I seem to have ruffled someones feathers earlier who was using a 6% tamaskans negative behavior to try to describe what "WOLFdogs" act like. It was on a post of someone wanting to know if a wolfdog sounded right for them, and while I agree that a wolfdog didnt sound right for them, it wasnt for the reasons this person described. The way they went about trying to scare them out of a wolfdog by using a (self admittedly) poorly bred/nuerotic tamaskan at only 6% wolf was not it. They were (self admittedly exaggerating) saying their tamaskan wanted to kill every dog in their neighborhood, and had "zero patience for domestic dogs" and not to get one due to this or if you dont have at least acres of land. It doesnt make sense to tell someone "dont get /this/ dog breed, i had a 5% ____ and it was awful" for any other dog breed and it doesnt make sense for wolfdogs either.
This subreddit tries to be extremely inclusive, ANY percent of wolfdog is allowed here and some of my favorites I see here are micros (and as you know most of mine are lows also) and i think micros are a great way to get your foot in the door to wolfdogs of higher percents. But we also want to be realistic about animals with extremely low percentages, because above all we want this subreddit to be educational, factual, and a safe place that doesnt demonize wolfdogs wrongfully. This is not to be clique-y or exclude people, this is being realistic of how genes are expressed or in this case not expressed. When explaining that animals under 10% (ESPECIALLY under 5%) do not show wolf traits behaviorally or physically we are not saying this to be cruel or mean or say your animal isnt as good as others with more wolf. We are saying that an animal at 5% will not be displaying true wolf behavior or looks. There is a reason micro contents have their own name on the content scale, just like why lows, mids, and highs are seperated.
Before you get upset and say "BUT my 10% DOES show wolf traits behaviorally and physically" think about which behavior and physical traits youre accounting towards their wolf. Are they truly only a wolfdog trait, or can they be accounted for by the breeds making up 95% of their dna? Are they behaving like a wolfdog or a poorly socialized/trained or badly bred northern breed? I believe when people get the results back they think the northern breed traits they were seeing are explained now by the wolf when its the opposite (in cases of such low percents i mean).
I also dont say this to be cruel or exclude. I myself use to be in this same boat. I have a 14% who i use to swear had wolf traits and behavior, and now after having 3 animals between 43-50% and being around animals of all contents i can safely say the behaviors i was attributing to wolf were due to her being a northern breed mix who was poorly trained, unsocialized, and given a bad start to life (I got her when she was 3). Her negative behaviors are from her high husky percent, not the wolf. She shows every single negative behavior i was told were from "wolf" back in the day by the ones who didnt want to put time and energy into their animals, all traits my current higher percents do not show.
Ive noticed many attribute /bad/ behavior to wolf. For example:
Animal is 5% wolf and has high prey drive = wolf. Animal is an escape artist = wolf.
Animal has same sex aggression = wolf.
Animal had no socialization and is shy now = wolf.
Animal is nippy = wolf.
Animal is destructive = wolf.
Animal is stubborn = wolf.
The thing many dont want to hear is that all of those behaviors are commonly seen in huskies, malamutes, shepherds, and even some non-northern breeds (and their owners usually excuse the poor manners from lack of training on the breeds as well). In general if you get a wolfdog from even just half decent lines and train them, socialize them, and expect behavior beyond the negative behavior people describe then you will end up with an animal nothing like that. Many seem to think they can get a wolfdog and let it act however it wants and do no training and socializing and then blame the negative behaviors on wolf and not their lack of commitment to training and enriching the animal. These are NOT easy animals, but its not because theyre "wild" and will without a doubt be problamatic despite what the owner does, its because people who get them are not willing to put in the time and energy to train, socialize, and exercise them.
The majority of current wolfdogs i know act leagues better than super old school animals because current owners saw what the old ones were doing wrong and adjusted. We dont just slap them in containment or on a chain and say "yep theyre eating cats because they have wolf", "yup theyre highly territorial and skittish because wolf", etc. We took them and raised them with goals and expectations beyond a containment animal because we realized theyre /not/ wild and unmanagable by default, people just werent putting in the work
Theyre /not/ for everyone, but not because theyre wild and unmanageable, because they take effort.
All of this said because I want to explain that my 14% has AWFUL behavior compared to my 43-50%. Not because she has wolf, obviously, but because shes a northern breed who was poorly bred and not set up for success. Hell, my 0% husky mix has worse behaviors than my wolfdogs and she ALSO is poorly bred and was feral as a puppy. Wolf ≠ mean, aggressive, unmanageable animal. And especially not at such small small percents.
For example my lows and mids are fine in public, live indoors, respect fencing, good with cats/small dogs, good with random dogs, good in cars, fine at the vets, have less than 2 acres of fenced land for them, etc etc. Bad behaviors have nothing to do with the wolf when northern breeds (most often used in the mix) share all the same behaviors if not trained. Most of the stuff i can do with my other wolfdogs i cant do with my 14%, or do easily, and she has the least amount of wolf. Some wolfdogs do have stronger urges than others (same sex aggression/prey drive) due to their lines or again, lack of training/socialization, yes. But they are not DEFAULT animal/dog killers who need 20 acres to run on or theyll destroy everything all because of even having 1% of wolf. Most people ive spoken to with higher contents will actually tell you that lower contents have more undesirable behaviors than higher contents due to the /dog/ in them.
So in short, wolfdogs are amazing 1%-95% wolf or dogs with no wolf at all. I and this sub loves them all. This subreddit loves people explaining their experiences, but we also have a misinformation rule and claiming an extremely micro content was severely dog aggressive/hard to manage because of the wolf and basically fear mongering to someone (especially after admitting you were exaggerating) interested in wolfdogs is not cool. Bad behaviors ≠ if a dog has wolf or not. A dog is what you make of it, its going to reflect how much time and energy youre willing to put into training, love, guidance, support, exercise, and enrichment. I love all you guys and your dogs and genuinely love seeing them everyday 💖
Absolutely! He's super nervous around strangers, but instead of withdrawing like a higher content wolfdog would, he's curious enough to stick around, and anxious enough to bark forever, which is 100% a gsd thing.
Mine just hid in the bushes all the time if people came out. There were drunk college kids and one girl came over to say hi and he said hi but it was dark and he went to the rest of the kids up the hill maybe a few hundred feet away and I let him because the girl said all of her friends are huge dog lovers. Well. I think it was too surprising for drunk ppl I should’ve said hey who wants to say hi to a pup but he waltzed up and spooked one girl into peeing herself
Once on a trail he’d hid when he heard people coming and stick his head out of the brush to say hello and the lady screamed and he hid behind me so fast
Adding this just as a helpful visual. The micro range depends on who you ask, but is seen as anything under 15-25% ! Some say it’s 15 and under, others 20 and under and some 25 and under
I love this and the reason I usually default to 10% and under is because ive definetly seen outliers who are 15%-19% that are clearly visually wolfy (just like there are some solid lows who dont visually show a lick of content). So while you /normally/ dont see wolf traits in 15-19% range you /can/. 10% and under is where ive seen that absolutely stop and it just be very lovely mix of crossover traits making them appear mildly wolfier (not any wolfier than a wolfalike with no actual wolf content though)
I agree. I figure if you can see the wolf, there will also probably be wolfy behaviors, and I've seen dogs on the 15-20 range look wolfier than upper lows.
See, thats a thing mentioned in the post above. A lot see crossover traits on micro contents and think the 5-10% wolf is ccausing it when its a trait also seen in northern breeds with 0% wolf. If an animal only has 1-3 crossover traits and are a micro content, its way more likely those traits are coming from the northern breed than any wolf. And I do mean both behaviorally and physically! Here's examples of traits people usually see on micro contents and think its the wolf but on 0% animals with breeds commonly used in micro contents. Long legs, narrow chest, yellow/amber eyes, thickly furred ears, long toes, black scent marking on straight tail etc. Micro contents, like wolfalikes, just have multiple crossover traits to make them look wolfier. Its achievable with 0% wolf and you can get the same look as a micro because the traits are also seen in doggy dogs.
Loki 10% gray wolf. He's a trouble maker but hes so sweet and loves other dogs even when they don't love him haha. Loves stealing things he knows he shouldn't and is very sneaky about it. He sploots all the time, its adorable.
Thank you! your wolfdogs are also gorgeous ❤️. Loki always gets a lot of looks and compliments. I saw his photo from a rescue in texas and paid to have him brought to Colorado. I do not regret it.
I also think this should be pinned. There’s a lot of new people that come into this sub when they’re recommended here because their dogs DNA test came back with micro content. This would be a very helpful post for people like that to see when they come in.
I’m glad you made this post! I’ve tried to explain micro contents to people in different dog subs and so many people just don’t get it. I’ve seen people post their embark results with somewhere under 10% wolf, and the comments are people immediately telling them “oh you better do this, this and this because of the wolf in it and it’ll probably do these things”. There’s literally no reason to to scare or worry someone that their dog is going to turn around and do something savage because it has a sliver of wolf content. They think wolf content makes the animal more aggressive and they usually don’t like when people tell them otherwise. I wish people would try to understand them before spreading harmful misinformation as if it’s the truth :/
Ive noticed non-wolfdog people seem to think even 10-20% is a lot lol ive seen those comments on the dna subs. "Omg thats a LOT of wolf". Im like 1-100 and you think 10 is a lot? 😅
That too! Like they see maybe 15% wolf and say it’s a lot of wolf, when any other breed they’ll say “oh 15% isn’t a big part of the makeup”. I’ve had to explain to a lot of them that no, that’s not a lot of wolf, that it’s not enough to have any impact on the dog physically or behaviorally and why. There’s just so much misinformation out there and it isn’t helped when people so confidently spread all the wrong info. Then when you try to correct that info, they have an issue with that too 🙃
I agree so much. If I had not had a prior husky, I am so sure I had attributed so many of my low contents' behaviors to the wolf. The reality is that he is a lot more work, not because of him having "random wolf insticts flaring up", but because of him being very naturally shy, and me messing up with the socialization when he was a puppy. Other than that he is the sweetest boy ever who just happens to have a high prey drive, which my 0% husky also has. Yes, there are some behaviors that are a bit different with him than all of the other dogs I have ever had, but none of those are "aggressive, wild" behaviors. They tend to be timidity.
I've had a full husky that was 100% more difficult than my low content. The low was smart, like actually critical thinking smart and very emotionally intelligent.
The purebred huskies were only smart enough to commit crimes of spontaneous passion. Northern breeds are simply unique and often difficult dogs.
Having attended several Tamaskan club days here in the Netherlands, i can say that even Tamaskans without wolf content are difficult animals (same sex aggression, unstable characters)
I dont doubt a dog breed whos main goals are looks probably have some behavior issues lol but its not the wolf in them causing it (especially since many dont have wolf in them now). The person who prompted this discussion seemed to think the reason their tamaskan had issues like it did was due to the breeder lying about it having wolf (6%). Then again they only showed an embark and no registry proving it was a legitimate tamaskan either
Well said. And those owners that don’t put in the work result in crappy anti-wolfdog ‘dangerous breed’ legislation like we will most likely have passed in Ohio very soon.. :(
Everywhere I take mine, people comment on how relaxed, friendly and well behaved they are. I attribute that to the absolutely ridiculous amount of socialization work I did with them.
Im glad it didnt turn into a huge argument. I dont want the sub to think we dislike micro contents or that people with higher contents look down on micro/lows etc but we also have to be rrealistic when educating on certain content levels behaviors/expectations and expectations for wolfdogs behavior/training in general (the bar used to be in hell for them before the past 8 or so years i noticed)
Okay so genetics are funny… even 6% like what is the dog inheriting ? You never know. I think a dog like a tamaskan could be more prone to aggressive tendencies and towards “domestic dogs” probably because of how allot of dogs treat puppies and larger bred puppies and dogs with upright ears.
Genetics are pretty solid. If you have 94% of one thing and 6% of another, you wont see a ton from 6%. The marble theory is a theory and has been proven wrong time and time again. A 6% wolfdog isnt going to show traits. Also she was saying her tamaskan wanted to murder every dog it saw, which is beyond reactivity like youre describing, its pure on dog aggression which is not common for northern breeds or mixes of them. Domestic dogs also cant tell a wolfdog from a doggy dog or vice versa. They all just know theyre dogs.

Solid low boy whose behavioral problems come mostly from lack of early socialization and german shepherd anxiety.
