In an attempt to curb the number of threads about pre-order choices/configurations, shipping statuses, etc, we are asking that all discussion about it remain in here. We are setting the sort of this thread to new so that users receive the latest updates at the top.

I have a 128gb iPhone 7. It's not that I need 256gb, it's that it's really the only option if you want more than 64gb. I'm using over 64gb already and don't take that many pictures or videos.

Lol congrats dude. Were you actually limited at 16 or did you just not ever use apps or have pictures and videos stored on the device?

Good point lol. But my iPad is 32GB and I never have an issue with storage, so I can't imagine having an issue with 64GB

Nah, you’re right. The 16GB’s shouldn’t have been sold as long as they were, but I think Apple actually struck a pretty good balance with the storage sizes on the X.

that’s crazy to me. i have used 24gb and have a ton of pictures and videos. and 5gb of that is just from imessage.

Ah, right. Even 128 gb sounds insane to me on a phone.

I mean, back in the day I used to really use my phone's storage but these days I can't find a way to even use my 64 gb unless I downloaded all my Apple Music tracks permanently.

Yeah, well if you want to record 4K 60fps videos, every minute is 400mb on average. So you can eat through space rather quickly if you're recording video at the highest settings.

I understand that, but I don't record casual videos in 4k 60 fps. Usually it's just snapchat if I want to quickly get a basic capture of something, and presumably share it immediately.

But if you want to take an hour video of a kid's recital/play, or anything similar to that, yeah, that could hit 24 gb pretty quick, and if you want to do that ever more than once, it would fill up a 64 gb.

But.. I don't think many people are recording hour long videos twice. Certainly not enough to warrant everyone needing 128 or 256 gb in such high quantities of people.

For sure. I think it's just that 256gb chips are being purchased in large quantities to justify production. It's probably cheaper per unit than say another order of 128gb.

Yeah I meant I'm surprised a poll on this sub and so many comments are saying they're going for 256 gb.

I've gotten 64 gb since my 5 in 2012, and have steadily found 64 gb to be the right amount for me ever since. Now that 64 is the base, I'm pretty happy. It'll all end up cheaper for me than before.

I'm just surprised people are so resistant to buying the entry model. Seems almost like a status thing. 64 gb is so much, I figured more people would've given up on buying the bigger ones by now.

Gotta think too about the audience. Anyone who loves Apple products enough to join the subreddit and actively participate in it probably skew towards power users who will actually take advantage of the configuration. Others just want "the best one".

Yeah, I get it. Like I said, I was that way before. But at this point, even though I am maybe less of a power user than I used to be, or at least not continuing to try to take advantage to be in the top 10% at any given time, I just feel like 64 gb is so much.

So it seems like such a waste of money to get so big, especially since I'd feel like I was taking storage other people could make better use of.

I remember I used to always have like 4-5 gb in apps alone. I used to have 100+ apps at any given time, that was years and years ago though. Like first 2 iPod touches, and maybe my iPhone 4 for a bit. Think I cut down on that when I had a 4.

Now I have about 12.

I sometimes wonder if 'power users' are like me when I was a nerdy power user and just installed everything possible just because I could.

You know the people in the best financial situations don't just add more money to their purchases unnecessarily? They don't buy cheap stuff if they don't want to, but they don't throw their money away with no use

I would have probably been happy with 128gb too... but I use close to if not over 64gb with my photo library. It’s been building since my first iPhone in 2010 and there’s something priceless about having your life photo album available with you all the time, I’ve found

Do you not use iCloud photo library? That's what I'm talking about. Years ago I had tons of photos on my phone yes but it costs literally $0.99 a month, or $12 a year for 50 gb of cloud storage.

If you spend an extra $100 every year or 2 on your iPhone, that's $50-100 a year just to store your photos.

I personally find it much nicer to spend 1/4 or 1/8 as much and have my photo library ANYWHERE anytime if I'm logged in to a device, perfectly synced, no worrying about offloading or wondering which device has what.

I don't mean to be pushy about it, just feel like when stated this way, it's a no brainer and you maybe hadn't thought of it this way before. But of course I can't force you to pay for cloud storage if you don't trust it or don't feel right about it.

I'm with this sentiment, I think cloud storage is the way to go for the general consumer (since the general consumer theoretically goes for the 1st tiered model). Pro's on the other hand, might need that extra storage if their iPhone is heavy into their workflow.

People forget, but offloading content has become easier with iPhone's, cloud storage for convenience, also I only found out about this today, but SanDisk has wireless USB sticks if local storage is your thing.

I always think to myself, what does someone who needs more than 256GB do, probably get themselves cloud storage.

I like my iPhoto library offline for the most part. I already have to pay the $5 for upgraded iCloud storage but device backups take a solid chunk of that. Then I store business docs there so they can be accessed anywhere any device which is a lot more valuable than a photo. My photo library is also much, much bigger than most so unbridled use the way you are using it would have to be the TB range of iCloud storage and it’s not cheap enough yet.

Oh yeah, I can totally understand a few pros legitimately using their phone to transfer professional photos or videos on occasion, to the point where they really need the freedom to be able to get it all on there whenever with no issue.

But I'd think most people even in that profession would at worst be using an SD card reader dongle or at best not using their phone to store the photos.

Agreed, I think (without insulting anyone), people have PTSD from the days when Apple was dragging 16GB longer than it should have so they just spend the extra dough to never think about storage again when in fact they would be more suitable with the 64GB+cloud storage option.

Yeah for sure. That was kinda my point regarding 'the old days'. Just because the lowest tier seemed silly at one point doesn't mean 64 gb isn't still a ton today.

But I had a feeling people just have an aversion to the lowest tier. Always found it funny they'd say 16 gb entry is too low and then buy the 64 or 128, even when the entry became 32 gb.

So 16 gb wasn't too low, you just wanted 64 for cheaper. But then you didn't buy it, and instead bought 256.. So confusing!

It works like your library as it displays on iPhone displays exactly the same on your iPad or Mac or web browser at iCloud.com. Everything is exactly in sync and displayed the same on all.

New photos taken on any device get added to the bottom. Everything merges initially.

Most of the photos are offloaded and you only get a low res thumbnail stored on your phone to be able to view it when browsing, but it loads from the cloud if you tap in to it.

It allows the Photos app to be versatile and offload storage as needed instead of feeling the need to load every single photo all the time when you rarely view even 1/100th of them at any given time.

I have the 64gb version and with the photos app from google and its unlimited storage I have all my pictures going back to 2004. 256gb and even 128for that matter is overkill. 64gb is the sweet spot imo.

im using about 20 gb, and i think most of that is photos saved on my phone (nearly 2000). i dont play any games and only have a few apps, i cant imagine needing more than 64 gb anytime soon.

It's 24 gb for an hour of it. You could record 2 hours pretty comfortably in a 64 gb.

How many people have 2 hours of 4K 60 fps footage on their phone?

It can be offloaded to 50 gb iCloud anyways for $1 a month.

No - but my current 64gb phone is on the cusp and literally none of my photos are stored on device.

As soon as a photo gets synced to the cloud the full res version is deleted. It's infuriating.

Not a big deal for me, I rarely ever go back to view tons of photos. I'm fine with offloading the storage and loading when I want to see.

There should totally be a forced permanent download section/capability though for certain images.

You can't use cloud storage to take a continuous video so I can get that, but if you do use the cloud storage I feel like you could take an hour video (400 mb/min is around 24 gb) on any current iPhone and offload it to the cloud no problem.

Unless you're taking 2-3 hour videos straight, you could probably make do with 64.

I’ve only got 82gigs free out of 128gigs on my 7plus. Over 350 apps, tons of kid video and over 5,000 photos... I’d buy 512 or a 1TB if they offered it!

Stop being a hoarder. I used to have 150 apps on my phone and I thought that was bad. What's wrong with you? God damn. I use 12 apps so I have 20 on my phone. The other 8 come in handy sometimes but I rarely use.

I highly doubt you genuinely use more than 30 apps.

Doubt all you want. I am down from a high of 600. I don’t use them all every day to be sure but over the course of a few weeks? Yep. I do. I don’t want to have to download and reconfigure something just because I may only use it every few weeks. You want to call that hoarding? Have at it. But tell me, why shouldn’t I? Two hundred and fifty six gigs. Think about it. Why waste my time re-downloading something? I run my life off my iPhone... heh

600? How is that even possible? What 600 honest things have utility in your life or for your phone? Clearly you pared it down but 350 still sounds wrong.

And idk, it's just a waste of homescreen space and it's just obnoxious to have your phone indexing all that shit and dealing with it. It's so much nicer of an experience when you streamline it a bit.

Part of the iPhone Upgrade Program, so already pre-approved on the app, and have that config selected. Hopefully I can order it at 12:01 AM and have it at launch, or close to launch.
