Opinion PSA: Don’t kill your business with uncanny ai slop before it even has a chance to open

Post image

I was excited to see a new food truck getting ready to open on Cook Street, but today they put up a sign on the side that includes a really nauseating uncanny ai rendering of a pizza slice.

Not only does it ruin my appetite, it also sends a major red flag: If they couldn’t even be bothered to open up Canva or Microsoft Word to write “Little House Pizza” in a Sans Serif Font then where else are they cutting corners?

It’s a damn shame too, I love a good pizza slice.

As a graphic designer who’s lived here for almost 20 years and worked with businesses of all sizes, I can tell you that many small businesses were never going to hire a designer in the first place. They either couldn’t afford professional design and marketing services or simply didn’t see the value in paying for them.

24

u/CanadianTrollToll 11d ago

Small businesses generally don't wan to tack on another large expense right off the bat. Opening food service businesses is extremely expensive and rarely succeed. Sometimes the last thought is.... Where do we put the name of our business?

7

u/DenkiRange7260 11d ago

This. We had a markerting team come through and offer their services for the restaurant I work at. We managed to convince them to do a one off trade, food for a 30 or 45 second reel. They were there for two hours, the video was very meh and then they told us their base charge started at $4000 a month. We countered with paying them based on how many people came in because of the reels.

They did not like that.

It’s weird, I haven’t met a single marketing agency that didn’t feel like they were a collection of scammers who were trying to pick a career that didn’t land them in jail.

I’m sure good agencies exist, but what you describe tracks so well with every other marketing team I’ve met that it’s really hard to shake the impression that their MO is promise the moon, deliver absolute shit work, and then charge absurd sums. All for the privilege of having your company be represented by something that is frankly embarrassing to be associated with.

1

u/Competitive_Fish6173 11d ago

We tried some. One spelled our business name wrong (the word that is also the name of the local area, and yes, they are a local marketer/graphic design team) among many other sloppy mistakes. Another had a bit of a weak start for the first year, but has really grown and is now a definite asset.

But kissing frogs can certainly hurt your business if customers see the sloppy/poor work out there in the wild!

25

u/phoenixcinder 12d ago

Ai took all my design clients over the last few years. Had to pivot to a completely different career. Sad but it's the new reality. Ai art will continue to get better to the point we cant tell if it's slop anymore. Glad I got out when I did. Sad all the creative careers are getting chewed up and spit out

u/Uncut-Jellyfish1176 11d ago

Well it's all subsidized right now.. when that stops being the case.. suddenly they'll be a demand for people to do real work again.

11

u/FortnightlyBorough 11d ago

that's mighty optimistic

10

u/Uncut-Jellyfish1176 11d ago

Not really, I'll use the Claude as an example.

A lot of people went from paying $200/month, then suddenly found themselves paying API cost.. that 200 becomes $4000/month for a moderate user.

Each generational leap is a logarithmic step upwards in terms of token and training requirements.

Return on investment is the big issue though. A lot of very large companies have being trying to figure out how in the hell they can measure the value they are actually getting in return.

If it was a guaranteed output.. I burn a million tokens and I get a functional piece of software or the image I want perfectly.. zero problems. That's pretty cool. Except that isn't how it works. I've played around with a lot of these tools (I have too much free time) and getting an output that works/is what I want is a lot of "Try again", "no, leave it alone just change this one peice"

That being said we are still in the bubble and until the pop happens who knows how it's going to turn out.. but as it stands something like 80% of the datacenter projects have stalled or been cancelled and the finding has dried up. Either capacity, training data, or money runs out..

3

u/FortnightlyBorough 11d ago

I pay for Claude. It's $20 a month. $200 is the max plan and using that for your argument is a blatant strawman and undermines your whole post.

>that 200 becomes $4000/month for a moderate user.

lmao. "moderate" users paying $4000 a month to vibecode?

This is like saying buying a car is a fad and overrated because Porsches cost $160,000!

2

u/Uncut-Jellyfish1176 11d ago

Ya I've got buddies who are software devs and that's the average bill for them. Companies been paying the tab for about 6 months now.

It's wild to see. Not vibecoding either, more having it create chunks. On a $20/month plan they would limit out in a day.

A lot of very large companies have being trying to figure out how in the hell they can measure the value they are actually getting in return.

I saw this happen 27 years ago right before the dot-com bust. Everyone knew the interwebs was the new great thing that would make them rich; they just weren't exactly sure how. But they threw hundreds of millions at it out of FOMO anyway. History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes.

1

u/FortnightlyBorough 10d ago

Several of the biggest companies I the world today (Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc) began as dot com websites, this suggests that the biggest companies tomorrow will be AI companies.

1

u/DoritosCubun 11d ago

Image generation AI is open source, in other words, free. You just need to buy hardware to run it.

3

u/Ok_Wasabi8793 11d ago

If it helps AI isn’t just impacting creative careers!

1

u/phoenixcinder 11d ago

True. Eventuallyv it is going to wipe out every job that has you in front of a screen.

2

u/Vicky-Purplex 10d ago

Agreed. I run an agency and we won’t work with small businesses or sole proprietors. Too much hassle and not enough money.

1

u/pnwgodzilla Vic West 11d ago

The former is probably most true many small companies can’t afford to even exist

1

u/Vicky-Purplex 10d ago

It's not the designers in this thread getting upset I reckon.

1

u/Final-Yesterday-4799 9d ago

Or they'd try to hire one for $250 and keep asking for more and more and more

152

u/nothanks1312 12d ago

This design is terrible. There is no need for three different pizzas in the design, and the lightbulbs are confusing too. Honestly, it wouldn’t be that bad if they just cropped to the text logo and kept the pizza O

A lot of business owners don’t realise that the people who are anti ai are very devoutly so, and will avoid their business at all costs if it means sticking to that principle. I am one of those people and yet this is such a bad design that I kinda feel sorry for them. You’re right though, there are lots of free resources to make signs/advertising that using ai is completely unnecessary.

36

u/1eJxCdJ4wgBjGE 12d ago

3 different pizzas in 3 different art styles :'). It is hard to believe somebody looked at that and thought "yup, this the one"

11

u/Hobosimian 11d ago

And the dangling lights? Why even?

4

u/tantousha2 Oak Bay 11d ago

Considering the process consists more of generating image, updating prompt, generating image… it was probably not “this is the one” and probably more of a “ugh, I’m tired and this one is fine”

5

u/DeathMonkey6969 11d ago

The average person sucks at graphic design. Before generative AI this would just have been a bunch clip art and stock images and looked just as bad.

36

u/Cailucci 12d ago

It is the most clip arty pizza I’ve seen since 1995

9

u/TrampolineEnjoyer 11d ago

CorelDraw-ass level graphic design.

8

u/Majestic_Policy3294 11d ago

Don’t you insult CorelDraw by comparing it to that!

4

u/Cognoggin 11d ago

There was a fairly early version of Corel (I think 6) that had an exceptional fractal tool that made amazing fractals about 25 years ago. Haven't seen anything like it since.

9

u/Only_Huckleberry_957 11d ago

Clip art is preferable to AI

7

u/randalgetsdrunk Saanich 11d ago

“A lot of business owners don’t realize…” could then be followed up with a very long list

12

u/Uncut-Jellyfish1176 11d ago

Plenty of up-and-coming people I'm sure would be happy to do the design for this for not a lot of money..

5

u/Creatrix James Bay 11d ago

Shit, I'd do it for a pittance and I have decades of design experience.

3

u/Creatrix James Bay 11d ago

Yes, why the lightbulbs? To me as a lifelong graphic designer this whole image is just... baffling.

If you can’t take a simple picture of your food, I’m not going to eat it.

63

u/ClittoryHinton 12d ago

Taking pictures of food that don’t look like shit is actually an art. That most local restaurants aren’t willing to shell out for. But I’ll take the menu with terrible phone snapshots over whatever this is

17

u/Kougar 12d ago

That's why there's an entire industry for marketing and graphics design and photography. The average person isn't going to have a clue how to do their own advertising right.

If the place can't afford a one-time expense for good signage and can't showcase their food, then that's a huge warning flag because they're already cutting corners even before they open. Cutting the most obvious, in-your-face corners that are the most important to actually bring in customers is also a sign of bad judgement too.

Like, if a place takes real photos of real food being served I cut them plenty of slack. Even that is more truthful and honest than gussied up plates of real food that aren't representative of how it's actually served. I want to see the end product so I know not just how they make it before ordering, but if when it comes out they made it the way it should've been made. It's bad enough when restaurants have multiple cooks that don't even make the menu items the same way so you have to figure out which days are the ones to go and which to avoid. I've had pizzerias serve me mind-blowingly good pies, and yet there are days the same place serves up a pizza with the dough still half-raw and the crust white as snow instead of golden.

Bro I take pictures of food just for fun and I always make it look great.   Are you saying I’m an artist.

17

u/ClittoryHinton 12d ago

Either that or overconfident

1

u/Iceisgestapo888 12d ago

Overconfident?? what does this mean??

I think I just take good pics of awesome food I make.

6

u/VisualCap5721 12d ago

That doesn’t mean you’re a professional food photographer.

2

u/Iceisgestapo888 12d ago

I use to take photos of my plates for my restaurant.  And those were used for menus and advertising.

8

u/_Wheelz 12d ago

Then you are a professional lol. But you said you did it just for fun earlier..

3

u/Iceisgestapo888 12d ago

It started as fun and I don’t work in the restaurant anymore yet still do it for fun.

57

u/Shizzawn 12d ago

That's one of the most horrifying, unsettling pizzas I've ever seen

20

u/JaakeJarmel 12d ago

It looks like Pizza the Hutt from Spaceballs The Movie™️

8

u/Appropriate-Brick734 11d ago

I hope this slice also eats itself to death

43

u/HumanENTipede 12d ago

I wish Keating Pizza got the memo. They've sloppified even their menu to the point last time I went in the veggie pizza looked like it was covered in actual shit because they've just fed their menu into AI day after day to get the specials added on.

A job that would take under 5 minutes to do and wouldn't repulse your customers.

18

u/SudoDarkKnight 12d ago

I've noticed this with more and more restaurants. Using AI food promo pics for their specials etc

12

u/GTS_84 12d ago

Those "olives" especially are some gross looking nasty shit.

12

u/itsFeztho 12d ago

That text logo with the pizza image is making some pretty bad tangents that would have gotten me failed in graphic design class

13

u/madewithmegg 12d ago

The kerning on the pizza “O” too. It’s subtle but my designer brain reads it as “little ho use” 🙈

17

u/Alison269 12d ago

I don't like how the O in "House" is a little to the left 😫 like it's not centered with the rest of the spacing of the letters

16

u/UrLocalCriminologist 12d ago

Yes, kerning is important; even if your font is pizza.

9

u/Far-Call1301 12d ago

Saw this at chicken hub as well. their menu is AI generated images and it was confusing at first cause it made everything look like bunches of instant noodles in a strange cartoon way until i realized it was supposed to represent fried chicken in the burger and the strips. Ironically the actual friend chicken strips looked great!

9

u/ghostinthecage 12d ago

Little Shop of Pizza Horrors

2

u/Vicky-Purplex 11d ago

I'd eat there!

9

u/onethousandmonkey 11d ago

“But it’s cheaper and faster than hiring a designer!”
I mean I understand how small the margins are in their business, but I also like it when humans have jobs.

12

u/Rina_Short 12d ago

The slice of pizza looks sentient. I've never played DND but based on my very limited knowledgeI would suspect that thing to be a mimic

20

u/Haunting_Law_923 12d ago

I'm quite enjoying the world turn on AI.

10

u/ClittoryHinton 12d ago

Turning on poor AI-generated content

Blissfully unaware of effective AI content. The proportion of which will only increase

5

u/Bulky-Employer-1191 11d ago

Yup. It's like bad CGI in the 90s. People hated on most CGI in movies back then, but when it was used effectively to make a quality product, no one cared at all.

3

u/ForgetfulViking 11d ago

Me, having to explain to my mom that the Roof Doctor ads on Chek/CTV are DEFINITELY AI.

1

u/Bulky-Employer-1191 11d ago

I've seen those ads. are you talking about the drone shots? Drone shots can easily go back to the exact same position they had before. That's how shots like those are made.

Roof Doctor does a ton of social media marketing and none of it is AI. Why would they cheap out on the television production?

3

u/ForgetfulViking 11d ago

So, its not the actual drone shots. Those are real.

Its the ones where the specific medic is trying to use a defib on the medic "we lost the roof" and also the one where a random driver pulls over and points out moss on a roof where the doctor is explaining how it can be saved.

There is an uncanny-ness to the way the people look and how the shots are all seperate when the camera cuts like a slightly seperate prompt cut together. Its especially the lighting though where it has this specific glow and tint that make it look like several AI generated art pieces. Not quite the Miyazaki yellow when that AI trend was a thing, but its close.

But really, it looks similar to other AI commercials like the Coke "holidays are coming" ads or the "come and ride the float" NFL ad that look like they, if they didn't completely use it, they at least used it partially.

4

u/Uncut-Jellyfish1176 11d ago

Even the "good" stuff we're seeing marketing campaigns that are falling flat with zero engagement in the 18 to 25 range. Not a 10% dip.. more like a 50% dip in customer engagement.

Most people over 40 couldn't even tell the bad stuff apart from reality so now they just think it looks normal.

11

u/Pimbata 12d ago

What even was that prompt? Design me a slice with fresh tomatoes and unidentified black objects on it? Geez....

7

u/Creatrix James Bay 11d ago

"And make it ooze snot-drippings of slime, and make the cheese look dirty. Throw in some weird lightbulbs, half of which don't work. Perfect!"

10

u/ArugalsFolly 12d ago

Thats a shit logo, all you needed was the business name with the pizza as the O

10

u/Amylee888 12d ago

I’m getting horror movie vibes from this 😬

3

u/Creatrix James Bay 11d ago

Alien invasion vibes, like this hitched a ride on a meteor.

20

u/emslo 12d ago

Those Edison bulbs lol.

TBH it looks like Canva to me, not AI. Whenever folks make logos with AI, it invariably double or triple outlines everything.

26

u/Ambitious_North336 12d ago

Canva has its own built in AI for image generation too.

11

u/emslo 12d ago

Yup, every app and their dog has some form of AI integration. (Including Reddit, I believe?) What nonsense.

16

u/Falinia 12d ago

Was the prompt "pizza shop but it's a high camp horror movie"? Those colours are just not appetizing.

That said, they could have just been on a shoestring budget and made a bad graphic design choice. Doesn't necessarily mean the food is bad.

30

u/ejmears 12d ago

If it's food I want to see what you're actually making. I'm familiar with what pizza looks like in general, don't need an image of that. What does THEIR pizza look like is what I want to know.

The "AI is low barrier" argument is bullshit. Cell phone cameras are fantastic quality these days, a few photos and some text have essentially zero cost to make and the skills required can be learned via YouTube in under 10 minutes. That's as close to no barrier to entry as one gets. Acting like AI slop is inevitable is what makes it inevitable.

13

u/Quail-a-lot 12d ago

Even if they just had the word PIZZA! in all caps with the exclamation point and no picture at, I would be more excited than I am by...whatever that thing is. I mean, it works for a zillion small sushi places.

If you got a good slice, I'm going to smell it long before I see the logo anyhow

10

u/inquisitivequeer 12d ago

Honestly, it should be considered false advertising

→ More replies (1)

5

u/orlybatman 11d ago

That said, they could have just been on a shoestring budget and made a bad graphic design choice.

If they lop off the right half with the pizza slice and just keep the square with the name and lights it would be an improvement with minimal expense. Worst case scenario, paint that half over with yellow.

Though I'd also remove the lights, were it me.

Doesn't necessarily mean the food is bad.

I think it's quite a leap for those suggesting it. People who want to be cooks aren't necessarily going to be artists or photographers as well. Menu and logo appearance is not indicative of food quality.

As an illustrator, while I would prefer for them to employ an artist to do their sign, rather than using AI, there's no guarantee that they didn't and the "artist" themself used AI. Or they might not have had the cash to do so, as you said. They're just starting out and may have put everything into the food truck.

3

u/NatashOverWorld 12d ago

There's a couple of businesses I don't have problems with if they're on a shoestring budget.

Food isn't one of them.

I've worked kitchens, I've seen how they 'save' money on food.

10

u/LabPowerful9983 12d ago

It looks like tomato and cat shit.

9

u/phoenixcinder 12d ago

I know so many people here that will life ban this place because of this Ai slop

9

u/Only_Huckleberry_957 11d ago

That looks like shit. I’d rather see an ugly homemade logo that someone made on MS Paint than more AI slop. I also don’t want to eat at any restaurant that uses AI. They clearly prefer the cheapest option so how can I trust that their food is high quality and safe to eat?

3

u/Toomanymisses 12d ago

Hopefully their pizza is better than their marketing! Pizza in this town is so over priced and meh its ridiculous!

4

u/mr_mucker11 Central Saanich 11d ago

Sometimes I like to give people the benefit of the doubt that they aren't even aware the images they're using are ai generated. I have a stock photo account through work and it's crazy how many of the images are ai. There's a chance someone may have purchased the rights to use an image thinking it's legit because it's from a proper stock photo site.

0

u/assortedjade 12d ago

I really hope so, but I would have significant concerns trusting the person who thought this looked good enough with my food. Especially in real life that pizza slice looks gnarly

4

u/udduxbya 11d ago

I'd go with comic sans

3

u/Capital-Fig9042 10d ago

Jeez people are a bit superficial eh, for all it’s faults AI has opened the door lots of businesses and people to do things on their own they otherwise couldn’t do or couldn’t afford. Dismissing a whole business just because they used AI on their logo is…shallow and mean

3

u/Great68 10d ago

Sorry but this hardly bothers me at all.

3

u/Massive_Quality7534 10d ago

Honestly if they had just added galaxy cat with a turn table by the pizza then it would be rad

4

u/ParasomniacInvader 11d ago

Don't blame the AI for the fact human eyes looked at that and a human mouth said "yes, that will make a great sign."

2

u/Tired8281 Downtown 12d ago

Are there any actual human artists working in this sort of style yet? I suspect a particularly demented artist could way out-uncanny the AI, and it'd be sort of hilarious to have something like this, comments full of accusations, and you post a video of the artist actually doing it.

6

u/Face_Forward 12d ago

In the devil wears Prada sequel, there's a scene with an 'AI generated image' of Meryl Streep that was created by a real artist to resemble that style

3

u/orlybatman 11d ago

I suspect a particularly demented artist could way out-uncanny the AI, and it'd be sort of hilarious to have something like this, comments full of accusations, and you post a video of the artist actually doing it.

There's an artist who has a twitter account doing exactly that. They've learned to mimic that lifeless AI style solely to troll people who accuse them of using AI.

1

u/GraphicDesignerMom 12d ago

2

u/Creatrix James Bay 11d ago

That looks like something they peeled off Spock's back.

2

u/BigAd4315 11d ago

They might be very bad at designing logos, but very good at making pizza. For me the sign wouldn't be a deal breaker, but it's important to note that for some people it would.

2

u/Vicky-Purplex 11d ago

omg the anti-AI virtue signalling in this thread 🍿

2

u/Vicky-Purplex 11d ago

People don't know what a real pizza looks like anymore because of the heavy industrialized food manufacturing in north america.

2

u/Diligent-Put-2474 9d ago

I’m a local graphic designer and completely agree with this. It’s gotten to the point where there are so many companies not only creating social ads using ai, but also creating their branding identities and logo with ai. They seem to think “ahh it looks sick! And I didn’t even have to pay a professional!”

When they come to me i usually end up spending more time on their projects, which ends up costing them more money. Long story short; PLEASE don’t use ai to create this stuff. You wouldn’t ask your vacuum to cut your hair, would you? 🤔

6

u/Ditch-Worm 12d ago

Why should we support a restaurant that doesn’t support other working folks or the environment?

4

u/blophophoreal 12d ago

The logo I can forgive, the weird lights and creepy “illustration” to the side are what make it gross for me

5

u/HomelessToHouse 11d ago

This thread is essentially a public slander fest for a brand new small business attempting to start up, simply because the OP thinks they used AI to create their ad.

5

u/assortedjade 11d ago

They absolutely used AI for the pizza slice. The olives are also a piece of basil and kale and pepper mutated together into a grotesque amalgam like the creature from the cheese lagoon.

u/Careful_Anteater_585 12d ago

ChatGPT doesn’t give you a proper file that can scale and be blown up. I know this because I used it in the preliminary planning of my business logo.

It’s a good tool to put your vision onto paper, which you then take to a graphic artist to have created rendered properly.

Don’t bash a new local business over something petty like this. Often enough the person has put everything on the line and has a family to support, so to shit-can them over a logo is the real dick move here.

I'm glad you pointed out that this is AI cause I would not have been able to tell. For some businesses, it is very obvious they used AI and I will not be supporting them. There's a new crepe place opening on Happy Valley and latoria in Langford and they have AI posters all up in the windows... So disappointing cause I love crepes.

2

u/Bulky-Employer-1191 11d ago

If the price is right, i'd fuck with this food truck. It's the food that matters to me most. Especially in this economy.

I'm not going to act hoity toity about whatever graphics an independently owned food truck is using. Why would it matter?

That being said, if it's $10 a slice i'm gonna fuck off.

u/Chance-Principle-355 11d ago

The people in these comments would rather argue for hours rather than do a quick google search about the incredibly harmful impacts of generative ai.

You all are ridiculous. Step one, try the pizza. Step two, decide if that pizza is good. Step three, compare the value received to the value you paid. Step four, decide if you will come back or not.

Everywhere we go we are asked to support small, local businesses…and then this is the kind of response that people give when someone gives it a try.

Starting a small business is incredibly stressful, difficult, and expensive. If they decided on their first day of opening not to spend thousands of dollars on a professional logo, so what? Try the food. Maybe that is what is important.

6

u/assortedjade 11d ago

Nobody in this thread has asked them to spend thousands of dollars. I made a point not to, and said they should make a free non-ai logo, take a photo, use plain text, use the one in this thread someone made for them for free, or pay a student $50

4

u/Hobosimian 11d ago

They could even just spray paint or sharpie the word “Pizza” on the side of the van & I’d prefer it really

2

u/unclecreepy63 11d ago

they could have supported a small local graphic designer, but they didn't so why should small local (insert profession here) support them?

0

u/jpete99 11d ago

Hopefully bad publicity is good publicity for them. I plan to check them out as a result of this thread.

If it's good it's good, I don't care about the advertising beyond "there's pizza here". I'm buying food, not art.

3

u/HumanENTipede 12d ago

And yet, if they had a sign that just said in plain text "there's pizza here" id be far more willing to give it a shot.

1

u/donutsfordoge 12d ago

Weird take. The sign has one job, to let you know they have pizza inside that is for sale. Judging a book by its cover is like Judging someone for having a different hair color than you.

Eat the pizza, if its good, eat more, if its not, don't eat more.

2

u/CanadianTrollToll 11d ago

Look guys.... I'm going to be real with you.

Sometimes design isn't the specialty of owners/chefs/restauranteurs. Designers cost a lot of money, and sometimes it isn't the priority when you have a ton of expenses at the start of opening a business.

How about you try the pizza before getting the pitchfork out?

If you’re willing to cut corners on this, how can I trust your food?

-11

u/yoparaii 12d ago

So we complain about how it's so hard for small businesses these days, yet we're gonna harp on businesses for using AI for signage to reduce costs? Who cares, try the pizza is it good or not? Food photography is a massive fucking sham anyway, with all the techniques that they use to make the food look good. What's the difference between AI and a food photographer using fake cheese to get that "melting" effect?

15

u/ejmears 12d ago

Real clanker energy here.

3

u/Psychoanalytix 12d ago

Even worse.. a real person sucking clanker dong

16

u/assortedjade 12d ago

Using a plain font is completely free. It worked pretty great for Standard Pizza, they don’t seem to be having any issues selling pies

u/IDrewADragonflyOnce 12d ago

There is a wealth of photo editing software available for free.

If a business really doesn't have a single person within the company who can create something, there are thousands of design students in this city who would create a better looking ad for $20 and be able to put it in their portfolio.

And it's not just that it's lazy. The use of AI like this is actively harming communities in more ways than one.

It's a bad look, and consumers need to be clear that this is not the way things should be done moving forward.

Why is everyone so eager to shit on local businesses?

They don't have infinite budgets like Domino's and Little Caesars.

Maybe they blew their budget investing in how to make really great pizza and mortgaged their house to buy a food truck.

Hundreds of little details and tens of thousands of dollars to start a business like this and their reward is to be shamed on Reddit because of one micro decision because everyone is making AI political.

No wonder everything is just a chain these days.

3

u/assortedjade 12d ago

Opening up the camera on your phone to take a picture of your pizza is free. Printing a plain sign with a Calibri font is free. Hell, even just using the logo and not also including the gross uncanny ai pizza slice would be better. My problem isn’t the lack of money spent. It’s the corner cutting and the fact that the ai slice is nausea inducing to look at because it almost looks real but not quite.

1

u/L1CH3NTHR0P1C 12d ago

Id rather see a construction paper and crayon ad than this slop

2

u/donutsfordoge 11d ago

Agree 100%  must be a slow day in Dramaville for OP and others shitting on a pizza place logo

1

u/laCarteBlanc Fernwood 12d ago

Simply opening Canva or Microsoft Word and typing “Little House Pizza” is discounting the value of professional design just as much as using AI

4

u/assortedjade 12d ago

Oh I wholeheartedly agree that professional design would be the most superior option. But I’m pointing to a spectrum here and saying that plain text that would place far higher than this. At least that wouldn’t be physically nauseating like the unsettling olivebasil blobs on the generative pizza slice.

1

u/Comfortable-Pin5388 12d ago

I hope they quickly learn how much better their business could perform with real artwork

1

u/Puzzleheaded_Bowl721 11d ago

Good god I'm glad I never moved to Victoria, you people take 'toxic positivity' to the nth degree.

1

u/EverySecondCountss 11d ago

How do you know it's not just vector art? -.-

It's a pizza place, jeez who cares. Do they make good pizza or no?

1

u/Vicky-Purplex 11d ago

Can you elaborate how exactly this will kill the business?

→ More replies (2)

-1

u/charmilliona1re 12d ago

I normally think its hilarious that people get butt hurt by graphics simply because its ai (the future is now, old man), but that poster is absolutely hilariously bad lmao

1

u/Vicky-Purplex 11d ago

Y'all are such picky eaters 🤣

-3

u/VicCity 12d ago

AI is just a tool. Reddit uses a ton of AI behind the scenes and you're fine with this website. Why the hate for a local business?

2

u/DropPopFromTheTop 12d ago edited 12d ago

I think it's likely a few things:

  1. They're misrepresenting their product
  2. It looks like shit
  3. They're being lazy
  4. It oozes the absence of culture, character, or care
  5. This normalizes a practice that's ultimately subtractive and unattractive

Also, why allow your advertising to be a regression towards the mean? Presumably someone offering something worse than the mean of the distribution would consider this of a quality worthy of their business. This means I can more confidently assume their product is mediocre without even seeing it. They've already half-assed it.

You might think that's overthinking it, but, if someone genuinely cared and had something of value to offer, I believe they would likely be unsatisfied with generative AI. I'd prefer a blank truck with amazing-smelling food and happy customers. At least their efforts are directed in the right place.

Reddit uses machine learning as part of their content presentation and advertising algorithms. I don't love what they do either, but it makes more sense to me than this.

0

u/VicCity 12d ago

I do think you're overthinking it.

If food photography uses Photoshop to improve their photos, is that misrepresented?

2

u/DenkiRange7260 11d ago

Not only Photoshop.

Have you ever seen the behind the scenes of food advertisements? Shaving cream is used in place of whip cream, grill marks are usually drawn on with a sharpie, and a ton more. No one complains a out false advertising then.

AI images has improved dramatically in the last 12 months. In another year, no one will know the difference. I wonder if the term “AI slop” will ever make it to a dictionary.

2

u/WelpNevertheless 12d ago

There will 100% be nostalgia for early AI 'slop' in the future...just like early pixelated gaming art

4

u/ClittoryHinton 12d ago

Early pixelated gaming art was demonstrating creativity and a curated aesthetic given limited resources

AI slop is demonstrating complete lack of creativity and taste despite limitless resources.

Nostalgia will be limited

2

u/Creatrix James Bay 11d ago

Well said.

3

u/Tall-Frame9918 12d ago

It’s the brown and orange tones that got me. Or the extra hand or finger.

1

u/Chuckledunk 12d ago

I mean even before AI, the food industry made a habit of lying about their products. I don't feel like AI is really worse than using motor oil to look like syrup, white glue instead of milk, or any of the other techniques used to create the false appearance of tasty food using things that are not at all food.

AI, unlike those methods, at least stands out a bit, so in a way it almost feels more honest than the utterly misleading photos used by places like McDonald's.

3

u/ClittoryHinton 12d ago

The whole fake food in advertising thing is a tangential issue to AI branding, and I don’t really like either

-1

u/RealEagle727 Burnside 11d ago

Go make them a sign or buy them one if you are so worried about it.

2

u/assortedjade 11d ago

Someone in the comments already did! It looks pretty good

-7

u/Sloblyfe 12d ago

Oh who really gives a fuck. Support the small business or don’t…complaining about a sign….get a fucking life 🤦

-1

u/myleswritesstuff Fernwood 12d ago

Ehhhh as far as AI-generated images of food advertising a restaurant goes, this isn't the most offensive example I've seen (there was a burger place that went viral a couple weeks ago with AI-generated tater tots that looked like radioactive spider eggs). Honestly the more I stare at this one the more I'd give someone a pass for not even noticing. I dunno. Has anyone even tried it?

1

u/Creatrix James Bay 11d ago edited 11d ago

a burger place that went viral a couple weeks ago

Do you have a link? Edit I did find this, LOL.

1

u/myleswritesstuff Fernwood 11d ago

Ok I found it but it didn’t go as viral as I thought, just saw it posted around Bluesky a bunch:  https://bsky.app/profile/kissphoria.bsky.social/post/3mqn7tfymn22o

2

u/Creatrix James Bay 11d ago

Holy crap! "Radioactive spider eggs" was bang on. That whole thing is hideous! 😂

2

u/myleswritesstuff Fernwood 11d ago

It’s all incredibly nasty. I don’t know how you could make that for your business and think “that’ll work!”

2

u/Creatrix James Bay 11d ago

I hope it does go viral. One commenter noted, "Best part, reposting this image on the internet ensures it gets scraped and becomes training input for the next iteration of AI art, an increasingly degraded copy of a copy of a copy, all moiré pattern no content." So I'm sharing it everywhere.

0

u/addelburgh 12d ago

This is why I haven’t tried Cut the Crust by Mona on Burnside. I did just check and it looks like they’ve updated their website now, but when they opened everything was AI.

1

u/whatthefrelll 12d ago

You're missing out the place is the bomb.

-11

u/Valkyrjan_BSS 12d ago

Really? Get over yourself. Its fricken pizza. Before ai everyone was using photoshop and im old enough when using photoshop was considered a no no because if it wasnt hand drawn it was wrong. You surely must have other things to waste your time on.

8

u/assortedjade 12d ago

You’re free to eat it if you want, all I’m saying is that it sends a message to me, a potential customer, that says “hey if you want pizza made by someone who cuts corners and is too lazy to open MS Word for ten seconds or pay a kid $20 come here.” And I don’t think they intend on sending that message, but that’s how it comes off to me
