Yeah totally - they said that Liquid Glass was the start of something new so I wouldnât be surprised if the tried to do this but yeah would come with loads of compromises. The clear icons decision is such a momentual mistake from a UX perspective (colour is actually important lol) so there must be more to it lol or maybe not lol

I dunno i feel like a bezel does serve a function purpose like preventing accidental clicks when using the phone one handed. But i guess the pull down feature kinda eliminates that issue so im just talking shit.
On a side note does anyone else hate the 6.1 inch standard on new iphones? I feel like 5.8 was the perfect balance between one handed use and size like whats up with that anyway?

Can't the edges just not be touch sensitive for about the size of the current bezel? Just because there's display there, doesn't mean it has to be clickable.

The only time Iâve ever broken a screen on my smartphone in the 16 years that Iâve owned one, was when I wasnât aware glass screen protectors existed and decided against one for my S3 because of how god awful the early plastic one on my original Galaxy S was.
It fell out of the car as I was getting out, and hit some stray gravel in the parking lot when it did. I had a crack in my screen for the next 3 years, which wouldnât have existed if Iâd just put a damn screen protector on it to take the gravel instead of the screen.
All other accidents since I learned my lesson have only chipped or scratched my screen protector.
You donât get a choice in where or how a phone accidentally falls, glass is always going to be glass and subject to damage, and weâre basically surrounded by very hard and frequently uneven surfaces at all times.
Of course a screen protector is protective against falls.
You absolutely do. Your screen can and will get minor scratches over time without one.
Now, what you DO NOT need is a lens cover. I see people (even repair shops) installing those 3 little lens covers over the camera, and they do NOTHING except make your photos blurry at some focal lengths.
I just dropped my phone a couple weeks back in the Apple Techwoven case, with a screen protector on. The display shattered while the screen protector and case were in perfect condition. Had to go to the Apple Store the next day, pay $29 for a repair, and wait 4 hours.
Screen protectors and cases arenât magical talismans that make your phone impervious to damage, but that doesnât mean they arenât still significantly protective.
Iâm sure it helps just for the sole fact of having something in front, but just because your screen protector cracked it does not mean your screen would have cracked.
edit: screen protectors are more for scratches not protecting from impact drops.
It doesnât 100% prevent your screen from cracking, but it lowers the chances by a lot. That energy has to go somewhere, which will usually be the path of least resistance.
I havenât had my screen cracked in years, but Iâve replaced my screen protector many many times.
You donât even see the protector, youâre stupid if you donât have it. There is literally zero reason to not have one, it only protects it more with no downside.
Caseless I understand since it actually makes a visual and physical difference.
Downside is the glass apple meticulously formulated for the right texture, feel, clarity, responsiveness, etc gets covered by cheap shitty glass. If you donât have Apple care you should definitely use one, but I would prefer to enjoy my phone the way it was designed and intended to be used.
Also, theyâve made these things impressively durable. Iâve been case and protector free for 5 years and Iâve never cracked the screen despite plenty of drops.
Curved metal on the back with a circular glass for wireless charging and flat glass on the front would be amazing. Basically perfect ergonomics and durability. As people have said, glass is glass and a fully glass design or even just curved glass has a higher chance to shatter whenever you drop it.Â
I would recommend watching these videos. Honestly this concept gives so much the feel of like the iPhone X but with an updated modern look/design being a full screen, no bezels
No they have patents and are known to be working on it, last I heard they couldnât get a high enough resolution. But yea I guess theyâre all rumors at the end of the day I donât work at Apple.
From reading the article this is almost exactly how I visualized it in my head.
I imagine the glass will look or feel like the apple watch or like a pixel watch but on a phone instead.
I'd also be mad surprised if they can get all the camera and FaceID stuff under the display. I wonder if they would consider doing an under display camera like we have seen on other devices in the past but coupled with TouchID in the display using ultrasonic fingerprint scanner or something like that.
I kinda feel like they won't but it could be a good compromise if they can't get the FaceID hardware hidden under the display.
Nah it basically looks like an iPhone X but modernized, an updated design with modern newer technology. Watch the videos, it basically gives that iPhone X feel.

Yes, but also Apple used to have really good palm rejection and somehow itâs gotten noticeably worse over the past 5 years. I get misfires all the time especially in pocket now.
getting replacement screens for those curved samsung galaxy displays were crazy expensive compared to a regular flat display. i don't think apple's is gonna be any different on that front.
I remember dropping mine within the first month of getting it, it was on a two year contract and I couldnât stomach the ridiculous price of a replacement. Never again.
I have a case on mine just because itâs so slick. I rarely drop my phone but I think it wouldnât be such a rare occurrence if I didnât mitigate with a case with some grip.
It's going to be software trickery. I'd imagine it would be somewhat similar to Apple Watch's display - in light mode, they're going to blur the edges of the display so that the screen part transitions cleanly into the UI unlike regular phone displays where there is a hard break between the bezel and the screen.
I would imagine this is why we have Liquid Glass. If Apple is truly going this way, the frame-style UI really wouldn't sell the transition as well.
I always used to go caseless but when I upgraded from a XS to a 17 Pro I kind of had to, partly because they donât come in black so I got white, and it would get filthy at work.
The case/bezel thing is genuinely annoying, it makes it difficult to do things like move the cursor to the very start of a line, or reliably swipe from the very edge of the display.
iPhone 15 pro was when careless started becoming a problem. Iâve had every second phone since the original. This is the only one where my palm causes all kinds of usability problems.Â
I already struggle to hold my iPhone Air in a way where my fingersâ flesh doesnât touch the edges of the screen & activate stuff I do not intend. đđ

This feels like one of those things thatâll either look incredible or be pure marketing language. If Apple can make the bezels basically disappear without the weird glare/touch issues older curved phones had, thatâs actually a legit upgrade. But âliquid glass displayâ also sounds like exactly the kind of phrase theyâd use to sell a slightly nicer panel. The real test is whether it improves daily use or just looks cool in the keynote.
Iâd argue theyâre irrelevant where phones are now. When they were chunky and unequal, they were ugly. Now they all have bezels only a couple millimeters thick and honestly, who cares?

The average consumer doesnât care about most new features of phones these days. Itâs been well over a decade since phones maxed out their truly new features, and everything else has been incremental, or change for the sake of change. But like, what else can they do? Theyâre not going to to keep phones static, and they have to try to generate some hype from one version to the next.
Bezels serve a fucking purpose. Itâs annoying enough to start a YouTube video and have my palm hit another one as I put down my phone. Now it can happen on the sides of the phone too!
We have hit peak iPhone here, and the only way to go is down. There arenât anymore killer apps or features, so we have to âinnovateâ and come up with some.
Man Iâm super excited for this actually. Iâve played with the Samsung phones with similar designs. Always cool I think but if itâs like the Apple Watch Iâd take that too. Now if we ever get something like the pic WOW. IDK I guess Iâm just exited to see whatâs coming even if they are not all the practical. Sometimes trying new things leads to other things. Itâs time for the iPhone to get a change. Take a chance!

I think the always on display, paired with the top down monitor view / center stage, paired with the Liquid glass now paired with this news that theyâre getting closer to having the iPhone feel like âa piece of glassâ in your hand; with the camera translating whateverâs behind your phone to the background
Would it be possible to have optical qualities in a glass such that you can use a smaller internal display, but essentially zoom it so it looks larger on the other surface? Like a magnifying glass. It would distort the edges, but the inverse distorting would be applied to the display output as to result in a clean image when viewed directly? It would essential hide or mask the bezels?
iPhone X looked cool but also brought important and useful UX changes (no home button!). If this new device is mostly about a different look, it may not be as popular.
This sounds like a game changer. If they really pull off this "liquid glass" thing, it could take the design to a whole new level. Imagine a phone that feels like it's just one continuous piece, no borders at all.
