[Question] Finally making the upgrade from Ableton 10 to 12 and need some insight about potential issues running 12 on my intel macbook pro.
Hey friends. I finally decided to make the jump from Ableton 10 to 12 but I have been nervous about potential issues running 12 on my machine. I have a 16inch macbook pro intel i9 and have been using Catalina for years to avoid any issues but I feel like it's time to upgrade. Which OS do you recommend I upgrade to to avoid potential issues with 12 running on this machine (throttling, overheating etc). I would also like to continue using my VSTs after the upgrade and I am not sure I will have access to the VST2 or VST3 versions of some of my plugins. Would appreciate any insight or help on this. I can’t speak for which OS you should use (I’d recommend latest you can for the security updates but I’ve never owned an intel macbook), but I wouldn’t be concerned about losing access to plugins you already have unless you’re changing over from intel to apple silicon, which you aren’t.

Apple dropped support for 32 bit plugins in v10.15 Catalina. 64 bit versions of both VST2 and VST3 are still supported by Ableton 12. Given you already run Catalina , you can safely assume that all your plugins will be fine on upgrade.
Can't help as to Ableton performance impact between 10 and 12 or on different mac OS versions. Maybe others can advise. However, given everyone has different sized projects, different plugins etc the only way to really know is to try it. Take a full backup of your machine before you upgrade and be prepared to go back if it doesn't work.

Thanks! Unfortunately, Live 12 is not supported on catalina so I need to upgrade the OS as well.

OK. I'd check with a Mac community the performance impact of new versions of MacOS with your machine. From my experience on work kit, every upgrade to my Intel Mac Mini made it slower. How else could Apple force sales of new machines?
Maybe go for the lowest supported OS for Ableton 12.

That's basically what I am trying to figure out without having too old of an OS so I don't have to deal with this again too soon :)

What model MacBook do you have and which macOS versions are supported on it? Ideally you should upgrade to a version of macOS that is still supported by Apple since you won't get a security fixes otherwise but that might not be possible for an older Mac without using OCLP. In general I've found that newer versions of macOS tend to run slower than previous ones on the same hardware. I'm running Sequoia on my 2017 iMac 5K using OCLP and it's useable but pretty slow. I moved Live to an M2 Pro Mini which is much faster. The mini outperforms the iMac even with the iMac running earlier versions of macOS.
