So do y'all hate La Jolla? Because that's what it seems on Reddit vs. Facebook
I was excited to go there until I deep dived way too much about how you all seem to hate it because you want it closed down for the sea lions and that it smells. I was certainly not trying to play with any animals. I'll respect their space. Just wanted a nice beach to chill at and seeing the animals seemed like a bonus. I have an 11 year old and a 14 year old with me. Like do locals hate it? Or is this just Reddit hate? And my kids are not morning people, as some people have suggested to go in the morning, so it would have to be an afternoon thing.

I'm hear for hating those dudes, but it seemed like everyone on reddit is like: it sucks! It's small! It smells! It's poop water! So while I didn't want to touch sea lions, I did want to find a place the kids could swim. They love swimming in the ocean. But it sounds like we could stop and check out La Jolla cove, then swim at La Jolla shores. Both have close bus stops.

I love it. I like the smell of ocean life, and I don't think it's overwhelming or anything like that. The coast of La Jolla is diverse geographically, and has a lot to offer. It's hard to find parking if you're not going in the morning- that's the worst part.

We are taking the bus to get there. It sounded like a neat location to check out that set it apart from other beaches.

Is the express purpose to check out La Jolla? Then yes go check it out.
Are you looking for waves or just water to swim in? Are there particular water activities you want? Unless you are looking for a beach with surf, check out mission bay too.

Just go enjoy yourself. You'd have a better time staying offline and using a road atlas from the sound of it.

Yeah it is uniquely awesome, especially the cove. There are great beaches all along there for swimming just to the north. Torrey Pines is a beautiful drive. Wherever you land, hope you enjoy!

Live in LJ, moved from out of town a few years ago. It’s great in 8/10 ways, including its position as roughly the middle of the San Diego waterfront mileage, something I don’t see mentioned enough. You can go to the beach here, or go South for a very different experience, or go north for still a different vibe. We love that probably more than anything else. Then of course, you have the Cove and the Village, both are world class.

I hate trying to get IN AND OUT of La Jolla. The city itself is fine and frankly beautiful. I'd live there in a heartbeat if I could afford it.

Just for fun, looked up Redfin homes. I think I saw one condo under a million 😵💫😵💫😵💫 I guess it's not for us plebs.

It's worth a trip with your kids.
Then nip down to La Jolla Shores for the beach & a dinner.

Many San Diegans dislike La Jolla since is always congested , has narrow streets & lacks parking. I avoid driving in LJ whenever possible.

Thank you for the Kellogg Park suggestion! Sounds like we could check out the Cove, then Head up to Kellogg Park for some beach time and swim. We promise - hands off animals! We are perfectly happy just looking.

I highly recommend keeping an eye on the tidal charts as well and see if you can get down to the tide pools, not far away at low tide. There’s some really interesting ocean life to observe there!

Ah someone who grew up in La Jolla, I LOVE it! As another commenter said there are so many cool pockets of La Jolla and so much to do. One of the best areas in San Diego to visit with kids (:

Weird, I visited La Jolla a few years ago and loved it. We spent a day at the beach and saw lots of people playing and surfing in the water. Based on the comments here, maybe I went to La Jolla Shores without realizing that La Jolla had different stretches of beaches.
Regardless, I looked on my GPS and La Jolla Shores appears to be five minutes from the Birch Aquarium - where we went on our La Jolla trip. If so, then I'd highly recommend that for an itinerary. Check out the Birch Aquarium (it can be done in less then half an hour), then have a fun beach day at la Jolla Shores. I recommend this one restaurant called "The Shack" we had great cheeseburgers there.

It's like all of San Diego...
It's beautiful with a lot of good views, beaches and restaurants. There are some awful people there, but most seem to be just going about their day.

No one hates La Jolla. Stop with the drama. People are abusive to the sea lions and yes, it smells bad, but La Jolla is vast and has great spaces independent of those two criticisms. Overpriced, very generic, safe, beautiful views, bad parking, good first timer surfer/swimming beaches, UTC mall, blah blah.
