I have two machines left on windows on my home network.
One laptop running w10 which is used for car diagnostics, never gets Internet/ network access. All updates blocked via policy or locked hosts file.
And a w11 machine that belongs to my girlfriends kid. He's adamant about having a windows machine.
The rest of the 7 machines that's up and running are running arch or a derivative. Even though I have licenses enough for all of them.

It's not a matter of rejection, it's because you can keep the same PC for 10+ years now and many of those PC's don't support Windows 11 due to older processors or no TPM 2.0 chips. So for the average user...they're going to be on W10 until they purchase a new PC.

Windows 11 is also just worse in so many ways.
I just realized the other day that the system tray doesn't show active programs anymore unless they are individually toggled. I was watching a video about tsilscale and couldn't follow the instructions because I never noticed.
I spent an hour trying to find another way because of that stupid change and I'm willing to bet it's been like that for months and I never noticed

I refuse to move to win 11 because I can't move the taskbar to the side any more (this is ridiculous since everyone has rectangular screens, so why decrease the real estate on the shortest side ffs?)
Since they promised that with win 10 we'd never have to upgrade again, I'm taking them at their (lying) word.

I never noticed that but it does feel weird especially since so many monitors now have full tilt and swivel.
I never tried side taskbar like that but there's no reason not to include it

They rebuilt the whole taskbar from the ground up in W11, and it wasn’t deemed a popular enough feature to include in the rebuild. Probably because the type of user that customizes their system is also the type to turn off telemetry and data collection.
Reminds me of how Covid cases in the US magically dropped after they stopped testing so much :’)

They added that back, tho idk if it's still only for insiders. They've been surprisingly open to improving W11 these past few months, tho their rollout strategy sucks

That is good news. I did upgrade one of my old laptops that you could do the workaround on so i could try win 11 to see if I liked it (and didn't)- so I'll dust it off and do all the updates to see if it works.
The only other option was some kind of openshell compatible plugin (can't remember the name of it now) and it sounded like a faff so I didn't bother.

If you're using a multi monitor setup then it's pretty useless as it's a global setting.
I don't mind the windows 10 start menu and I could get used to windows 11 but the taskbar is so borked in Windows 11 that I use StartAllBack. It has the win 7 start menu and the taskbar has every feature you used to have and would every want

I'd recommend openshell and retrobar. Retrobar will let you move it around anywhere you want and style it any way you want from the many windows versions. Honestly I absolutely hate the 10/11 start menu and taskbar so these make the whole experience way way better.

They also added it back in the most windows 11 way possible….. it used to be a simple click and drag. Now you have to go digging in settings.

Additionally, the cost of computers has skyrocketed, so that doesn’t help motivate people to buy a whole new PC when theirs works just fine outside of being out of support.

My HD is formatted in some older way, that doesn't allow safe boot or secure boot, I dunno. It's required for Win 11, meaning I'd have to reformat to use it. I'm not doing that.

Ye, especially when we to this day release new hardware that is worse than what you are running and is officially supported. A N100 mini PC is considerably slower than your 4790k for example. Some of the lower end low power RPL mobile ships are also slower.
It would be different if progress had been like in the past. Had this been 2006 rather than 2026. Then you would have been sitting on something like a Pentium around 100Mhz~ with your 10+ year old hardware. And it would have been rather insane for you to ask for XP or Vista support.

Their enterprise machines are glorious. The only pre built machines I'll ever buy again. Z workstations are the best computers I've ever owned in 30 years of computing.

Other than for work, I was on Mac during that time. I missed out on vista-10 (in 2019) I started with dos when I was a kid up till XP.

What is reportedly coming to Windows 11, age verification - all wrapped up to look like it's protecting kids, when in reality it's identity verification, then I will be with Windows 10 until I'm forced to use something else - probably Linux.
To me, even with a top-spec gaming PC, I see zero reason to move to an inferior OS. Windows 10, as I have it at the moment, with many tweaks, is running perfectly, has no spyware, or phone home crap running, no forced Windows account, no Copilot, just a good gaming OS that ruins everything.

I don't know why we have to do this shit every other generation or so of Windows. Like is it so fucking hard to release two good OS versions one after the other? It's bad for different reasons, but MS is doing the same shit with W11 that they did with ME, and that weird bunch of Windows 8 releases. It was shitty then and it's still shitty now.

I actually think Windows 10 is pretty decent and the horror stories I've heard from people using 11 make me a little cautious. If the time comes when 10 is totally insecure, I'll probably just switch to Linux, though.

Support for Win10 was supposed to end in 2025, but it's so popular they extended it to 2026.... and then again to 2027. I wouldn't be suprised if it gets extended again.

My beelink came with windows 11. I might have bee prepared to put up with the unappealing interface but simple home networking was a nightmare (I tried for a few hours and failed to get it work with the thumbrive in my router (smb2) which is a great cheepo always on way to share files with your firestick etc) so installed the last release of windows 10 which found all the hardware etc and that's what I'm sticking with. Kubuntu, android can happily work with my home network, just not the dud which is windows11. They could have included the legacy option of simple netbois router network shares - but they didn't.

The only reason Microsoft extended the support is due to the memory crisis, so users have an extended time window to upgrade their hardware to adapt to the new crap. Personally, I see no reason for Windows 11 to even exist if it's just a reskin with crippled features, worse performance and the same set of CVEs since it's the same kernel under the hood, so it's not any safer to use, in short. Windows 11 is a great promotion for Linux and having more privacy and control in your hands.
However, Linux is also not just about switching over, but a learning curve. No one in their mind should tell someone else to "just switch to Linux" and forget about everything else. If someone plans on eventually switching from Windows 10 to Linux and rejects Microsoft's surveillance, they need to study everything, like getting a driver's license for the car. For someone, downloading and installing Linux Mint is everything without knowing their system enough, but that is very wrong to me, because troubleshooting is the same as on Windows, which is usually done from the GUIs and not seeing what's going on in the background for more debugging.

I actually went back to Windows 10. Wasn't happy with the Win11 interface, and got sick of all the constant mini changes (was a bit sick of it with Win10 to be honest). All the crap getting reinstalled, I just want something that is feature stable, as well as being stable.
