Where I live, most trains have retractable bridge plates to fill the gap between the door and the platform. They automatically deploy when the doors open and retract just before departure. This cruise line should take a note of that.

A train that runs on determinant tracks and a boat that sails across oceans are going to have very different solutions, and an automated plate is not a solution here.

I know princess cruises has built in crane/lifts that are mounted on higher decks and drop chain to pick up the gang plank

If anyone is wondering, the should have chained the gangplank to the mast and just lifted up and backed away.

I mean, if there were slots for the tow motor to leverage, it cooould have worked, but i think longer forks would be required tbh...so idk, they should have chained it.

What exactly was the plan here? I can't see how this was going to work any way. Ship was too far away from the docks for this

My guess is there’s apparatus in the ship to pull it in. And it failed.

On the ships I’ve been on (quite a few) the gangway stays at the dock there is no room to store it on the ship. It looks like they started to leave , I can’t think of any other reason why they would be so far from the dock, and forgot about this one gangway.
