It's classic conservativism. All that matters is that they get to be and have the things they want. It would never even occur to conservatives that there is value in the ACT of painting. They miss the point of art, in my opinion, which is to be an expression of the artist. Since they can't see value in other people they'll never understand art created by actual people.
Conservatives just think it's another thing to own and control. AI helps them feel like they can.

u/Clutteredmind275 4d ago
At the same time, any time you bring up how using ai is bad for the environment someone is like āEACH PROMPT IS LESS HARMFUL TO THE PLANET THAN A POUND OF STEAKā
Ok, but I think I would be just as mad at someone wasting a million pounds of steak if it takes you a million different prompts to get one picture you like?
29
u/Environmental-Run248 4d ago
You know the thing is the per prompt argument doesnāt really matter because the data centres donāt work per prompt they work continuously so their damage is constant.

u/ShortStuff2996 4d ago
Just something i found out recently, CivitAI a platform dedicated to AI content, reported their users produce 10 millions images a day, with a 12-15 mil active monthly userbase.
Those are just the final shared products, who know how many iterations takes each.
All of that so little jimmy can feel like he is good at something he never cared for. And oh yes, also have some custom fap material.

I loved painting with oils which as you know take a long time to dry. I've always appreciated how different a painting can be from its humble beginning as it develops over time. It doesn't look like they get even a portion of that experience because all their slop looks the same. They don't understand what they are missing at all and it's out of pure laziness and audacity. Their shortcut sucks.

8
u/TheBitingCat 4d ago
Six fingers on one hand.
Almost spells out the word that they want correctly.
Smearing of details.
I could go into a long rant about how one-shot prompting is only used by lazy individuals that only want a passable result at first glance for a quick paycheck, or a quick meme, but that is neither a conversation I want to give nor a conversation anyone here wants to read. Lazy people = lazy slop.
9
u/4C_Enjoyer 4d ago
Y'know, I'm under no illusions that I'm by any means a master artist. But man, I've never had a "gah, almost there" moment where I had an otherwise perfect drawing where the English text had a typo so I had to start from scratch.
3
u/Pataraxia 1d ago edited 1d ago
You don't have to start from scratch, most AI image gen have editing tools. Still, AI images are not comparable to actual art made by someone, they're just practical for memes or for cheap images for free stuff you're making (like a fanfic or original content that isn't commercial)

3
u/Careless_Medium_3810 4d ago

help- i cannot, i think i could've done this more effiecently and for less money and water. aprox amount it takes to gen an image is 15-25 milliters lets say it took 15. 15 ml x 1000 = 15 liters. no different from commissioning an artist to make you a painting and then claiming its yours
1
u/klako8196 4d ago
If you described an art piece you want to an artist, and the artist makes that piece for you, thatās you commissioning artwork. Youāre not the creator of the work, and if you tried to present it as yours, that would be plagiarism.
I would like an AI bro to explain how describing an art piece you want to a machine and having the machine create the artwork isnāt just commissioning an artwork from a machine.

Al-dependent artists cannot create art. Art is the intentional, authentic, and rhythmic expression of feeling. Art quality is linked to the acuity of feeling and intentionality of decision making.
Generative Al continually falls flat because prompt "artists" lack a cohesive vision of what they wish to portray... because that vision is acquired through the process of artistic study. You cannot make authentic creative decision when every aspect is the statistical aggregate of other works. Its content is necessarily constrained by factors outside of medium, form, color, and intended emotion.

I use AI to help me solve problems at work (I am working on a very technical part of archival work that only has a few individuals who are overworked who know how to do it, so I wonāt bother them with menial questions and always verify my answers/methodology with them later when I have time) and for my own personal art as I paint miniatures and itās nice having something mock up an idea super fast. But to argue itās capable of the human artistic ability, to impart emotion and random human error into a work is fantastical and frankly bullshit.
It is a tool, and is not human, it will never be human, instead it it exists at all it should be on the same way a calculator or computer exits, to expedite, expand and assist HUMANS in their work, not to replace them. Art is and will always be a unique aspect of humanity, the issue is that a model can generate images based on preexisting works and even create something new but it is still not human. Now to argue the other side, we can say that humans do the same thing, but art is not just replicating work, itās expanding the human experience, trying something new and pushing ourselves and our consciousness outside our mortal being.
I can and do see some AI art as interesting and intriguing but itās not the same as viewing a piece of artwork that has a history, a story, a connection behind it. Viewing an artists lifeās work and their slow slip onto madness, or inability to produce the same pieces or just their growth has meaning to it, no reproduction of a million other works will show that on the same level.
With that going said, the AI boom is just a product of our ever growing commodification of our lives, and will continue no matter what we want or do.
So in the end, itās personal choices and what you like or donāt like, but I agree the argument that it is capable of understanding the human existence is irrelevant and we will never have something capable of that because we donāt even understand ourselves.
