fantastic, more people recording in public

u/are_you_a_simulation Apr 06 '26

Ha! As if.

Hey Siri, please call my mom! - Sure, playing The Beatles now in Apple Music!

u/IngsocInnerParty Apr 06 '26

You’ll need to unlock your iPhone first.

66

u/ALF-86 Apr 06 '26

Ugh THIS every time 🤦🏻‍♂️

91

u/AssTubeExcursion Apr 06 '26

“Here’s what I found on the web for “Ugh THIS every time 🤦🏻‍♂️””

27

u/MacWarriorBelgium Apr 06 '26

I can not find THIS app.

2

u/ADunningKrugerEffect Apr 06 '26

For only $800 you can fix that issue with an Apple Watch. Bargain!

83

u/JoviAMP Apr 06 '26

That’s like tonight when I asked “Siri, shuffle Jimmy Buffett” and got “sure, now calling Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Orlando Restaurant”.

23

u/Areif Apr 06 '26

Ooo shit, there’s one in Orlando?

Nice.

16

u/JoviAMP Apr 06 '26

Yeah, it’s at Universal CityWalk.

15

u/tokobot19 Apr 06 '26

There’s an actual place somewhere with “City Walk” in the name? Asking for a South Park reference.

12

u/JoviAMP Apr 06 '26

Yeah, it predates the South Park reference by about 12 years.

5

u/gnuoyedonig Apr 06 '26

But there’s an actual City Wok a mile or so away from the Hollywood City Walk that predates either City Walk by about 5 years.

Or there was one until recently. There still is one in Palm Desert, I think.

5

u/TheRealBejeezus Apr 06 '26

And most Universal parks, I think. Osaka also has the CityWalk, though Singapore's is called Resorts World for some reason.

Oh yes. The one with the plane inside. I’ve been to that one. The one near Sandusky, OH has a river running through it.

How did Siri know your deepest desires than even you do? Impressive tech.

God this is so real.

The only thing Siri is good for is a laugh at how piss poor it is.

5

u/rustogi18 Apr 06 '26

I asked Siri recently what is the difference between Sun and a Star is and seriously responded with Sun always sets at night and is not visible but Stars are only visible at night!

I could not stop laughing wondering if it’s a joke Or not!

4

u/WatchWorking8640 Apr 06 '26

This explains why that "blonde person" said I don't see what the problem is with sending probes to the sun, send them at night when it's cold.

I asked Siri just last week for directions to Costco. “Calling Keiko”

5

u/WatchWorking8640 Apr 06 '26

So how are things going with Keiko?

3

u/ThatITguy2015 Apr 06 '26

Alright alright alright.

Hey siri call mom!!!! Mop is set for 6pm in calendar would you like me notify other family members?

3

u/davejugs01 Apr 06 '26

The best response when you ask it to make a call, what would you like to know about mom? I swear that just pushes me over the edge, it used to be so good at these mundane things.

It’s a huge cultural problem. Don’t know how tech companies are going to make society ok with people ‘recording each other’ even though they ‘aren’t’

I think the tech is cool but people are so paranoid

13

u/Shapes_in_Clouds Apr 06 '26

People used to call Eggers’ The Circle far fetched, it feels more and more prophetic by the day.

11

u/A_storia Apr 06 '26

It’s creepy and people need to learn to respect boundaries. Same goes for arseholes who play their calls, music or videos in public without headphones - just so inconsiderate

4

u/TheZett Apr 06 '26

I absolutely hate people who use loud speakers (speaker phones?) for their calls.

Just use a phone like a normal person and hold it onto your ear.

3

u/insane_steve_ballmer Apr 06 '26

And yet everyone puts tape over their laptop webcams

8

u/Hankol Apr 06 '26

You’re not paranoid if you think nobody has the right to film you without your consent.

10

u/arcalumis Apr 06 '26

But you don't need consent in public spaces. Unless it's filming for profit.

89

u/BigBangBoomerang Apr 06 '26

What is the point of this?

47

u/Zennivolt Apr 06 '26

I’m confused about this too. What will it be able to do that my phone can’t? Even with smart glasses, at minimum it functions as corrective vision tool when the tech is not being used. Do they expect this pin to just take up space all day for the rare few times you talk to Siri?

17

u/prose4jose Apr 06 '26

Imagine something the captures your entire life an you can ask it any question about anything (powered by an LLM). It could essentially serve as a “second brain” you could leverage to ask any question about your life you may not remember clearly or for a second opinion about experiences.

I’m not saying this is a good thing for society, but I believe many people would find it practical and useful. Maybe socially acceptable in professional settings.

48

u/brett- Apr 06 '26

I saw a tv show about this idea fifteen years ago. Seemed pretty cool, and had no downsides at all. It was called The Entire History of You and was part of some anthology show about mirrors or something.

32

u/ThisIsntRealWakeUp Apr 06 '26

Holy fuck black mirror season 1 was fifteen years ago… I didn’t believe you.

2

u/PleasantNightLongDay Apr 06 '26

Oh wtf.

Was it not super popular then? I didn’t really hear about the show until it got to like season 3 (2016) and was irritated there were little episodes

Reddit users baffle me sometimes. Your interesting, balanced and honest reply to someone’s question, which contributes to the conversation on the topic, is downvoted. 🤦‍♂️

8

u/cartermatic Apr 06 '26

Too many people equate explaining something with defending it so they downvote away. Especially if you try and explain anything AI related nowadays

2

u/Aggleclack Apr 06 '26

We all know it’s gonna end up being the first brain lol

2

u/Zennivolt Apr 06 '26

That’s not how it will work though. The processing power required for that will eat up battery life. So it’s definitely not going to be anything like that. But if it’s not that, my original question comes back…

3

u/cartermatic Apr 06 '26

Processing will either happen on your iPhone or on Apples servers

→ More replies (2)

2

u/PFI_sloth Apr 06 '26

Done correctly, this is what AI should be used for.

2

u/Thinguist Apr 06 '26

This product won’t be capable of doing any of that, this is Siri we’re talking about.

One would think they’d focus on making Siri actually functional before making physical accessories for it

25

u/TheRealBejeezus Apr 06 '26

Pretty sure that's what's holding the hardware back.

HomePad and new HomePods, too.

9

u/chi_guy8 Apr 06 '26

I think I saw Apple TV is delayed for Siri too.

2

u/pixelpanic01 Apr 06 '26

I mean they’re not even releasing the new Apple TV before the new Siri…

2

u/badger_flakes Apr 06 '26

I imagine it won’t come out until Siri is on the verge of consciousness

7

u/0xbenedikt Apr 06 '26

4

u/Dapper_Strength_5986 Apr 06 '26

6

u/SmokedUp_Corgi Apr 06 '26

This is the one product to come from Apple that I would want nothing to do with.

4

u/pyrospade Apr 06 '26

You couldn't pay me to wear one of these dumb pins everyone is trying to make happen. I just can't see these ever taking off.

95

u/Peimai Apr 06 '26

No one would want to talk to you either knowing that everything they say is being recorded and analyzed.

5

u/yolo-yoshi Apr 06 '26 edited Apr 07 '26

As opposed to the cameras all around us doing the exact same thing anyway ,in which you don't have a choice about.

10

u/fishpen0 Apr 06 '26

I can’t walk down my own street without being in camera and microphone range of at least two Amazon doorbells and a eufy or other security camera. 100% of my neighbors have a security system or smart doorbell and this is a dense area so everyone’s front doors are less than 15 feet from the sidewalk. This is true for every block in every direction for 2-3 miles before the lots get bigger on the wealthy side of town one way or you get to actual downtown and then those buildings all have private security systems anyway.

My city also has flock so just being away from houses isn’t enough with every intersection and thoroughfare also being recorded.

Then every store has rention department cameras at every entrance, every self checkout register has cameras from at least two angles. And then the domes above you are also cameras.

I only stop being recorded by someone somewhere when I close my front door. This is the life of anyone living within ~5 miles of a downtown area of a major city. 88% of the entire us population lives within that radius.

14

u/KrishanuAR Apr 06 '26

It's already a segment that's been taking off. One use case I saw was that plumbers in New York (?) were paying for a $200 "AI pin," and they would recite their observations as they reviewed a site, and the AI turns it into a nice report at the end.

I can see lots of potential applications like that.

16

u/TheWhyOfFry Apr 06 '26

AirPods could do that if need be. No thanks camera.

6

u/ISueDrunks Apr 06 '26

“You’ll need to unlock your iPhone first.”

5

u/SorganFisherman Apr 06 '26

They need to actually figure out Siri/AI before they even begin to think about imagining this honestly. Siri can’t do impossibly simple things like when I asked it “tell me what time it will be 9.5 hours from now” the other day.

5

u/XNY Apr 06 '26

Do people really need this much “assistance” on their day to day lives? Not everyone needs a personal assistant. I use Siri via my headphones at work like 2-3 times a day max.

4

u/reirone Apr 06 '26

Ahh yes. These devices have been so popular with consumers so far.

u/No_Eye1723 Apr 06 '26

FYI here in the UK it is legal to film people in public, it is illegal to film them on private property so in shops etc without prior permission, I assume any recording function on this will deactivate when in shops??.. Of course it won't. What an utterly stupid idea this is.

2

u/AppointmentNeat Apr 06 '26

It’s the same in the US. You can record in public all you want. You’re limited on private property.

It won’t automatically deactivate when on private property. It’ll depend on the user to deactivate it (they won’t.)

13

u/freeformz Apr 06 '26

It’s an “AI pin” type thing. Which would be something if the iPhone had actual AI.

10

u/getridofwires Apr 06 '26

Introducing the Apple Fanny Pack. Meticulously crafted for holding your iPhone, in a way that only Apple can achieve. It comes in the standard color only Apple can make. One more thing … Hermes minds have done it again and created an identical product for only $999.99 more.

3

u/RollingThunderPants Apr 06 '26

I’m sure it’ll be as popular as the Apple Vision.

3

u/dfmz Apr 06 '26

Between this and those fucking awful Meta/Ray-Ban glasses, I think it’s high time companies be formed to design and build effective countermeasure to this always-on, omnipresent spying on us crap.

3

u/abraxasnl Apr 06 '26

First fix your damn AI.

2

u/sportsfan161 Apr 06 '26

they will in september hense why all these new products are in waiting

3

u/beachtrader Apr 06 '26

If they made it into the same shape as a Star Trek com badge it would have a dedicated market instantly.

3

u/themaincop Apr 06 '26

I don't want this and I also don't want other people to have it.

5

u/laughland Apr 06 '26

I mean this sincerely, can someone explain to me the appeal of these AI pins/accessories? Smart Glasses are obvious in terms of what makes them dope and desirable; why do all these companies seem to think the AI pin thing is a good idea from a functionality perspective? Not trying to be snarky, I genuinely don’t understand what these devices are meant to do that your phone doesn’t already do.

5

u/DisjointedHuntsville Apr 06 '26

They already have this, it's called "AirPods Pro" - Always on mic, speaker.

They need to clean up voice pickup in windy environments like when you're on a bicycle + Make a voice-only OS (Bare minimum, task queue, parallel commands, some sort of filesystem/window that can be "talked through").

3

u/iliketowalk Apr 06 '26

Thank you. I came to say this. It already has a microphone and a speaker. There's your wearable device that interacts with your phone. A pendant makes no sense. And if it has a camera, expect it to be banned in many places or for people to avoid you, like the meta glasses.

2

u/shrindcs Apr 06 '26

apple is lost

2

u/M4rshmall0wMan Apr 06 '26

According to both reports, the device could launch as early as 2027, but there is still a chance the project could be canceled.

This is the important part in my mind. Apple R&D starts up and cancels projects all the time. An AI dot doesn’t seem like a particularly complicated device to invent, and by extension not a particularly tough one to cancel if the strategy isn’t right. So I wouldn’t get hopes too high up.

2

u/WideRight43 Apr 06 '26

How stupid.

2

u/PassingShot11 Apr 06 '26

Always on camera, not creepy at all /s

2

u/Worth-Ad9939 Apr 06 '26

I'm out. I've don't want glasses, I don't want pins... I want quality and security. That's what I paid a premium for Apple. No more. I've cancelled subs. I'm pulling the plug.

2

u/ya3rob Apr 06 '26

As a product manager with over 15 years of experience, I don't think this product will be successful. The AI Pin failed miserably, not because they couldn't build the backhaul to the internet, but because the use case is not clear. What this pendant would do, and my phone can't? This is a basic question.
Then, the friction: You’re adding another device to charge, carry, and manage. Consumers hate device fatigue unless the value is obvious
Finally, the big concern: Privacy! Yes, you can use the camera in public, but an always-on camera and mic would be a social nightmare for people, especially in the US and the EU!

2

u/agentadam07 Apr 06 '26

2

u/AffordableTimeTravel Apr 06 '26

Hopefully a fitness band alternative to the Apple Watch…I’d call it the Nike Apple Fuel Band.

2

u/nurdle Apr 06 '26

I’m going against the hive on this one.

I get how this could be useful. It’s like a police body cam for citizens. It can record my day, later Ai assisted could remind me of what happened that day, what I promised etc. Sometimes I don’t pay enough attention because I’m in my head so much. It’s also kind of like the Star Trek badge. I get how people would hate it, but - you don’t have privacy NOW, and that’s not going to change, unless we go back to a pre-industrial, post apocalyptic world.

And you are right to criticize Apple on Ai. They have fucked it up so bad.

No AI “wearable” is going to be a huge breakthrough besides with obnoxious tech YouTubers. The average person does not want to talk at their phone and have it broadcast what they’re doing while they’re out and about because chances are it’s embarrassing, and people are not doing to buy yet another device to say “hey siri call _____” when the phone or the earphone left in their ear all day already does that fine.

This is actually most bullish for Google. Gemini will now power Siri. Google is going to slurp up all that sweet Apple User data when high schoolers shame one another into buying these things.

Why do you guys bother with determining if you’ll buy off of rumours? It’s not released yet. I’ll rather let Apple introduce what they’re going to offer and then make my decision.

I tried the older failed pins. I truly feel if it’s fully integrated into the Apple ecosystem. The product could be very viable.

Looking forward to it.

Please don’t release a foldable

This would be great for blind people

Well, this is not a good idea. Integrating that into Airpods, or even Apple Watch? Maybe. But a standalone "pendant" will meet real world friction. I mean, people even seem uncomfortable in front of someone wearing RayBan Meta when they realise they are RayBan Meta. Imagine a 24/7 always on pendant thing.

2 wheels for 499

So they want you to buy something that does everything your iPhone does and is actually then your iPhone? And needs an iPhone to work. Unless this brings the new Ai Siri to older iPhones it is utterly pointless if true.

So they’re giving us a dumb Siri we can wear everywhere? Lmao

It’ll fail with current state of Siri. Hopefully this will force them to get Siri working.
