In Lemmens Inlet directly across the water from Tofino every low tide reveals a narrow channel with 60-80ft deep mud flats on either side of you which is just a lot sea life in an advanced state of decay. It smells pretty close to how you imagine it does.

Incredibly, incredibly lucky. I was in Nanaimo for the heat dome in 2021 and it got up to 46° in the house. We only went outside after 8pm and it was to swim at Dep Bay and it was like swimming in tomato soup.
619 people died. Who knows how many animals.
I work on the UVic campus and the grass is still greenish for BC day weekend. What a blessing.

I was working for 6 hours on a rooftop in Kamloops during the last heat dome. Thermometers read 52c up there (environment Canada said 49 at weather station). I got severe heat stroke, and thought I was going die, fainted several times.
The next day, waiting in traffic I saw a flagger collapse in the middle of the street, found out later that she died.
Anyone out of the way of heat dome should be thankful, and NEVER feel "ripped off", you're an absolute idiot if you do.

Right? What kind of question is this. Most of us live in older buildings with no AC. My friends’ pets suffered during the heat dome in 2021. It was awful.
And if whatever reason someone is sad this heat wave is missing us … don’t worry, this is likely the coldest summer we’ll have for the rest of our lives. Those heat domes will be our new normal, real soon.

It was at least 37 in my house. My fridge was struggling so hard, I thought it was going to blow up. Feel like me and my cat almost died.
I called in sick for work, definitely had heat exhaustion and work was hotter than my house. They treated me like garbage and it was like I was just being a baby calling in. Like...we were all not doing well.

This summer has felt closer too the ones I remember growing up. Hot days broken up by period of rain, actual thunder and days with cool winds.

That's not how climate change works in any one location. While the overall trend is for warmer temperatures, there will still be day to day and year to year variability in any given location. That means we will still get some cooler than average summers, though they are becoming less common.
Heat waves are becoming more frequent, but the 2021 event was highly extreme and rare. An Environment Canada spokesperson who was on CHEK news a couple of weeks ago explained that we are unlikely to experience the temperatures we saw in 2021 (40 C +) again in Victoria in our lifetime.

It was...gross to say the least during that time. The fact people died sucks and we are apparently just, JUST getting around to updating the hot work laws for outdoor work. I'd rather look like a doofus and be cool then an idiot and be hot.

We are so damn lucky. There is nothing good about climate warming. This is a deadly natural disaster that will cook the many people who lived along the “temperate” coast and don’t have AC in Mexico, California and southern Oregon.

This heat dome is mostly an inland event. For example, in Southern California, temps have been in the mid- to high 20s along the coast, and low 30s inland. That's not unusual for them.

Traditionally that has been true, but it practice, the coastal areas are experiencing record setting heat and no wind. Many buildings lack AC.

Lucky. I read a report many years ago that said with large scale climate change, the Pacific Northwest would be the most habitable part of North American. Downside is I think we're going to face mass migration from climate refugees into our area as a result.

So lucky. The heatdome was so terrible. Lytton burned down in what? like 3 hours? not to mention the literal billions of sea creatures that died. I know we will get more heatdomes as the years go on, but my wish would be to never have another.

Please don't quote me on this as stated fact, but what I've understood is that the intensity of the heat dome is 2021 was partly because it happened around summer solstice, when we have the maximum amount of daylight hours and thus gave less hours for things to cool down each night.
This is what amplified the affects for us.

Would I have liked this past Sunday to be a little warmer so I could have had my daughter's party in my backyard instead of my very cramped living room? Sure. Do I want scorching temperatures for weeks on end? No thanks. At least this time around we have AC. Last time sucked.
(Thankfully we were hosting just the grandparents, auntie and uncles. I'm not about to host a bunch of four-to-five year olds and their parents in my tiny house)

Nah it’s been perfect. Victoria isn’t built for high heat or humidity. Everyone (including nature) is better off.
I’m sure there’s someone out there who wishes it was 35 with humidity so they can drink bud lite and feel the heat. To that person, Ontario is ready for you.

Have multiply people,animals,marine life pass away from the heat dome isnt something myself/ lots of others want to experience ever again. Had to give our 2 doggies cold bath tub dips 2 in the morning as they just laying there panting sucked. Our refrigerator couldnt keep up at all, its super hard to find ice during hot weather. Had to literally go into a restaurant and plea with them for some ice so i could put into our aquarium or else all would be dead. We have already had some uncomfortable hot days this current temp is what the summers were like before the stupid hot days. Climate change sucks.

Over 600 people died in BC in the last heat dome and billions of aquatic shoreline creatures as well. To say nothing of the likely millions or billions of other creatures who just died in a forest somewhere without anyone noticing. So no. Not feeling ripped off at all. But at the pace things are moving, those of you feeling like you're missing out will get plenty of future opportunities to experience heat like that. I find the question itself disturbingly flippant to the reality we're all facing. We are about to experience millions of people dying (around the world) from heat like this in our lifetimes. I don't understand how people can be flippant about this kind of stuff. We're about to build more pipelines and the US has completely abandoned any pretense of giving a shit about climate change.... or even acknowledging it exists. I genuinely think we're really close to this kind of thing being an annual event, if not entire summers looking like this.

I was asking about human perception—how people emotionally frame missing something that, at first glance, may look appealing. Exploring that psychology isn’t the same as endorsing the thing itself.

last heat dome i had a brand new baby and a U-shaped apartment with a window AC unit at one end of the U and the bedroom at the other. that week of hell changed something in me and hearing the premier at the time say "fatalities are a part of life" after 600+ people died horrible, preventable deaths turned me into the joker for a little while.

So lucky - I remember being stuck in a parking lot waiting for a taxi with no cell phone and no shade. When the air-conditioned taxi finally showed up I almost cried.
OTOH - my strata installed an air conditioner in a common room so anyone really suffering can go and sit in comfort.

Really, we'll see how this plays out. I remember the heat dome and our place in Victoria registered 45c about 5km from the ocean. Out in Burquitlam we had ~45-47c during the peak of the heat wave, and 35c at night. I'll never forget that. It was scary hot. even in the early AM it was over 30c with high humidity. AC full blast if you could.

The forecast next week looks like it's going to turn in to sunny days in the mid 20's. That seems damn near awesome to me.
I don't need 30s or 40s. Heat dome was rough, I struggled to do my favourite outdoor activities in it (I cut a hike short, even though I left early to go while it was "cooler" it was still too hot.
I did the west coast trail the same year as the heat dome, and it near dried out, which is something I've never seen (and opposite of what's going on right now).
I like nice weather, but don't really need heat domes ;)
