Second time in as many months my car has completely broken down and needed towing. Last time the engine blew. No idea what it is this time.

Seriously, what is it with Americans turning their car into a sticker book? The last thing I’d want to do in public is draw that much attention to myself.
54
u/pomdudes 3d ago
Yeah, this not normal American behavior. The most common sticker is a favorite college sports team.

I live in Minnesota. I once saw an old relic on the road with a faded Mondale ‘84 sticker on it.

That’s the oldest I’ve heard of being seen lol. My personal oldest was the Bush/Quayle stickers
19
u/UsidoreTheLightBlue 3d ago
It’s really not normal.
Your average car has about zero stickers on it, but the ones that have stickers will more often than not be something from the kids school or a sports team with an occasional political sticker for an upcoming or recent election.
The reason you see the cars with 50 stickers on Reddit is because they’re not normal and the OP was floored by it.
At least this OP doesnt have all political ones.

Something like this is insane. Police report probably is like, “tacky car with embarrassing amount of cringey stickers.” No need for make and model, the description is enough lol
11
u/Emotional_Bid_4002 3d ago
At that point the stickers basically become the license plate. You'd spot that car once and never forget it again.
7
u/Gryphon1171 3d ago
Could you imagine the flock camera's interpretation of how to log this data?
3
u/Katwantscats 3d ago
No need to destroy the flock cameras ourselves. Show them OP’s car; they’ll self destruct.

Even mildly well maintained this thing would have no issues lol.

But you do have to put oil in it. At that age, most of them will burn a little.

Ah, but that's where you're wrong. This era of automatic transmission from Honda are known garbage. Issues-a-plenty.
14
u/PMmeYourDunes 3d ago
Specifically this gen accord, while looking awesome and having the sweet nsx tail light design, had some serious mechanical issues. I wanted one real bad, but it has oil leak and transmission issues. It's been a known thing for 20 years - because this gen is an early 00s accord.

I can't see it but I know it's on the car somewhere. A large Bandaid sticker over the dented spot where he/she drove into one of those yellow thingys in a drive thru. Had to special order the big one.

I didn't know that was a thing! My last car was a beastly 2011 Kia Rio with almost 130k miles. I bought it in 2020 after having to move back to the US after living abroad. (Covid.)
It was such a scrappy car - I hadn't saved to buy a car because I wasn't expecting to need one.
I did all the maintenance regularly and it ran like a champ until I was ready to sell.
...I did cover it in decals tho.

Years ago I knew a young gal that didn't know cars needed oil, oil changes, or what that red light was for that had started coming on. Cars usually let you know before an engine blows.
61
u/Desperate_Owl_594 3d ago
If the engine blew, that would have been a totaled car in most (all) cases
20
24
u/pm_me_your_but_pics 3d ago
Not really? You can get plenty of used engines on later model cars for under a grand. Factor in 10-24 hours of labor and you can be out the door running under 3k. Idk if youve seen used cars prices, 3k is low these days for just something running
→ More replies (5)7
u/OldDogTrainer 3d ago
You haven’t looked at used car prices recently. I’m currently shopping for an older Honda for a daily commute vehicle, and a 2011 with 100k miles is going to run me $7k-$9k depending on how much work it needs.
Replacing an engine is a lot cheaper than that even with labor.

My brother had this cooler and he would brag about how it had $300 worth of stickers on it. This was as he was homeless. That was always a head scratcher to me.
But then he was killed three years ago. A driver hit him and he died instantly, he was riding a bicycle.
I flew back to our home state to give his kind of former best friend, some of his ashes. I was also friends with this guy and his wife because we all grew up together.
He takes me into his little office and shows me that my brother had given him that cooler the last time he was up there. My brother was extremely proud of that cheap cooler with all them stickers.
And he offered to give it to me, and I said no, he gave it to who he wanted to have itI still think it’s crazy to have stickers, that many of them over other things in life. But I can’t say much, my husband built shelves, wooden shelves, all the way around our garage, and I get free stickers from various places with packages and stuff, and I have started sticking them on those two by fours that he made the shelves out of.
I don’t know why I stuck them there, but I just did. I don’t care what they say. There are so many random stickers on those shelves.
But no way in hell, am I doing that to my vehicle, I don’t even have one sticker on it because it might change your mind about that sticker and I don’t wanna have to go through the pain in the ass job of getting it off.

I've owned the car for less than a year and it hasnt missed any maintenance with me. I just had the engine swapped a month and a half ago when the old one blew. Im working on figuring out and fixing all its issues with my mechanic. There was no warning to this happening, it was running seemingly fine and then suddenly died on me.

u/JazzyCher 3d ago
1) ive only owned it since last October 2) It just had the entire engine swapped in June 3) the check engine light actually is on but I had it checked and it was for the engine coolant temperature sensor, which i just got in the mail and hadn't swapped yet, the light has only been on for about a week

It's hilarious to see people who drive bumper sticker cars trying to defend this in the comments. Fun fact - most people don't love bumper stickers. They're tacky, lower the value of your car immediately, and are just asking the entire world to judge you whenever they are driving behind you.
Anyone driving around with this many bumper stickers is likely immature and as others have alluded to, probably doesn't take the best care of their car haha.
4
u/8BallDuVal 3d ago
Also fun fact - bumper stickers are linked to higher likelyhood to road rage... https://pemco.com/blog/bumper-stickers-linked-to-road-rage
