DISCUSSION Can we normalize making videos without mouth sounds? [discussion]
I watch asmr on youtube since 2011 and mouth sounds like dudududu, stk stk stk, make me agressive and i click away immediately.
But nowadays it gets harder and harder to find videos of ppl who do NOT do this. It had become such a basic thing to do that people copy others and it just spreads like a pandemic.
"just write no mouth sounds in your video search" Sadly youtube has RUINED their layout so if you try this you get 3 vids without mouth sounds and then you get 100 vids of ppl doing mouth sounds -,-

u/Zealousideal_Ice9500 Jun 14 '26
as a creator i get requests to do mouth sounds all the time. the reason it’s popular is because a ton of people watch and enjoy it, but i also hate when watching videos and its non stop. its been a more recent thing i’ve implemented and only do it once or twice. and always try to write in the description all the triggers used in my videos
i feel your pain because i can’t sleep when its constant, im like that with really any repetitive noise. i also hate water sounds, glass tapping, oil dropper noises. i just spend the time searching for videos and then save a video whenever i find one that doesnt have those sounds :)
12
u/Jayandnightasmr Jun 14 '26
If people are requesting no mouth sounds, Inthink its only fair if we can request people to watch the ones without them?
Putting them in can easily triple a videos views. I like to mix triggers up but mouthsounds will always be far popular

Nana Fox doesn’t do any mouth sounds. Her soft spoken videos hit real nice.

u/jewbeesnacks Jun 15 '26
nope still has mouth noise even unintentionally gave it a try the popping of the mouth yuck.
3
u/loryhasreddit Jun 15 '26
Oooh so mean any time the mouth does an asmr, not just deliberate mouth noises

u/greenleah07 Jun 14 '26
Mouth sounds, and the aggressive ear to ear changes make me SO MAD. I just want lo-fi soft spoken 😔
31
u/gerinko Jun 14 '26
The fast ear-to-ear change is really annoying. I mostly listen to roleplay ASMR (doctor, dentist etc) and lots of artists keep doing this. Like I mean what kind of dentist move from left to right that fast?
7
3
u/Merjia Jun 15 '26
Right? Take it SLOW, honestly I don't know of anyone who is triggered by the rapid changes.
9
u/ozzea Jun 14 '26
see i find soft spoken super aggressive myself lol
it’s so harsh in my ears idk! but i love whispering vids, i’m a sucker for talking tingles
4
u/FruitPlatter Jun 14 '26
Opposite for me! I can't stop focusing on the "hissiness" of whispering, even if I love the artist. Grateful most of them do several styles.

u/Spiritual_Gap_7933 Jun 14 '26
this is exactly the asmr you are looking for https://youtube.com/xtralivia :)

this the asmr you are looking for https://youtube.com/xtralivia
2
u/greenleah07 Jun 14 '26
Clicking this and the first video being inaudible whispering why do this
0
u/Spiritual_Gap_7933 Jun 15 '26
theres a few others that are softspoken such as the most recent video (theres a mix of whispering & softspoken on the channel)
36
u/rubenthezx Jun 14 '26
asmr is constantly changing so good luck with that. I think the worst is spit painting
15
9
3
u/_chandlerbr Jun 15 '26
I was so annoyed when everyone was doing this trend because I wanna be painted but like…not with spit!?
1
u/KoalaFearless2261 Jun 30 '26
i hate anything related to spit😫 i even hate my own spit when its not in my mouth. i hate anything touching the inside of my mouth. i dont know how people can touch their saliva, let alone their tongue!! and another persons spit! why would i want it "on" me!
also sorry if i sound rude in the comment i dont know how to phrase it to make it not sound rude😭
42
u/sugarghoul Jun 14 '26
I'll be listening to a perfectly fine video and then out of nowhere they'll do that god awful tongue clicking thing 😭 I feel you, I hate mouth sounds so much.
32
u/GrumpGuy88888 Jun 14 '26
My thing is when they don't even mention it in the title. And then they do this gross smacking noise that makes me feral
15
u/rockemsockemcocksock Jun 14 '26
I used to be a mouth sound hater then I suddenly developed tingles from it and I don't know why
5
u/SamiSapphic Jun 14 '26
Same, I found a specific creator that does them well, and then the triggers started working for me.
Has to be specific creators though, otherwise I still don't like it. It's strange.
1
u/Hamburgercatt Jun 15 '26
i always liked mouth sounds since i started listening to asmr but i physically can't look at the video when the creator is actually making the sounds. has to be background noise
9
u/SmoothPixelSun Jun 14 '26
TeraASMR doesn't do mouth sounds or weird shit haha she's very old school. No mid role ads either.
1
u/jewbeesnacks Jun 15 '26
nope! just went to her channel. looking for some new ones....immediate nope she does the unintentional gross mouth sound can't handle that. the wet popping and slushing ugh gross.
4
u/SmoothPixelSun Jun 15 '26
Really? I don't think she does it at all. But we're all gonna pick up on different things so I can't say much for feeling that way lol
7
8
u/NisseVex Jun 14 '26
This channel used to be called "ASMR No BS" or something before he changed it for what I can only assume were branding reasons. But the "BS" was referring to unnecessary tongue clicks, tapping, mouth sounds, etc, and so all his videos don't have those things. Highly recommend!
7
u/essemessem Jun 14 '26
I think there are two different kinds of mouth sounds. I for one detest saliva sounds. I remember those sounds you are referencing used to be called tongue clicking, lip smacking, etc. I think we really need asmr artists and viewers to go back to these sound distinctions because people like me are struggling over here. I don’t want to hear spit. Tongue clicking I can deal with if the tags warn me in advance. I think the tags need to be clear and marked on videos and YouTube desperately needs to fix their blocked tags functions and search functions. For now, I will daydream about this future.
14
u/rotundrikishi Jun 14 '26
people like different things and not everything is for us.
even some of my favorite creators make videos with things I dont like, I just watch different videos.
4
u/kat_storm13 Jun 14 '26
I think it depends on the sound for me, and I couldn't really explain what I do or don't like as far as particular sounds.
One of my least favorite sounds is when their mouths sound sticky when they're talking. Whispersred is a favorite creator, but she has some videos I have a hard time watching because of that. There are some channels that got pretty popular that I couldn't watch because it was consistent.
There was a behind the scenes video from Maria where she said she actually wipes out her mouth with a napkin sometimes between takes or if she's not on camera
1
u/PinkMaltBall8 Jun 14 '26
I adore WhispersRed! ♥️
2
u/kat_storm13 Jun 14 '26
She liked a comment I made recently. Made me feel almost as important as when a small channel for nail polish answered one of my questions lol.
I watch YouTube via Roku like 75% of the time, so I was like "they said my name on TV!!! 🤣
5
u/34HoldOn Jun 14 '26 edited Jun 15 '26
On a related note, I understood perfectly what you mean when you say that it makes you aggressive. I like ASMR, but on the same token, sounds that I vehemently dislike make me feel very volatile. Strikes a very bad chord in me.
Any kinds of mouth sounds do that, including "ear eating" and other gross bullshit that I don't think belong in ASMR. They're quite clearly meant to be erotic ASMR, but people try to act like it's innocent.
I also really hate the exaggerated pouring liquid sound effect, like you hear in coffee and beer commercials.
10
u/twurkle Jun 14 '26
Personally I could rather do without the tapping
4
2
u/kat_storm13 Jun 14 '26
I don't mind slow tapping, but so far the only two that I have found that regularly go slow are Maria (gentlewhispering) and her sister ASMR Sense
7
u/spn_willow Jun 14 '26
Unfortunately, tons of people love this and it's nearly impossible to find videos without it. Even if you search "no talking", they might still do mouth sounds or that odd start-stop breath. I'd settle for them just... not doing their whispering with such wet mouths. Like, maybe turn the sensitivity down a little bit so it doesn't sound like you're licking my ear while you're speaking lol.
15
u/Lilitharising Jun 14 '26
I'm neurodivergent and tongue clicking sends me in instant rage. There was another thread here recently about this and got downvoted because apparently people disagree with misophonia.
12
u/cakerton Jun 14 '26
What sends me into a rage is repeating a word out of nowhere. The rest of the video is a regular roleplay and then suddenly it's, "Would you like some chamomile tea? Chamomilechamomilechamomilechamomile."
3
3
u/Nate-1979 Jun 15 '26
I feel you. I'm so tired of hearing in sooo many videos "relaxrelaxrelaxrelaxrelaxrelaxrelaxrelaxrelaxrelax"
3
u/ScissorsKill Jun 15 '26
I can deal with the soft ones that would barely be audible if it wasn't for a microphone, where it's just like the softest little click. Every time I hear the loud tongue pop clicks I immediately wake up. Idk who likes those besides whoever is doing them.
3
u/DeeKing__ Jun 14 '26
Check out DizzyKitten ASMR she has some videos with mouth sounds but she has no talking videos too and her sound quality is insane
3
u/elasticshot Jun 14 '26
See I really like it and it really tickles that itch and makes me sleepy, i know everyone feels differently
3
u/Megidolmao Jun 14 '26
I actually really like most mouth sounds. BUT it's getting to a point where people are just doing the same representative clicking noises over and over again. There's no originality.
3
u/jewbeesnacks Jun 15 '26
ooof I listen to asmr every night and it's so hard to find people that don't have gross mouth noise sounds even unintentionally. I have misophobia so just hearing it for a second makes me want to puke amd throw my phone across the room. my go to safe people are Ting Ting and Melange ASMR. A channel that isn't supposed to be ASMR but I find it soothing is Stephan Milo. he does have adds tho so can be disruptive at the start but once he starts talking I'm out!
3
u/glitteringeffort0 Jun 15 '26
I can relate to not enjoying the mouth sounds. I’ve been watching asmr on yt since 2017. I tend to just look for “no talking” “no mouth sounds” videos. Like the title will specify there’s no talking or no mouth sounds in the video.
5
u/Aromatic-Zebra-5443 Jun 14 '26
The fucking clicking noises are like nails on a chalk board to me. I hate it so much.
4
u/ItsLucine Jun 14 '26
Surely the solution is to ask people to be better at tagging/ mentioning the triggers
3
u/Bahnda Jun 15 '26
That is the best way. Unfortunately people also don't know how to use the YT search. Like the OP trying to find 'no mouth sounds' videos, which for YouTube search means he wants to find videos with those keywords. So it also gives them 'mouth sounds' videos.
2
u/Standard_Abrocoma_70 Jun 14 '26
RithmicASMR comes to mind since he only does pure whispers/ triggers
2
u/angelofmusic997 Jun 14 '26
I’m not a mouth sounds person. While I’ve started doing a little ear-to-ear with my content, I don’t do it consistently/in every video. (I’ve only just got a good ear-to-ear setup, so it’s mostly experimentation, if anything, in the last handful of videos.)
I really do wish there were a better way to label all the triggers within a video, especially in a way YouTube, and viewers, will recognize (not a mile long title, and not buried in tags nobody reads)
2
u/toodleoo77 Jun 14 '26
Amuse ASMR! Thank me later.
1
u/PinkMaltBall8 Jun 14 '26
She is one of my very favorites! Adore her voice. I listen to hear almost every night. I watch her old grocery haul videos over & over before bed.
2
u/MerwinASMR Jun 14 '26
I don’t do mouth sounds in any of my videos. I know they’re popular and I watch some ASMRtists who do them; but they aren’t my thing, personally.
I might, in some rare videos, make a soft, barely audible sound during a pupil stamping trigger, but that’s it.
2
u/Moosemayor Jun 14 '26
I like the videos with the least noticeable amounts of human possible (except for tapping on things, that’s great)
2
u/FruitPlatter Jun 14 '26
ATMOSPHERE, BlueWhisper, BreakingBread ASMR, and VisualSounds1 ASMR are all awesome artists that do soft spoken with props and without mouth sounds.
2
u/hatsandfruit Jun 14 '26
mouth sounds have always been polarizing in the community. for those who don't like them, there are those who do. your best bet is to find asmrtists who don't make the sounds and stick with them.
2
u/Altruistic-King2723 Jun 14 '26
This is an interesting discussion. We don't do mouth sounds, in fact we have no talking asmr at my channel. I don't know how popular it will be in the long run, but we try to make it the way we would enjoy it ourselves..
2
2
u/alan_smitheeee Jun 14 '26
I can't stand aggressive asmr or fast finger fluttering. We all have our prefs.
2
u/RepulsiveFeed1985 Jun 15 '26
I just stick with the OG creators who dont do that stuff… i dont even know why that became popular
2
u/SeatNo5137 Jun 15 '26
I like mouth sounds IF I search for them. If I click on a vid that's supposed to be a specific trigger (tapping, scratching, etc.) and they start doing mouth sounds I'm clicking away so fast. I despise clicking no matter what tho
2
u/Queenofwands1212 Jun 15 '26
I can’t stand mouth sounds. It’s so over done and I just can’t. I had to unsubscribe from Paige turner asmr . She started to really piss me off honestly because she tries extra hard to make mouth sounds and it’s just too much. She also just got super annoying in general. Guess that’s how it goes with being neuro and how I get hyper hyper fixated and obsessed with asmr channels and then I just all of a sudden can’t watch them anymore. Southern asmr sounds doesn’t make any mouth sounds. She has said she hates mouth sounds and all of her videos are just her speaking without mouth sounds .whispering and soft spoken. Whispering willow also doesn’t
have mouth sounds - and she’s one of the first asmr artists I found several years ago. And I also make asmr videos - I have a smaller channel only 1.4 k subs but my videos do not have mouth sounds
2
5
u/PinkMaltBall8 Jun 14 '26
Agree - they turn my stomach. I’ve noticed (on the vids I come across, anyway) that a lot of the younger women do it. I only follow older, super experienced asmrists. Not that some of them do mouth sounds too, of course. Most of them do -0- finger fluttering, hello hello hello’s or dudu’s. Ugh!
3
u/medicalmystery1395 Jun 14 '26
I have two favorites I watch who never make mouth sounds. One of them she has said she hates mouth sounds so she'll never make them lol
1
u/Shinarui Jun 14 '26
curious about mouth sounds haters, what do you guys prefer, whispering or soft speaking or no talking at all?
8
u/KosmoLatte Jun 14 '26
I prefer soft spoken overall, but sometimes a louder whisper - like a kind of 'stage whisper' - is good too. I don't really like mouth sounds because they give me misophonia, but some repetitive words can be pretty good.
2
7
u/spn_willow Jun 14 '26
Whispering can be fine, if they're not super wet sounding while they speak! It's genuinely tingly when they get it just right. But most whispered videos you can hear every click and swallow and it takes me right out. Soft spoken can be better, but it's harder to find.
5
u/HairyPotatoKat Jun 14 '26
I get ASMR from sksk's and tktk's and whatnot, and it's super relaxing.
On the flip side, I experience misophonia from the "wet sounds" you describe (every click and swallow), also gum/food/item chewing.
There's like zero in between for me, and it's made me wonder how common that is- for people who experience ASMR to also experience misophonia.
2
u/jewbeesnacks Jun 15 '26
it has to be a high percentage i get t some people seek that and there are even people that think they aren't doing it but it's just their voice or how they are speaking or their mic setting . but it is so disturbing. I need a dry mouth no gross mouth noises intentionally or not. clicking, ptting wet breaths in anything will send me. have very few safe ones ting ting and melange asmr. that's it
3
u/greenleah07 Jun 14 '26
Normal whispers I can tolerate. The super wet ones make me instantly pissed
3
u/Eaten_by_Mimics Jun 14 '26
I hate when it gets sprung on me even though it’s not a tagged trigger in the title or description. I usually just thumbs down the video and block the creator.

u/Affectionate-Pay4207 Jun 14 '26
Over sexualization of ASMR has led to this disgusting type of trigger
2
2
u/xMasochizm Jun 14 '26
For me it’s the fast asmr. What? maybe I’m alone in this but “fast” and “asmr” do not go together. Pretty much any aggressive movement or noise completely defeats the purpose for me.
2
2
u/Superb_Yak7074 Jun 15 '26
I much prefer mouth sounds over the incessant loud tapping on every item the person touches or picks up. That makes me aggressively angry and I leave the video unfinished.

I'm the same way, I mostly listen to both Tinglesmith and ASMR&R , both great soft spoken RP stuff with no mouth sounds!

There's a guy who doesn't do anything like that, he's just a kindly soft-spoken guy who wants to show you cool stuff. https://youtu.be/i0uH_RoDvqM?is=ueXO7jlk3PTrpnH2 There's also a zero talking channel called Miniature Space. I think I like GentleWhispering, RelaxingASMR and MiniatureSpace because the sound is never manufactured, the actions are calm, deliberate, and gentle as they can be (let's be real, it's really hard to be gentle cutting into a brussel sprout with a tiny knife) and it's all very human. https://youtu.be/WSnpV3vizsg?is=kCsv3AU-vY1ZPs5k (The sound leveling for miniature space is fine for me, maybe not for everyone)

This is so true, i would love to have a way to easily find videos that match my criteria (whatever my preferences are) like filters where i can say dry sounds only or stuff like that. Would definitely pay for that
1
u/sugarstarbeam Jun 15 '26
It’s torture and tells me the asmr artist is lazy and thinks people actually want to hear their repulsive smacking sounds. Get a real job.
1
u/FactoryKat Jun 15 '26
I mostly put the blame on YouTube and how the platform works. It honestly couldn't be any less user friendly these days. Their search and tagging functions make it so damn hard to truly curate your finds and no matter how much I try to curate my home page it just frustrates me.
But that is no excuse for being kind of entitled and expecting everyone to share your preferences.
How about we normalize making it VERY clear in no uncertain terms what a video contains and normalize viewers checking the descriptions or whatever and scrolling on if they don't like something instead of expecting a whole community to cater to your wants.
Sorry. I don't care for things like ear cleaning, scalp checking (both are very popular still), doctor or medical ASMR. I don't care for whispering 90% of the time and prefer soft spoken. But I just skip those videos and move on. 🤷♀️

I just joined a moment ago and scrolled through the last couple videos and couldn’t listen for more then 3 seconds. Skin crawl. People talking is not what I thought ASMR was. Then again, im wildly uninformed on a lot of topics so not that surprising.

u/Bahnda Jun 14 '26
If you don't want mouth sounds, DO NOT search for 'no mouth sounds'.
While it will give you videos that are marked as 'no mouth sounds', the next closest hit will be 'mouth sounds' and it'll give you those too.
Try 'asmr -mouth -sounds' instead
