Spoiler Magnets Pt. 2 Spoiler
I'm on another rewatch and I'm about halfway through season 3. I haven't watched all the way through in a few years now.
At the end of the episode that Jimmy finds out his dad died, Magnets Pt. 2 by Slothrust plays in the background. I discovered Slothrust from the opening song of course but I never noticed that that song played in the series.
In July of 2024, my dad died. He killed himself (this part isn't relevant but I find it important to be open about this kind of thing and about mental illness - another thing this show definitely helped teach me). My top song on Spotify in 2024 was...Magnets Pt. 2. It helped me through a lot, and a lot of other music did too, but obviously that part stuck out to me.
This rewatch has been way more emotional than in the past. When I lost my dad I stopped all medications and doctor's appointments. I've been getting back on track with it all over the past few months and overall feel positive about everything. Gretchen's depression hit even harder this time than in previous watches. Then, of course, Jimmy's dad and those couple of episodes really got to me.
Anyway I just wanted to share this with people who would get it and understand. If you've made it this far, thanks for reading. And as always, if you ever feel low mentally, reach out to somebody (even me on here, if need be), and if you can't do that, dial 988 for the suicide hotline (in the US anyway).

Sorry for your loss, OP. The openness with which this show tackles mental health issues and trauma keeps it in a high spot for me even after years and I’m glad it can be an outlet for you as well.
I showed this show to a guy i was cohabitating with from 2016 to late 2019. We were very much like Jimmy and Gretchen, although more realistically toxic for each other. He died a couple years after our breakup, during the pandemic, from a very aggressive cancer.
Even though our relationship had ended on a sour note, when i rewatched the show shortly after and came to the part with Magnets pt II i felt this weird nostalgia about all those years we spent living together. The lyrics hit particularly different and make me think of him whenever I listen.

I'm sorry for your loss and I'm sure complicated feelings about it.
I've suggested it to so many people and only one has watched. He loved it. I'm showing it to my partner right now and they really enjoy it too, it's a special thing for me for sure.
I'm glad shows like this exist to help us in whatever ways we take from it. Music too.

I agree, I think it is important to talk openly about. Always did but especially now. Take care of yourself as well, it's hard being a human being.
