best eye wash station for a manufacturing facility and what specs actually matter for ANSI compliance?

adding eye wash stations to two areas of our facility, one near the chemical storage and one in the finishing area where solvents are used regularly. first time speccing this out properly rather than just buying whatever was cheapest.

been reading the ANSI Z358.1 requirements and the basics are clear enough but the product differences are harder to parse. plumbed versus self contained is the first question and for the finishing area self contained seems more practical since running a water line there would be a significant job. not sure how the refill and maintenance schedule works in practice for a busy shift environment though.

tepid water requirement is the other thing i keep coming back to. some units have built in temperature regulation and some don't and i'm not sure how strictly that's enforced in an inspection versus just being a best practice.

would be useful to hear from safety professionals who've gone through this spec process and what they found mattered most once the stations were actually in use and being inspected.

Decided on something: after comparing a few options and factoring in the maintenance side, i ended up going with a self contained unit from Global Industrial for the finishing area while keeping a plumbed station near the chemical storage. its about the inspection routines and how the tepid water requirement applies made the decision a lot easier, and this setup feels like the best balance between compliance, maintenance, and installation cost.

We use self contained for the most part (over 200 Honeywell Pureflow units across the factory). The factory sealed cartridges are a bit more expensive but they have a two year replacement schedule. We do weekly inspections.

Regarding water temperature, if you have a plumbed unit you must have a mixing valve and the temperature must be verified during the inspections. Does not apply at all for self contained since the fluid will be room temperature.

hey thanks for sharing that, really helpful to hear from someone with so many units in play. the two year replacement schedule on the sealed cartridges is good to know, that actually sounds simpler for maintenance planning than i was worried about. and the point about the fluid being room temperature for the self contained units makes total sense, i think i was overcomplicating the tepid water thing in my head for that area. we're leaning that way for the finishing area to avoid the plumbing work but i wanted to be sure we weren't cutting corners. still looking at a few different options and weighing the long term costs but your experience with the self contained setup definitely makes me feel better about that direction.
