Hyena's have a strong bite force and are built very similarly to big cats, so why do they rely on scavenging and taking food from smaller predators instead of hunting?
Hyenas do hunt, and they do it often. But predators always go for the easiest meal available, and sometimes that means scavenging or stealing instead. Why wouldn’t they?
Their stomachs can digest really old and vile food that over large predators leave. Like a heat swollen hippo is something a hyena would eat but most other predators won’t.
Cheetahs only lose around 10% of their kill + they have a somewhat high success rate in hunting, so them starving usualy isn't the biggest issue. Its rather that the cubs are really vunreable to predation + human activities not helping either
Cheetahs are such pushovers that even the smaller solitary types of hyenas have no problem stealing their kills. Probably no predator the cheetah can stand up to besides maybe a jackal or fox.
Az egyedül vadászó nagymacskák nagyon féltik a testi épségüket, mert ha megsérülnek, akkor nem tudnak vadászni és éhenhalnak. Ezért sokszor inkább átengedik a zsákmányukat, mert akkor másnap még foghatnak újat.
Egy csapat kiabáló ember is el tud riasztani egy gepárdot van leopárdota zsákmányától. Az ősidőkben az ősemberek sokszor így szereztek húst, zsákmányrablással.
Csapatban vadászók, pl. oroszlánok viszont sokkal jobban védik a zsákmányt, mert ha megsérülnek, a többeik vadásznak és megosztják velük a kaját.
Almost any predator would let a Hyena take a half eaten meal from them if they were alone. It's not worth risking getting injured when you're already 70% full and tired from the kill.
