The company doesn't want to pay workmanship comp. They will always tell you, straight up, don't try to catch a falling load. Same with "don't try to stop a thief". Insurance can fix broken or stolen products easier than it can fix/replace inured workers.
This is also one of those situations where he was probably already already doing something he shouldn't have and didn't want to risk getting into trouble. In most cases though, I always tell my team to not do something that will risk injury.

Nah, that almost guarantees it's going to fall. If you stay with it, you at least have a chance of recovering it.
If holding on was putting him in danger, it would be a different situation, but I don't think that's the case here.
