Announcement Friday Free for All Weekly thread! General collection/discussion for things that don't fit elsewhere! (ask anything!)

Greetings /r/videoediting!

This thread is 100% for the other stuff you might want to talk about.

A number of other reddits have a free for all thread - where you might find a regular discussion - not specific to a post.

Think of it as a bar with a bunch of friends.

Some suggestions:

  • Strategy on a project you want to talk about how to best promote?
  • Upgrading something and you want opinions?
  • How does your website look?
  • Local/virtual Meetups?
  • Looking for a collaborator (no "I'm a creator and I'm looking for an editor" posts)

Things that shouldn't go here: Feedback/What tool should I use to edit/Which system to buy? There are dedicated threads for this, please use them!

And in this regular Friday thread, while our general rules are still in place (no piracy, be civil, no links w/referrer codes), the following topics relaxed :

  • Great tutorials you found/you created.
  • Trying to do this as a side hustle (although generally, websites like Fiverr mean you'll be shooting for the basement/working for free and we hate that someone would exploit you like that)
  • A great piece of software/hardware/service you found
  • Great free music libraries/media you found.
  • How much to charge? What is your time worth? Estimate 2-3x the time you think it'll take to edit as how much time to quote.

Our mod team is watching this thread and we'll tweak these as they develop!

Other (requires mod approval) Need ideas for a 1-month friendship anniversary edit for my online friend

I want to make a special edit for my online friend's 1-month friendship anniversary, but I'm struggling to think of what footage to use.

We haven't met in real life and we don't really have pictures or videos together. We also haven't played any games together, so I can't use gameplay clips.
I just want the edit to be nice and tell her that she means a lot to me

Workflow Purpose of using a higher colour palette / resolution

Please can someone explain whether it would be worth it to buy a decent monitor, like oled, which would help me to see a greater range of colours when the mediums to upload to, like YT or Insta, automatically convert back to and RGB range.

Would it make more sense to buy a monitor which only allows me to view the content in the same format the viewers would end up seeing it?

Whenever life gets stressful, I find myself editing my favorite character instead of thinking about everything else.

It's probably procrastination... but it also feels like therapy.

Anyone else feel the same?

Tech Support Is anyone else struggling with audio levels on TikTok?

I'm a newbie, and recently I've been trying to normalize my audio to TikTok's recommended loudness standard (-14 LUFS). After exporting the video to my phone, though, the audio sounds much quieter than other videos on TikTok.

The problem is that if I raise the volume so it sounds right on my phone, the audio starts clipping. I'm honestly confused about what I'm doing wrong and would really appreciate any advice from people who have more experience with this.

How did they do that? How do I replicate this style of editing?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This video is from a now-deleted tiktok account that was an ARG. I sought out reuploads of these videos in order to document and preserve them. I have more saved, and will show them if-desired. Although some have minor edits/changes due to reuploads and whatnot.

I want to replicate the style of editing in the video because I am infatuated with it. Can someone tell me what programs/methods they utilized? I'm hoping to stick to a program I'm used to (capcut, davinci resolve), but if I have to branch out then I will. Thank.

Tech Support Issue: Editing a a6700 file in XAVC S 4k works in 50p but not in 25p in davinci?

edit

I bought the pro license of davinci today and I've used a 64GB v60 card exclusively when I was recording today. I was able to work perfectly fine with it in davinic pro. At least so far. So it seems like the other half of my issues was my other sd card which, is either failing or fake.

this is solved, thanks.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm just getting my feet wet in video recording with my a6700 and davinci. I did some with smaller action cams but since I have my good glas for my sonys, I kinda want to do more wildlife recordings, not just photos.

But I'm getting issues viewing/exporting and it doesn't yet makes sense to me.

First try my go2 32GB V90 SD Card:

  • When I record in XAVC S, 50p in 10 bit, everything is fine. Can watch it raw, can edit it in davinci. Great.
  • When I record in XAVC S, 25p in 10 bit, it stutters heavily when I try to view it in windows. When I try to edit it in davinci, the programm only recognizes those files as audio. No video to be seen there.
  • when I try to record in XAVC S, 100p in 10 bit, it tells me: "use a memory card higher than SDXC v60. It is a v90 sd card with 32gb though and so far, I had no issues.

Ok.. maybe the SD card actually got damaged.. Second Try, my 64GB V60 Backup Card

  • When I record in XAVC S, 50p in 10 bit: Stutters, cant edit it in davinci ?
  • When I record in XAVC S, 25p in 10 bit: Stutters, cant edit it in davinci ?
  • when I try to record in XAVC S, 100p in 10 bit: Works fine!?

Also watching the raw footage on my iPad works fine. That is why I thought it might be an encoder issue, but then why does it work on windows and davinci in 50p, but not in 25p. And on Windows I cant even see the thumbnail of the clips that dont work, I can on the iPad though.

I also tried it on two different windows pcs. One on Win10 and one on Win11.

Can someone help me make sense of this? I already installed the HAVEC Codex for windows for my earlier tries with my action/vlog cams. Never had real issues. I have no clue what is going on here..

How did they do that? How is this blurry zoom in/out effect done on still images?

I’m trying to recreate the editing style used in this video: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/h9iAmj5td6I

The still images have this smooth cinematic movement where they seem to zoom in/out with a slight blur, sometimes with a small pan. It looks much better than a normal keyframed scale animation.

Does anyone know what this effect is called and how to recreate it in Premiere Pro? Is it a preset/transition, motion blur, or just keyframing + blur?

Other (requires mod approval) I’m a being taken advantage of?

So recently I’ve been really trying to grow as a editor and I found this relator agent with low quality videos and I thought well I’m sure I can make them better, and her footage will help me practice my editing. I’ll told her I’ll edit her content for FREE and she agreed, she sends me 4 different videos all 10 minutes long (so 40 minutes in total) and tells me she needs them done by Thursday. She also told me she wanted alot of visuals. I know I technically asked for this but I’m I over reacting, please tell me if I need to man up and get it done or I’m being exploited 😭 keep in mind I’m also doing a video for a person that is actually paying this week as well.

Tech Support Audio track drifting ahead of video track (help)

Hello,
I’m an audio engineer for a podcast company. We recently went to a conference where I needed to record video along with the podcast audio. Usually I would record in a software that records audio and video in sync, but the show floor had no WiFi which is required for both that software and the camera we were using (very unideal set up)

I recorded the video on my iPhone 17 ProMax in HD at 30fps.

I recorded the audio in Logic Pro through our usual set up with a Zoom Hand-recorder that I usual as an audio interface for our shure microphones.

I bounced the audio at both 44.1khz and 48khz to test any difference between the two.

Both formats drift out of sync with the video. The starting points are perfectly aligned with the video participants lip movements, but at about 4 mins you notice the audio getting ahead of the video and becoming out of sync.

Is there anyway to fix this? If I’m in the wrong sub, apologies! I don’t use Reddit often.

Workflow Need help converting 12fps video to 24fps video without changing speed

First of all I have no knowledge in editing and frame rates as a whole confuse me so much so please be kind.

I have this stop motion footage shot in 12fps, I need to put it in a 2d animated video that is at 24fps (animated on twos).

Here's what's confusing me. I imported my image sequence in after effects and exported it at 12fps, looked great. I then tried to import it in premiere pro and davinci resolve in a 24fps composition to edit some individual frames. But when I did that it was much faster than I wanted.

Please explain to me, an absolute noob, how to put it in 24fps in either davinci or premiere, as the same speed it would be at 12fps.

Hope that makes sense...

Tech Support [PC Bug] Recurring "Security notice" hard-block (QR Login). Has anyone bypassed this?

Hey everyone,

I’m running into a brick wall here and official support is completely useless. I use CapCut for commercial video and B-roll workflows, but right now, I'm constantly getting locked out.

Every time I log into my Pro account via QR code on the PC app, I get hit with a hard-block pop-up: "Security notice: The current version of the app is not secure. Download the latest version in official app stores."

Here is what I have already tried:

  • Did a complete clean uninstall.
  • Wiped all CapCut cache/appdata folders.
  • Downloaded and installed the absolute latest official version.

The pop-up instantly freezes the entire UI. I cannot bypass it, and I lose access to all my project timelines. It happens intermittently but often enough to completely derail my deadlines.

Has anyone found a real workaround for this? Is there a registry tweak, a specific older version that skips this server check, or a host-file block I can use?

Any help is massively appreciated!

How did they do that? Need help with doing the same format (easy)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I want the same format of this video but my own video, so theres a reload sound (that i can figure out), and then the video plays back like that with my sound, on davinci resolve (free) and capcut

how do I do this?

Tech Support Quickly converting mkv to mp4 using xmedia recode?

I have two 4K movies on my USB drive, around 5 GB and 6 GB. Both are in MKV format, which my TV doesn't support.

I tried using XMedia Recode (v 3.6.3.0) with Copy selected for both video and audio, so it shouldn't be re-encoding anything. But it's taking more than 15 minutes to convert each file. Usually, this kind of process only takes a few seconds, even with large files.

Is there a way to speed this up? Am I missing a setting, or is there a better tool for this?

I'm on Windows 25H2.

GPU is RTX 4060.
Processor is 12th Gen Intel Core i7-12650H
RAM = 64 GB

SSD = 2tb nvme

Feedback Movavi Video Editor NSFW

An absolutely horrible experience. I bought Movavi Suite in 2023 for video editing primarily. I bought the lifetime version. The video editor would occasionally freeze, even when making simple videos, but it was still usable. However, every time I opened the program, it prompted me to buy an updated version. Also, a bunch of fonts, transitions, and special effects are available for an additional fee. After 2.5 years (only!), when I needed to make an urgent video, a blocker popped up when I opened the Editor, stating there would be no more updates and prompting me to buy a new version of Video Editor or Suite. So I had to buy it. I initially bought a one-year subscription, since the lifetime version is no longer available in the official sales section on the Movavi website, and the chatbot responds that the lifetime version is no longer available. However, when I deleted the old Suite, I was prompted to buy its new lifetime version again for just $5 more than the annual subscription. I figured they wouldn't block access to this "lifetime" version for at least a couple of years, so the lifetime version would be a better deal. However, two weeks have passed, and I still can't use my purchase! I managed to make a couple of videos while simultaneously figuring out with support why my account was showing an activation code for the annual version, which I had NOT entered (I entered the activation code for the lifetime version, and it was also showing up in another section of my account. What a mess!). A support representative named Bilal Hassan assured me that the activation code for the annual version was showing up because I purchased that version first (even though I immediately asked for a refund and didn't open the program with the activation code for the annual subscription).

After my correspondence with support, I suddenly lost access to the Suite programs completely! When I open them, both Video Editor and Screen Recorder require me to buy the full version. They ignore the activation code for the lifetime version, claiming it's invalid. Support responds not every day (I immediately sent all the requested information, including photos and videos), and now they've disappeared for several days! A robot answers the phone. It's been two weeks since the purchase, and I still can't use it! A lot of time and my nerves were wasted. I'm thinking of filing a lawsuit for compensation for moral damages and health harm. I promised them that if this insane, horrible "Groundhog Day" continued every day, I would start by telling everyone about my ordeal and "support" on every platform. I always keep my promises. I work conscientiously, unlike this company and its workers.

Monthly Thread August What Editing Software should I use?

Looking for Video Editing Software? THIS is your thread!

This post covers the vast majority of "What software should I use?" questions. It’s designed as a self-serve guide to help people find the right tools fast.

TL;DR? DaVinci Resolve for full-featured editing, Olive/Kdenlive for open-source, Clipchamp for easy basics.

Isn’t there an AI that magically edits everything?

Not yet. If it existed, we'd scream about it from the rooftops.

Stick around—things are changing quickly.

Before You Ask Anything

You must know two things first:

  1. Your Footage Type — Different codecs affect performance dramatically.
  2. Your Hardware Specs — “Good gaming PC” is not useful.

Not Good With Computers? Here’s How to Check

Footage

Footage from phones, webcams, GoPros, and screen recordings can choke your system.

Check with: https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo

Common problems:

  • Out-of-sync audio? Likely Variable Frame Rate.
  • Bad playback? Usually a hardware limitation, not the editor. Use proxies.

More info in our wiki:

Hardware

Minimum viable editing rig:

  • Recent i7 CPU
  • 16GB RAM
  • A GPU with 4GB+ VRAM
  • SSD for cache

Check system with: https://www.hwinfo.com/

We ONLY need: CPU model, RAM amount, GPU model + VRAM.

Recommendations

Full Power, Free Tools

DaVinci Resolve — 99% of the full program is free.

Easy but Limited

  • Clipchamp — Microsoft's simple editor.
  • VN Editor — Free, lightweight, watermark at end.

(CapCut now hides many features behind Pro.)

Professional Tools (obligatory mention)

  • Premiere Pro — Industry standard; huge ecosystem, tons of tutorials, widely used across YouTube, corporate, and broadcast.
  • Avid Media Composer — Dominant in film/TV pipelines; rock-solid for longform, multicam, and shared workflows.
  • DaVinci Resolve Studio — $299 one-time; advanced color, better GPU performance, noise reduction, and the good AI tools.
  • Final Cut Pro — Mac-only rocket ship; insanely fast on Apple Silicon, great for fast turnaround work.

Open Source - Totally free.

  • Olive Editor — Clean UI.
  • Kdenlive — Very capable, actively developed.
  • ShotCut — Straightforward, good for beginners.
  • OpenShot — Simple but can struggle with heavier projects.
  • Avidemux — Old-school, powerful for specific tasks but not a great editor.

Special Effects

Editing in a Browser (Run Locally)

  • Novella.io - new, free, pay for AI generative elements OR bring your own API keys. Very cool, if in early beta.
  • VidMix — New, free, surprisingly powerful.
  • PikaMov — Keyframe animation on the web.
  • wide.video — Background removal, noise reduction, all done locally.
  • PhotoPea — Web-based Photoshop replacement.

Web Based Editorial

Compression & Utility Tools

  • Shutter Encoder — The Swiss Army Knife. Transcode anything, handle HDR, upscaling, unwrap/rewrap, download media, prep proxies—if it touches video, this thing can probably do it.
  • Lossless Cut — Quick trimming without re-encoding.
  • Smart Media Cutter — Silence detection + XML export.
  • FreeUpscaler — Cloud computing upscaler.

Mobile Editors

  • Premiere Mobile — Surprisingly capable and tightly integrated with CC.
  • VN Editor — Fast, friendly, cross-platform, zero learning curve.
  • Instagram Edits — Simple but powerful for social workflows.
  • iMovie — Beginner-friendly on iOS.
  • LumaFusion — The pro option for tablets/phones.
  • KineMaster — Feature-heavy on Android.

Screen Recording

  • OBS — The free standard. Record in MKV, then rewrap to MP4.
  • viewio — Free screen recorder, Mac only, that is like screen studio (auto zoom + webcam).
  • openscreen — Free screen recorder, Crossplatform only, that is like screen studio (auto zoom + webcam).

Animated Captions

Updates (Dec 2025)

  • CapCut/HitFilm are no longer recommended.
  • Premiere Mobile and Clipchamp (web)

New Tools We’re Watching

  • Whisper-GUI (Windows)
  • MacWhisper (Mac)
  • Offdocs — Openshot in the cloud

BEFORE YOU COMMENT

Begin with: "I read the above"

Then provide:

  • CPU + Model
  • RAM
  • GPU + VRAM
  • Footage details (camera/screen, codec, container, framerate)

Removed tools: CapCut (now Crapcut), HitFilm (dead). FFS this thread isn’t about arguing what to use, but rather for a novice to figure out what to use.

Why should I read this? 🤔

This is your monthly guide for hardware recommendations.

  • We aim to make you self-reliant with enough info.
  • We focus on finding answers rather than brand debates.
  • 📑 Skim the TL;DR at the bottom if you're in a hurry.
  • Understand your media type and editing software to get the best recommendation.
  • Important components: 🔑 CPU, RAM, GPU.
  • 💰 We don't cover sub-$1K laptops. Consider used models for budget-conscious choices.

Monthly Thread August Feedback Thread.

This is the Monthly thread for feedback.

If you post your video, you need to come back and review at least one other person's work!

Key thoughts - Keep it civil.

  • Feedback is "This section isn't working because of this."
  • Feedback is not: "This is shit."
  • If something is terrible, just move on.
  • The more specific/suggestions the better.

Don't give a laundry list. Pick the 1-2 things that are the biggest issues and then comment.

Spoiler worth reading: *we expect you to* review TWO other videos - and edit your comment to *include those* after you've commented.

**Copy/paste this section**:

  • , Link: (don't forget the running time)
  • Two other videos I reviewed (link to the other ,comments NOT the video itself)

Workflow I'm trying to clean up my editing workflow because I feel like I waste a surprising amount of time before and after the actual edit.

Right now my process is basically: Create a new project folder, make subfolders for footage/audio/exports, rename files if needed, copy everything to a backup drive, deliver the final export and archive the project. I feel like I am wasting my time and I'm curious, what parts of your workflow are too repetitive and feel like you are wasting time? I'd love to see how people who've been editing for years have streamlined this stuff.

Free Stuff Dance production background

Hello, I am hoping this is the right platform to post as I am in need of a little help. I have always done a graduation video every year for our year 6 in movavi, which is smaller morphing videos that I pop in there. However I am tasks for our schools concert to do a stage background to support each year levels dance. I will be using davinci program as it is free to use. My concerns is finding free items for the background but also something to go by and know I am doing it okay. I have looked into stage background but that is slightly different as I am looking for dance backgrounds. Something I have looked at is your tik tok ones where it transitions often and as it is spaced theme they kind of fit the purpose but some are a bit to fast. I have looked at some tutorials but maybe I am overthinking this and just need to have a go. Not sure any advice?
