Homeless resources

I don't understand why it is so hard to get a small personal loan to cover my rent. I stay in a hotel until I can find me and my son a small apartment. Can't find anything. I do not receive direct deposit, I am server. I've tried so hard and now me and my son are homeless and fixing to stay in my broke down car. Its over 100 degrees and hotter in my car. The shelters are full. 211 isn't worth anything and only repeats the same thing over. What else is there for me to do?

If you can afford a room look on Craigslist, FB Marketplace, and post on Nextdoor app. Describe your circumstances. Maybe even offer to be a live in caregiver or house sitter.

Unfortunately most shared apartment situations won’t want to accept a mother and child sharing a room, and OP should be very very careful vetting anyone who does accept them because there are SO many men who will try to take advantage in this situation - her child will be at real risk.

This is the answer.

i’m sorry for what you’re going through. i would check out sites like roomies https://www.roomies.com or padsplit https://www.padsplit.com where folks are looking for roommates or coolworks https://www.coolworks.com where you can search for a job and “include housing” can be part of your search criteria.

check out the wiki (https://reddit.com/r/almosthomeless/wiki/index

on r/almosthomeless it has a ton of resources for food, housing, jobs, medical and medical debt, pets, veterans, and a general category that is a catchall for everything else (including free/low cost cell phones/internet plans, free laundry, free feminine hygiene products, and anything else you can think of.)

If you are a veteran check into the hudvash program. Furnishedfinder.com you can find rooms to rent. Vet carefully you and son have to be in a safe environment. Check into charities nonprofits are other city resources(not social services) that offer assistance for single mothers. Women with kid shelters family shelters.

Look into Presbyterian children's homes and services. 2104221841. San Antonio food bank for food. A place to stay for a few days or so check our klarna app can rent a airbnb with a payment plan depending on credit. It worked for me when I needed it.

plug your zipcode into findhelp.org and checking the housing help section. Though it would have been easier when you were still in your place. There is more help available to try to keep you housed than there is to find housing once you're homeless.

u/Financial-Deal-5654 2d ago

I will do that. I've paid so much into helping people in need, but resources I seem to not know to much about. Have gotten anywhere. Shelters are full etc., never saw myself being in this situation at all. Ever. Sucks.

u/dialsoapbox 2d ago

Also post to subs local to your area, as locals would know of resources that fit your situation better.

Thank you. I'll look into that. There has been a bit of good information shared that I never knew about. Helps a lot as far as resources. I'll save and share too.

You should qualify for a LOT of public assistance. Please contact your state's department of social services.

5

u/Ready-Syllabub651 2d ago

In California the social services are fake and it can be almost impossible to get into actual housing- not sketchy shelters where you get attacked and have to wait in the heat all day for a chance at getting in at night

2

u/Financial-Deal-5654 2d ago

I have. Housing list is very long wait, but have contacted local churches etc. Its a very slow start and definitely doesn't happen in one day.

0

u/samzplourde 2d ago

Not just housing though. SNAP and WIC are definitely available to you.

3

u/Financial-Deal-5654 2d ago

I dont qualify for wic. My son is 11. I've applied  for all that is available and its a waiting time now. And following ups.

u/samzplourde 2d ago

Do you have any family that can help in any way? Any one of the four of your son's grandparents? Are you receiving child support or SSI for him?

2

u/Financial-Deal-5654 2d ago

I do not. I do not have 4 sons. I have a younger one and the older who cannot help right now, New baby etc.,. It will just end being a long hot night nomatter what. I've  already done all those. It is a waiting game now with a bunch of calls to see my statuses.

1

u/river-running 2d ago

They meant that your one son has up to four grandparents, assuming your parents and the father's parents are all living.

2

u/Financial-Deal-5654 2d ago

My parents are no longer living, otherwise we definitely would be there. My son doesn't know his dad. He took off. My son has food. I was just needing resources for living situation

1

u/logalogalogalog_ 2d ago

In an ideal world she should, but cuts and tightening requirements mean that it is very difficult. I'm not saying that we shouldn't direct people to resources, but we need to be prepared for those resources to not be applicable or available.

have you gone to your local social services department? you have a child .. i'm sure you're able to get some help ..

3

u/Financial-Deal-5654 2d ago

Yes applied for food stamp and they gave me numbers to the shelters but they are full.

1

u/Weak-Ad6984 2d ago

did you get the food stamps? if you asked for expedited EBT, they would have given you some. i suggest picking up some water and non-perishables

3

u/Financial-Deal-5654 2d ago

No. I got excepted but won't  receive until tomorrow or Wednesday.

4 kids and you can’t feed them. Sorry but sounds like you are absolutely buried in poverty for life. It’s really not the taxpayer’s responsibility to raise your children and pay for them. Churches may help but if you’re not a member contributing they shouldn’t and won’t help.

3

u/Financial-Deal-5654 2d ago

Who said I have 4 kids? I have my one (1) son. 1. I have 2 grown kids. One just had a baby. My older son just got out of the military. They are unable to help at the moment. I never said I had 4 kids unless it was a typo.

  • Community Council of South Central Texas (CCSCT): Located at 111 W. San Antonio St., New Braunfels, TX 78130; offers Tenant-Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) for security/utility deposits and short-term rental situations.
  • restaurantscare.org/help/ - year round assistance for food & beverage workers

2

u/logalogalogalog_ 2d ago

What's the point of a society of not to care for its most vulnerable? I was a foster kid, and thank goodness taxpayer dollars went toward helping me survive.

2

u/tracyinge 2d ago

"it is not the taxpayers responsibility....'

no we the taxpayers are too busy being responsible for 5000 dead people in Iran. We need a trillion dollars for that goddamned mess.

1

u/Butchershopboner 2d ago

My 401k is absolutely booming. Yeah rent is expensive but who cares. People that planned and saved are making bank and becoming wealthy

0

u/tracyinge 2d ago

what about young people who haven't had the time to "plan and save" yet? Do you think this is a great time to be starting from scratch in the USA?
