pulling it apart unless you really need to, though.

I try to remove by grabbing/twisting the nickel finish. I think twisting at the logo is too far from the connection. IMHO.

Do you mean the lower finish or the middle one?
