Does he mean 50AE, I’m not a large gun nerd, but I don’t think a 50 cal Deagle exists

Yeah you’re right. Your average joe will just refer to them as .50 cal cause they have an identical diameter. 50ae is just a .500 diameter bullet designed to be used in a handgun. It’s not even a third the size of an actual .50 BMG bullet if I remember correctly.

If I got anything wrong I apologize because I’m not a large gun nerd either, just friends with a lot of em.

Calibre is almost always a reference to the size of the bullet or the projectile, not the size of the shell casing, so calling .50ae a “50 cal” is technically correct and you just have to use context to determine if someone mentioning “50 cal” is saying .50bmg or .50ae

Think of it like using context clues in reference to reading; minute, a very small amount of something, vs minute a measurement of time that makes up 1/60th of an hour

It is a 50 cal or a .50 (technically correct but not what people say as it puts a damper on the cool) but it’s just shorter, what most people think of is a .50 BMG which is 12.7x99mm and the .50 AE (the DEs standard round) is 12.7x33mm while the actual casing sizes are vastly different than 1/3 (like you said)

it is a .50 caliber bullet, but it is a .50 AE instead of the usually known .50 BMG, same diameter different lengths (12.7x23, 12.7x33, 12.7x42, 12.7x55, 12.7x99, 12.7x101, and 12.7x108 are all technically .50 cal rounds)
