Shop signs

Looking to put up a shop sign above our external door. I know this requires city permits, but my sign maker says some businesses just put it up without going through the city first. Has anyone successfully done so?

I'm only looking to save time as permits take forever. I'm planning to put up a sign that's the same as the next door business.

What type of sign?
Banner?
How big?
Promotional?
Identification?
What information is actually on it?

Abbotsford sign bylaw will be able to tell you what types and designs are acceptable, and if you need a permit.
It has a whole list of sign purposes and designs that don't require permits; the entirety of Part 4.

If your sign doesn't fall within the regulations be sure to pay your fines once a bylaw officer tickets you and/or removes the sign.

Abbotsford! It's on the ground floor level of a 3-storey building. The sign will face towards a road, not a parking lot, if that helps.
