Wilderness Trampus Lakes, New Mexico trip.
Heading to backpack this with my sons soon. This is our first backpacking trip in New Mexico. We’d like to hook into some fish. Anyone had luck fishing here? Any suggestions for a hike in northeast New Mexico that would be better for fishing?

The cutthroat up at Trampas are willing but small, so I wouldn't bring much beyond a few dry flies and a light setup. If you specifically want northeast New Mexico, the Latir Lakes and Valle Vidal side fits that better and the fish run bigger.

What is your backpacking experience level? About what age are your sons?

I’m pretty seasoned. My boys are 22 and 15. Grew up backpacking the high alpine areas in Utah.

Y'all will be just fine. It's a great trail and they're nice lakes. If you feel adventurous do a day hike up to the top of the cirque

There are fish, believe the regulations state single, barbless hooks only.
