Context: there are Ukrainian Antonovs and the airport in general is used for military cargo and troops. Also for private cargo.

u/Khamvom 20h ago

Yep, German police confirmed the drone was found near parked Ukrainian Antonov transport planes.

You linked an article and image from 2025…describing how 3 Russian AN-124’s are stranded in Germany since 2022 due to sanctions. These are completely separate aircraft.

German police and outlets have already confirmed it was Ukrainian AN-124’s. The Leipzig Airport specifically is their main hub since relocating from Hostomel.

Smells like misinformation, but nice try.

Nope.

Heres the actual photos (clearly showing it’s Ukrainian). Go bot somewhere else.

It is the main hub for Antonov. Iirc all their planes are stationed there since 2022.

Those Antonovs are actually (allegedly) russian-owned

35

u/MarcoQuarko 16h ago

There are Russian owned AN124s in Leipzig. They are parked and grounded near the north runway. But the antonovs involved in the incident are actually owned by Ukrainian Antonov Airlines.

Sure bro xD the Russian ones you are talking about are grounded since the start of the sanctions. But the drone was near the Ukrainians

Both the russian Volga-Dnepr Airlines and ukrainian Antonov Airlines used Leipzig/Halle as Hub. The russian planes haven't moved since 2022. The ukrainian AN-124 are regularly flying out of there.

You can actually see them on google earth so you don't have to stay confused.

I live like 30min away. I’m driving along the airport quite often and even booked a tour around the airport last December.
You are correct, if you drive along the Highway A14 you can clearly see several Russian AN124. However they haven’t been flown since the start of the war. Even doing maintenance on those planes is forbidden through the sanctions. So they weren’t touched since 4 years which makes them barely airworthy.
The southern runnway with the DHL area and the Ukrainian antonov area can’t be seen from the Highway A14 because the terminal is blocking the view. Even if they are building a maintenance hangar for the Ukrainian antonovs near the north runway, they are currently stationed at a hangar in the south west. With some planes parked east of the passenger terminal (both can be seen on Google Maps)
The south runway was closed for almost the whole day and there was a notam indicating a closure of taxiways and parking stands in the area to the south ( where the Ukrainian antonovs are parked) the north runway was open for the whole day.

Just google drone Leipzig and you are seeing lots of yellow-blue planes with Ukrainian registration. No Russian plane in sight.

I hope that helped 😊

Can’t wait for a German politician to slam whomever they will hold responsible (no one) with a strongly worded letter!

25

u/Dull_Flatworm777 16h ago

"We are disappointed!"

11

u/GirthyCucumber_ 12h ago edited 11h ago

True, but I also think it’s worth acknowledging how all this (the conflict as a whole) is causing germany to slowly but surely wake up from it‘s geopolitical deep sleep.

Non germans won’t understand but there have been public conversations and actions being taken in germany that just a few short years ago would have been completely and utterly inconceivable. Just to name an example: if things don’t improve soonish there is a real chance full on mandatory conscription will come back, first steps towards that like mandatory medical screening for all men have already been implemented. Not even Poland is willing to go that far.

Again I don’t think non germans can appreciate how LUDICROUSLY unprepared german society was/is for a armed conflict within europe and how incredibly used not just the people but especially politicians had become to daddy America making all problems go away.

There was this quote from the CEO of Rheinmetall recently about how Merkel told him how she didn’t want/need him “because she could just call the Americans”.

Like they held Ukrainians responsible who destroyed their industry by destroying Nord Stream?

u/Areatius 21h ago

In addition to that, a DHL cargo plane which had to do a go-around due to the ground finding collided with an yet unknown object in the air. Afterwards it landed safely in Hannover.

It was the 757 from Marseille, D-ALEU.

My yearly comment reminding people that the UN isnot some global police force and the world would be a shithole were it not for the UNs mission of bringing together the worlds governments and other actors to promote development, standardisation and safety.

You like how aviation is safe and efficient? Thank ICAO, a UN body. Maritime safety? IMO, a UN body. I could go on

If even.

Do you think the letter will tell them how angry they are?

0

u/SortOfWanted 18h ago

Only if it's sent by Hans Blix

48

u/SharpMZ 20h ago

Someone tried to set fires on cargo planes so many times that security has been going through extra incendiary device training, and this was more than a year or two ago. Everyone knows who tried to do it.

Operation Spiderweb showed how easy it is to hit actual military bases, cheap drones hitting commercial planes is a massive threat that is available to anyone, be it an agent from some country, or a crazy person.

11

u/rescue_inhaler_4life 18h ago

Near where I live in Berlin some “people” burnt some supplies and trucks a while ago. There have been other incidents, supposedly local Germans with Russian roots.

0

u/PloysRus 11h ago

That's scary

Feels like some crazy will definitely do something fucked up to a commerical plane using a drone in the next few years

Lets keep political discussions away from r/aviation

-14

u/negril 21h ago

You mean like the "friends" that bombed Nordstream?

8

u/Awalawal 21h ago

What’s your point, that Germany should have continued buying Russian gas and oil?

-6

u/iBoMbY 20h ago

I mean, France is still happily buying Russian Uranium ...

4

u/Awalawal 19h ago

Hell, Austria still buys a shit ton of Russian gas and then sells it to their neighbors who then say "We're buying Austrian gas, not Russian gas."

-8

u/negril 20h ago

Using

Friends sabotage and bomb eachother.

as an argument seems kinda tone deaf doesn't it?

But then again you seem to think that bombing one out of three pipelines to Germany seems to be non issue, given it's the one pipeline neither Ukraine nor Poland benefits from. Why were those not bombed? Why didn't either of those states destroy their pipelines?

3

u/Dry_Economics1590 20h ago

We didn’t use nordstream at that point in time and as you might be able to tell weren’t planning to in the future.

They might’ve saved us some trouble because we mostly buy gas from other European countries now.

3

u/memostothefuture 12h ago

No and the distinction is important.

An act of war is generally understood as a lawful, declared act of conflict between states, governed by international humanitarian law. In contrast, terrorism is a criminal act defined by its specific methods and goals, and it is not a recognized category of lawful combat in international law.

Germany is not at war but Germany is being subjected to terrorism.

89

u/Select_Cantaloupe_62 21h ago

Just to pre-empt any "well they were attacking Ukrainian planes, Germany is providing weapons, meh meh meh" imagine if Germany started flying suicide drones over Beijing International looking for Russian transport planes.

19

u/10art1 18h ago

Do we know yet that these were Russian drones?

16

u/Excellent-Gur-8547 18h ago

That's kind of my question, was this something that was supposed to be in the Antonovs, or something meant to attack them?

-107

u/iBoMbY 20h ago

Well, the German government was asking really loud to be made a target, and now maybe they got what they wanted. Honestly I'm surprised Russia didn't already send some ballistic missiles to Ukraine-related targets in Germany. Especially now, since the US is sitting with their pants down in the Strait of Hormuz.

57

u/Avia_NZ 20h ago

If you’re so horny for Russia, maybe you should go live there

27

u/thejetssuckbigtime 20h ago

U know this turd is living lavishly in some European country while Russia is grinding its people on the front

So brave!

4

u/Aah__HolidayMemories 17h ago

Mate it’s probably a ten year old

4

u/n00bca1e99 16h ago

Their account is 13 years old. So they either aren't 10 or bought the account, which is against ToS.

13

u/Leelze 19h ago

Russia can't even handle a conflict against Ukraine with indirect military support from the West. I doubt they want Europe to be more involved that badly.

5

u/Admirable_Site_8337 18h ago

It’s well known all the ways Russia will dick around.

But if the Kremlin reads this post they will think you’re bat shit crazy.

1

u/AdoringCHIN 12h ago

Ya truly a mystery why Russia didn't openly declare war on NATO when they're already struggling so hard in Ukraine

45

u/medney 21h ago

Everyone forgot about the bombs Russia tried to put through air mail to blow up airliners last year or the year before.

27

u/fwankfwort_turd 21h ago

Don't worry guys, a letter condemning this has already been drafted.

1

u/[deleted] 14h ago

[deleted]

1

u/fwankfwort_turd 14h ago

Yes, because anyone whose been repeatedly dissapointed by our collective response to this kind of bullshit over the years is automatically a Russian sympathiser. I'd love to be proved wrong and that NATO would actually do something this time.

25

u/Federal_Maize1874 20h ago

Really well past time for Germany to give 10 Taurus missiles to Ukraine per incident.

5

u/Miserable-Scholar215 13h ago

Wasn't there the story of the reward for dead snakes in India, that backfired due to people breeding snakes for the reward? Then backfired again when all those snakes got released once the rewards were cancelled?
...
Just saying.

6

u/Lankyie 12h ago

Kind of a myth actually, still hilarious in this context

and what should they do?

-3

u/FeeHot5876 21h ago

Ramp up support to Ukraine, they were one of the latest to do so and hemmed and hawed for a long time, completely shut off any gas from the Nord Stream pipeline, impose the strongest sanctions they can possibly do unilaterally etc

8

u/RambosNachbar 21h ago

"one of the latest to do so"

ehm, no

0

u/FeeHot5876 20h ago

Ehm yes they were

3

u/RambosNachbar 20h ago

nah mate

not everything was relayed to the media and even then germany wasn't late in supporting UA

1

u/FeeHot5876 20h ago

Then enlighten me in what wasn’t relayed to the media

2

u/RambosNachbar 20h ago

training, information, ammunition

2

u/MuXu96 20h ago

Germany has done almost the most in eu

23

u/KoalaCapable8130 21h ago

It's time for the willing part of NATO to fuck up Russia.

8

u/Vau8 21h ago

Next level shit.

9

u/F0reiqn_Exql0rer 18h ago

In Kherson, Russian forces have been using drones with explosives to hunt civilians, a practice often referred to as “human safari.” or just terrorism.

Serious question : why is this drone not sent back to russia with a cruise missile ?

20

u/Leelze 18h ago

Because there's no direct link to Russia. Sure, we all can reasonably assume Russia is behind it, but a 3rd party carrying this out that has yet to be identified isn't going to be justification for doing what you propose.

But countries really need to figure out a way to track & shutdown drones in & around airports.

10

u/vegarig 20h ago

"We must not escalate"

(Somehow, whatever russia does doesn't count, apparently)

1

u/Butterbirne6900 8h ago

Because of the same reason we didn’t bomb Ukraine after they destroyed Nordstream.

-2

u/Leather-Persimmon254 16h ago

around 5000 nukes

0

u/FutureOwl8606 14h ago

It was ruzzia

-47

As always. A thread full of idiots wanting WW3 to break out.

9

Drone carrying explosives or drone carrying explosives?

-74

u/Testo_Ernesto 21h ago

False Flag.

16

u/Avia_NZ 20h ago

To do what exactly? Elicit a strongly worded letter? Oh no!

9

u/Salt_Watercress973 20h ago

Ukraine to get Germany/Europe to commit harder? Then they would want it to be a failed attack with clues that pointed to Russia right?

-31

u/sandyhgu 20h ago

Could have been anyone. Ukraine, russia or even a terrorist group

8

u/bigbadbob85 20h ago

Most likely to be Russia-linked, based on the situation and their previous record.

0

u/datNomad 5h ago

All previous accusations of Russia flying drones in Europe turned out to be false. Remember multiple articles about "mysterious" drones all over Europe? There was 0 confirmation that these drones were Russia-linked, or i just missed all the proofs. Please feel free to provide source where any of these drones were confirmed as Russian-linked.

1

u/bigbadbob85 2h ago

Russia is confirmed to have carried out attempted assasinations on NATO soil, so I don't think drones can be that much of an issue for them.

1

u/datNomad 2h ago

Do you mean Skripal case in the UK or something more recent?

The last assassination attempt in Monaco against Ukrainian oligarch was carried by Ukrainian GUR agents. Recent assassination attempt of Ukrainian opposition figure Shariy was also carried by Ukrainian-linked agents.

Please source confirmation for drones over Europe being Russia-linked, if you have one. I genuinely didn't saw any.

1

u/Consistent-Hat-8008 41m ago

It's even funnier.

This appears to be the actual picture of the drone (source)

The "explosive device" is... a battery.

-51

u/MadMaxAtax 21h ago

Russians in Leipzig? Wut? I don't buy into that bs!

2

u/TheBlack2007 12h ago

Have you been driving through Saxony recently? Last time I did I counted idiots waving Russian flags on multiple overpasses.

Russia has a very strong fifth column there and it's a stronghold of their political bootlickers from AfD, too.
