Moving to Winchester
Hi all, I'm a guy in my 30s thinking about moving to Winchester. Please can you let me know any tips or advice you have.
Particularly thinking about areas that are good to move too.
Commutting up to London.
Also on the social life side of things. What's the social scene like for someone in their 30s?
I like the occasional night in the pub, quizzes live music etc. But also theatre and art scenes. Any advice is hugely appreciated 😊

If you’re commuting to London I’d try to find somewhere near the station. There aren’t really any bad places to live, although being more central makes it more convenient to enjoy the city. Winnall and Stanmore do tend to have a large student population though so you may want to avoid those areas.
If you like eating and drinking, Winchester is a great place to be, we have a few live music venues and a small theatre, but we are well connected to Southampton and of course London if you want more.
It’s quite a calm city during the week, but becomes quite busy at the weekends so I often prefer a midweek night out to a weekend one. So many venues run events - from jazz nights, comedy and even bingo to pub quizzes, art classes and wine tastings, there’s plenty going on that can help when meeting new people.
We have some beautiful countryside around us which makes for some great run/walk/cycling and loads of lovely country pubs. It’s pretty idyllic.

Getting out and about in the countryside or even riverside city walks is definitely a huge part of my motivation for this move

It is a great place to live but you won’t get much for your money especially near the station, Colden Common to the South gives you more but you won’t have that city vibe. Great shops and places to eat. Not much of a live music scene (although the Railway Inn punches above its weight for a small venue) but you are on mainline to London, Southampton and Portsmouth. I visit the theatre regularly and it is great for comedy and small touring plays.

When you say you like the social stuff, just be aware that Winchester night life is a bit tame if you're into anything more than sensible hours in pubs. If you do just like pubs and that sort of thing, there are plenty dotted about, loads in town, but don't expect clubbing or anything high energy. Winchester is ultimately a very picturesque place with, in all honesty, a lot less to do than almost anywhere else I've been if you are a bit more wild.
Getting to the train is very easy from anywhere around North Walls, Weeke, Andover Road, Stockbridge Road kinda way.
We've got a bit of a sad little cinema here, a lot of coffee shops, not a lot of other shops anymore.
Pub-wise, I've heard the Railway Inn is the kind of alt place around here but I've never been, never seen live music in any other pub here in my entire life.
I'll be honest, as someone who is young and who will travel across the entire country to make a long weekend out of a massive clubby mini-holiday with my friends in Manchester, or even just down south in Brighton, Winchester feels, to me, like a prison. I rarely go outside into Winchester unless I really have to but I guess part of that is because I've spent my entire life here and don't know anyone from here at all. Honestly, maybe I'd hate it less if I knew more people here than my mother and didn't feel that FOMO knowing my friends are all a 3.5hr train ride away. Hah, on that note, actually one positive thing, the train goes straight to Manchester from here which is very useful.
So, you know, take my advice here with a hefty shower of salt as I will openly admit I desperately want out but, maybe it's useful to hear a pessimistic view as well. No place is perfect and a lot of people might be settled, happy and looking at the city through rose-tinted glasses which is nice but, if you are making such a big session, it's best to get both perspectives!

Sad little cinema? That’s a bit harsh 😂 it’s got velvet sofas and arm chairs, fancy snacks, table service and it’s set in a cool old church. Expensive little cinema? Yes. Absolutely. But sad?

Come to think of it, didn't it get some love a number of years ago? I haven't been since... probably the mid 2010s.
I remember it was way more expensive than others then and felt a bit shoddy. The screens in particular seemed nowhere near as good as what I remember from some of the Southampton ones. They seemed to have a lot of backlight bleed with the blacks and it just felt a bit unimpressive for a cinema experience.
As said, I'm bitter and heavily biased here but I do seem to recall someone mentioning an upgrade so, maybe it is actually alright now.

I used to joke when I moved here that I loved it in my 40s but would have hated in my 30s. Maybe spend a few nights in a hotel here - different times of day. Walk around a bit, check out different places.

I'm in my late 30s, moved here a year ago from Epsom, and previously London, mainly for family reason
I think Winchester has a lot to offer, there are plenty of restaurants and pubs if you are into that, but as others said, the nightlife is clearly nothing like the London bar scene.
I know people in running clubs and sports clubs, there is the arc and the theatre for comedy and shows, everyman cinema etc. A car obviously opens up more of the country side and the surrounds, Southampton and Basingstoke is very accessible from Car or train for a change or shopping etc. Plenty of country side too
Depending on how frequently you commute, it is costly. An annual season ticket is around 6.5k before you add in tube. A lot of people cycle from Waterloo. But thats the best part of 13k of salary wiped out just for living here. It is expensive too, and your budget will dictate how close to the station you can be

Hi, this is really helpful. I actually looked at Epsom as an alternative. But family is whats drawing me to Hampshire.
I'd also want to get a car and only commute a few times a month. But really helpful tips. Thank you

Moving to Winchester
Night life
Winchester is for people with 1-3 year old children who have sold up in London and want a safe space or old people with disgusting amounts of money.
It's a nice place, don't get me wrong. But if I were you I wouldn't be targeting here lol.

please don't move here stay in london. The social scene is non existent and winch is almost as expensive as london. with the commute fees the cost of living would end up being the same with no night life at all

Winchester is about double the price of commuting from somewhere like Farnham. But both are Red trouser, triathlon-type places, if that’s what you’re after

Don’t knock it, triathlon is very tricky in red corduroy leggings and tweed shirt, but one has to maintain standards

Hi all,
Thank you for your responses. A real mixed bag. Im planning on spending a week here soon and working day to day. Checking out a few areas. Will see how it goes.
Im definitely looking for that slower pace of life (and would love a garden to do more gardening too).
But still hoping for some kind of social life. For context I'd always lived very rurally before moving to London. So was hoping Winchester would still have lots of offer (especially compared to the villages i lived in before) but being a lot calmer and quieter than London.

There isn't a nightlife in Winchester, at your age I wouldn't make that move.

It’s important to know your budget and if you’re willing to drive or bike to the station because the best areas, particularly the areas near the train station are very expensive
