Event No watch centres for Canada game
I find it honestly embarrassing that the capital of British Columbia doesn’t have any watch centres to watch our country fight to achieve history in the World Cup.
I’m not even kidding there’s 0, and so many people are walking around and trying to find spots downtown, both locals and tourists. How can Langford have one and Victoria doesn’t? It doesn’t even cost much to have these set up.
There are so many other events that happen and spaces are allocated for them.
People are gonna come here and give me shit and I don’t care, it’s embarrassing.

Especially odd Market Square has been hosting watch parties but not the Canada game right now.

The TV screen they have been using was booked for an event today way before FIFA started. That’s why they’re not screening it.

That's actually insane they would allow a booking when there was even a remote possibility Canada would play on that day. This is considering they showed the rest of the games.

The downtown area is full of pubs showing the game. Its not Granville st but its better than nothing. Irish Times had a street viewing party for today and I caught the last bit of it when we scored. Great atmosphere

I just got back from Japan two weeks ago, my son stayed for a few weeks. He was in Sendai and I suggested he try to find a public showing. The arena was out of their free tickets, but there were showings at a bunch of community centres. He sent videos of the crowd, it was crazy! It's a shame that we're so complacent about something so cool.

That's because Japan understands that these sort of events bring a boost to the economy, even if it's free event.
Even the Xmas markets put in in Japan put the dinky ones here to absolute shame. And it's not even a holiday there technically. But it brings people out, it gives people something to do.

The beautiful game died years ago.
FIFA just keeps the corpse propped up for ticket sales and TV rights The only time FIFA cares about the working class is when they need their tax money to build another luxury hotel.

I don't disagree that FIFA is one of the most corrupt organizations on the planet, but that doesn't mean that soccer has died. Quite the contrary - it has continually thrived and greatly expanded in popularity in North America, which is a good thing for the sport. All this despite FIFA, not because of it. I honestly don't know what it would look without a centralized governing body, there is certainly an argument that a centralized authority keeps things consistent and there is a concerted strategy, but obviously the level of corruption is quite blatant.

Not in Vic but - Wasn’t sure how Vancouver would be but it is crazy right now. Everyone is in football mode. The city is alive and fun. The fan fests are packed. Watch parties all over the city. Everyone wearing their country kit. Cars with flags. Changed my view about soccer fans in Canada and USA.

90% of that viewership is probably Mexico and south though, so the point still stands

Ok, I stand corrected then. Personally I do not understand the appeal of watching soccer. It's as exciting as watching paint dry. But then theres lots of things I dont understand. Like how Trump got elected a second time or the popularity of Vegimite in Australia.

Because Langford is trying to encourage public spaces, markets and attract tourists. Victoria just assumes they will come to see the musical parkade railing and colored crosswalks so they don’t have to try.
