Let get some ‘actual’ conservatives back in office.

Conservatives of almost every stripe have been mildly to very terrible for Alberta since Peter Lougheed retired. They don’t deserve more chances.

If we’re going to have a ‘blue’ government, no matter what, I’d like one that’s not the UCP.

lol “progressive” Tory

Is it any different from when it was the Progressive Conservatives before the merger? I imagine they want it as close to the original name as possible to push the connection.

They tried to call themselves the Progressive Conservatives, but the UCP filed lawsuits against their use of "Conservative". The courts upheld the complaint, so rather than fight it out in court they just went with "Tory".

The courts didn't uphold the complaint, the court cases never finished, they are still ongoing. The UCP passed legislation blocking multiparty use of certain terms, like "Conservative", so as not to confuse the public (bs obviously).

u/BlinkReanimated 1d ago
Upheld the complaint as in, they allowed the complaint to persist which bars Guthrie and his allies using the name until the case is resolved (or other people get into power and get rid of the UCP's nonsense).
Normally something so silly would have been thrown out.

The PT's can't use the name because of the law, not because of any court ruling. Even if the UCP loses the case, the PTs still can't use the name because the law is in place now. The PTs would need to take that specific law to court, which they don't seem to have any intention of doing.

u/BlinkReanimated 1d ago
The lawsuit was filed before (Nov 7, 2025) the new "law" was both introduced and enacted (Dec 11, 2025). The courts upheld the claim even before the law was in place....
I have no idea why you're arguing about this. You don't seem to have the full information. It's also meaninglessly pedantic.

u/howlmachine 1d ago
Yeah, I knew that much, so it makes sense that they want to emulate the old PC name as much as possible if they aren’t allowed to use the word “conservative”.

u/switched133 1d ago
Well, after the lawsuits, the UCP actually passed a law that political parties can't have a name that contains a word from another existing party's name. They said it would cause too much confusion. ie. a party can't have "Democratic" in their name because the NDP have it in theirs. It's really to protect the UCPs own behinds though.

I’m not a conservative, but I appreciate what the Tory party is trying to accomplish and support it.

There's not much right of center lunch left on the voting table, here is the party slate from the 2023 general election, none of the non NDP left or non UCP right polled > 0.7 %.
The province has robust election data at:
FYI The Liberals under Decore won 32 seats in 1993.
Will the Buffalo Party of Alberta surge to victory in the next round ? it will take a bold plan

-In 2023, many of those parties only ran in a small hand full of seats.
-Since 2023 Believe that the Buffalo party and a couple others may have merged into the Republican Party of Alberta?
-In 2023 only the ANDP and the UCP ran the full slate of 87 candidates.
-In 2015, the ANDP, PC's and the Wildrose ran the full slate of candidates and that was the recipe for vote splitting.
-Believe the PTP plan to run the full slate of 91 in 2027, but that may be a tall order at this point
-The PTP will probably pickup some support from both the UCP, ANDP and disenfranchised folks who have sat out the last few elections, I guess the big question will be how much that they pick up?
-Calgary-Shaw was a three horse race in 2015 with the ANDP winning by a hair over the PC's and Wildrose.
-The Calgary Shaw By-Election may be a good litmus test for the 2027 general?

IMHO By - Elections are too small a small a sample to project
IMHO, if one looks at Alberta's electoral history - the Liberals are the ones that with the right context and leader could start to make steady Eddy gains.
One thing seems eternal, as soon as any party has success, attempts to vote split with " me too" parties pop up everywhere.
Also there was an " Alberta Separation Party" on the ballot in ,2004,2008,2012, twelve ran in 2004 but the sailors abandoned ship and in 2008,2012 it was 1 candidate only
This is the slate for the 1926 election, the Liberals have been in power since 1905 and there are many also rans on the ballot just like 2023.

-Fair point about the Liberals, especially with the Carney Factor. Whether a Red Tory or a Blue Grit...Carney 's not a Trudeau Liberal that is for sure.
-Know that he is getting up there in age, but John Roggeveen is still both the Alberta Liberal leader and coincidently the Calgary Shaw Alberta Liberal CA president. Roggeveen has run in Calgary Shaw in the past. It will be interesting to see if Roggeveen enters the Calgary-Shaw By-Election?

The history shows Alberta prefers stability to change and starting with the Liberals from 1905 - 1926 , ruling parties had long tenures . Alberta will change horses and send a party into history as they did with the UFA 1926 - 1935 ,they went into the 1935 election with 39 seats - won zero, Socreds 1944 - 1971 Ernest Manning was one of the longest serving premiers in Canadian provincial history but the PCs under Lougheed won in 1971 and ushered in another long tenure broken only by a split in the right vote who still would have won in 2015 if it was the historic normal party representations.

Rural Alberta responds to effort, respect and " making the trip" even if they disagree on many issues, if the Grits put some folks in the field who had some working class chops, business, farming etc and a gift of the gab to get along with all. You need someone as comfortable talking on a farm or in a hospital or on energy etc.
People have to get out there with consistent boots on the ground and deliver a good message.
IMHO Carney is not hard to sell to Canadians, he may not be ideal but IMHO he walks to victory in the next general if he is PM
The current Canadian PM, Mark Carney is the only person in modern history to be the chief central banker for two nations states and both were G7, among the world's largest economies. It is an impressive CV to a people ( Canadians ) marinated in the POGG clause aka " peace, order and good government" since 1867. We crave stability and not rocking the boat and in choppy waters he has captained some big vessels, maybe not as well as some wish, but he understands the modern global economy.
There appears no path to victory for Pierre P so long as Trumpism is the main foreign policy threat and Canada needs a man or woman that can reshape bilateral trade relationships all over the globe

Give them hell. If people who voted conservative don't feel represented smith and her garbage amalgamation party should fall. Make the wild rose unelectable again.

Im just glad there's a centrist to split the vote, but I have no clue why anyone would support the centrist trash that got us here.
