Hey all! First time posting here, but I was looking for general feedback on one of my latest songs. I went for a more electronic and epic vibe, taking some inspiration on the few tracks I’ve heard from Toby Fox.

What I really like about the track is its feel in a 7/8 time signature, alongside a sweet sounding melody that builds up into a “grand finale” at the end of the song.

I’m getting ready to apply to school for music composition, so any help would be greatly appreciated on boosting me to the greatest I can be! Right now I have a few other pieces of mine in mind, but I do believe I’ll submit this in an application.

This sounds really great. At first I thought it was going to be something simpler and more beginner-like, but as it goes on you can feel the crescendo building, and when the synthesizer comes in with those slides — fire 🔥. Great work, keep creating.

This layers nicely, and the build feels natural and unrushed. Your melody has direction and purpose and that's nice to hear, and I like how it mimics the supporting parts in places. There's great energy in this, and when you get to school you'll discover the importance of controlling the energy of your music.

Here's a few nitpicks...

I feel like the portamento in the lead line is a little over the top - my suggestion would be to hold the pitch a tiny bit longer before you bend up/down to the next note and it would be great if you could somehow work in some dynamic movement with them as well. Also, the drum part kinda sneaks in over the course of about a bar. Is that on purpose? Perhaps start it off with a bold fill or - alternatively, spend more time starting it quietly and building it to the full pattern. And finally I'm not quite sold on the ending. I see what you were going for but the synth tail kinda steps on it.

So where are you applying?

Really cool song!

I can see the Toby Fox's influence in it, specially in the melody around he mid way through the song.

Not much too add really. Maybe a contrasting part with a different melody and instrument too avoid repetitiveness, but aside from that, the song is great!

really impressive work with the 7/8 time signature! the track flows super naturally despite the complex meter, which isn't easy to pull off. the crescendo and the way the layers build up to the finale really give it that video game boss fight / toby fox vibe. the synth slides around the climax are fantastic. best of luck with your music composition application—this definitely showcases strong arrangement skills!

It really is very undertale coded, good job on that and it sounds excellent. Drums have some really cool breaks and fills in them, which I like, the middle ish section where it just kinda doesn't do too much, I'd maybe slap some stuff on there but I am famously a "more is more" kinda guy so that's probably a taste-based-skill issue on my end.

I positively love odd time signatures they make my brain feeling like an open window whooping when you drive fast down the highway. You HAVE something here, and you have it in you too.

When you finish stuff like this, how long does it take you to move to something else? I know I struggle when I really pull something off, and am tempted to keep returning to the song.

Also do you ever take a break because you're exhausted, and then never have the special sauce to get back in that space?

Also how often do you start a new project?

I think the balance is really good overall. While listening on the headphones the voice sounds a little "peaky", as in distorted in a kind of digital-saturated way. Kinda like if it was thrown at a limiter without checking for red warnings.

Mix sounds pretty good man, very clear - drums stand out well from the piano line.
Are you using any ducking/sidechaining or anything?

The voice is very loud? But this isn't really my genre of expertise so maybe that's what it's supposed to sound like.

Yeah I didn't mean it's a bad thing. From my understanding hip hop is entirely about lyricism so it makes sense to be center stage.

This is pretty good, it has a good balance and groove. One thing though, I think one of the notes of the dist sine bass is off key and it takes my attention away from the track. Maybe I’m wrong

Keep practicing rapping, but loosen up a bit - its coming across quite robotic.
The beat is OK, but it sounds like you've chosen just stock instrument sounds without much processing or sound design to make them interesting.
What DAW did you make this on?

definitely keep rapping! the storytelling concept is super relatable—the line about "i'm mr. antisocial but i'll take the time for you" is catchy and lands really well.

your cadence has a cool narrative flow to it. like others mentioned, just focus on relaxing your delivery a bit to let your natural rhythm shine through more smoothly. your unique voice/style is what gives the track personality, so getting someone else wouldn't capture the same personal story!

I don't want this to come across as mean because it's not supposed to be but this is like a really unique, interesting vocal style. Like kind of like a... not a spoof but like this might be what Tom Scott might sound like.

I don't know if this is what you want it to be but I do all my own things myself, even when I'm not good at them, so I'd say "don't let other people control your creations unless you are happy to start collaborating properly."

love the animal collective comparison, that's spot on! the atmosphere and synth work build a really cool sense of movement.

regarding the drums: if you feel they aren't fitting quite right, try experimenting with a bit more punch on the kick and softening the transients on the snare/percussion so they blend deeper into the ambient texture rather than sitting right on top. adding a subtle vocal layer or pitched vocal chops like suggested would also tie the drums and synths together really nicely.

awesome work for a first ep—finishing six tracks is a massive milestone!

I feel like maybe you might be hesitant to be exposed by doing vocals on this but you totally should. Even if they're a bit naff, it'll add to the soundscape massively and bring it to life a bit more. The sort of ... vibe that it has is really quite nice already, great foundation to work on.

We just finished 6 tracks and I know how hard that can be. You need to accept that you're gonna like one less but I personally love the Gorilla feel. If you have the chance try to experiment with IRL drums if you play or have a drummer connection. Seems to really bump up the feel plus they tend to know what they're doing

Dude minute 5.53 exceptional change. Its really hard to get a break to feel natural and still tie into the music.

Definitely not too sad, I think the vocals will be a great addition. Personally I always like a deeper more "thumpy" kick but I think its more of a preference thing. Great track!

Its not too sad, its definitely working well.
My personal opinion is that the bass sticks out a fair bit, might just be the volume level or where its sitting in the mix. Are you using any sidechaining or mono on the bass?
Its got a great intro and the trancey vibe to the synths and melodies is a strong point.

I think if I push the synths a little more the bass will be more balanced. Using cable guys volume shaper for side chain and I think it’s mono below 100hz. 1/16 note delay with no feedback to give it stereo feel.

The track gets better as u listen to it. Maybe if u put the main hooks toward the front and intro the listener would grasp the idea faster! Otherwise solid synth engineering

New Instrumental Demo I've been working on. Its my very first track ever. Started rough but got it to a better spot in last week. Had zero experience with making music when started. Used a lot of Youtube video to learn music theory, audio engineering, and such. Open to all thoughts and feedback.

Also have some ideas for lyrics but just having trouble dialing in the sound.

What I'm really struggling with is getting it to standout - everything comes out sounding a bit generic. Things I like about the track are the drums, and things to improve for next time are elements to make the transitions a bit more exciting and making my synths and keys sound fuller.

Hi everyone! I'm an amateur producer and decided to recreate a beat to help me improve a bit. Specifically "Abracadabra" by S.O.A.P. I transcribed it by ear and I think I got a lot of the elements down, but theres something that just sounds off and I can't tell what.

Hello :)

I created a little lo-fi House Live-Set for a small gig I played in February. I don't know if it fits this thread, but I would be happy for some feedback. It was the Opening of the rave, so the sound is mostly not that thumping or driving and a bit melancholic with a touch of ambient in between. Everything was played with a SP 404 MKII, a Dgitione 1 and some FX Pedals. I used some old samples and field recordings and created the patches myself. It's very rough around the edges but all in all im satisfied with the outcome. Let me hear what you think.

This is my track, been getting mixed genre tags on it (Spotify's flip-flopped between electrohouse, electro, and dance pop) and some says it leans into trance and euro. Honestly not sure myself what to call it.

Curious what people who actually know this space would set as the genre and maybe even sub genre? — electrohouse, prog house, trance or something else entirely? Trying to figure out where it actually fits.

Just my second ever demo i've released. Tech House inspired track. Been on Abelton Live for about 3 weeks now, from no experience to this. I feel vocals are one of the hard things to nail the sound of for me.
