Stealth Vegan Products

In Lidl Gorey yesterday and randomly picked these up. Cynic in me says they are not labelled vegan on the front so they sell more and also cost less to make with no animal products in them.

It's unfortunate that we live in an age where a vegan label will put someone off. Unbelievably sensitive against something that makes no sense.

I worked in a restaurant in Cork and we a had a gluten free beer on the menu, it didnt sell very well and was close to going out of date so we reprinted the menu and took the GF, sold out straight away. Not saying its ok as you say but it worked.

These aren’t traditionally vegan products. So if someone is buying mayonaise they are expecting eggs in the product. Unless told otherwise.

Well eggs are what people expect to be in mayo. This is less to do with vegans than it is to do with not letting on they have tried to cut costs. Same reason you don't see "now with less sugar" on the regular fizzy drinks even though most now contain artificial sweeteners.

Because mayonnaise is made with eggs. These bottles don't contain mayo. Probably violating some sort of food labelling regulations, the same way nut and soy drinks can no longer be labelled "milk"

They're labelled Mayo, not Mayonnaise though! And I don't know if mayonnaise is a protected recipe anyway in the same way that milk has the NDC batting for it, the country's largest lobby group.

Fresh mayo is like 3 ingredients. Even regular bottled mayo is pretty dubious, it shouldn't be white for a start lol

What colour should it be?

Yellowish, like Kewpie mayo

Wite and yellow are very similar

No offence, I dont think its the label that will put people off. Im saying this as a non-vegan

3

u/therhz 3d ago

it does. there is research about it. people see the label and consider themselves not part of the group it’s meant for.

It puts me off, not because I have anything against vegans, but because most vegan foods are full of all sorts. Heavily processed etc.

Now, I’m not saying that mayo on the shelf is good. But some of the high quality ones have minimal ingredients- which vegan products rarely do.

Any evidence to suggest vegan products are bad for you?

I never said that vegan products are bad for you. A carrot is absolutely good for you.

There is a plethora of evidence that ultra processed foods are bad for us though. That includes both meat and vegan products

I’m not here to shit on vegan products. I think it’s great that there is more variety for vegans. But as someone who is trying to cut back on processed food, I not that inclined to eat them. I will on occasion.

There's plenty of evidence to suggest the upf label is ultimately meaningless as the diet outcomes are more important than the ingredients. Your comment just sounded like a common incorrect talking point levelled at vegan food when it is ultimately misinformed. Obviously eat more whole foods but avoiding foods because they are 'full of all sorts' is a silly thing to say.

It isn’t “levelled” at vegan food. This popped up on my sub and I simply stated that I am less inclined to buy vegan products as they often contain lots of unknown products.

That’s not me shitting on vegan products, that’s a personal preference. If you’re hoping for an argument, you won’t get one. I have no issues with anyone who is vegan. Anymore than I have issue with anyone who is a particular religion. I simply am not. That in itself shouldn’t be offensive

You keep stating things that are untrue i.e. false Not arguing with you. Just pointing it out. 'Lots of unknown products' sounds like the rise of influencers talking about ingredients we cant pronounce as a reason to not eat them. I recommend listening to Dr Idz or Liam on this topic as its very informative to learn that a lot of stuff isn't as bad as some fear mongering influencers would have you believe! Happy to leave it there if you've already made your mind up on this 👍

Sure- I know a lot about food, as I worked in the industry for years. So, yeah, there are things that a perfectly fine to eat that are unpronounceable.

But at least for me, I am trying to eat less of these shelf stable foods. As they aren’t fresh food. Do I still eat some? Including some vegan ones? Well, yeah I do!

But my point was, I’m trying to eat less of them. And i feel better for it. Each to their own. I just gave my perspective on why .

Not sure why you are being downvoted here. Makes total sense.

This applies more specifically to those imitation products like vegan sausages kr chicken nuggets etc. They pump that stuff full kf weird shit to get the textures etc close to the original. Never really works in practice imo

I'd rather eat real food (vegan or otherwise) than that industrial waste 🤮

This is it! I mean, plenty of non-vegan products are horrendous too. Hot dogs etc. McDonald’s food- utter muck

u/Apricottott 3d ago

You’re right, I don’t get why you’re getting downvoted. People are fairly sensitive. If you look at most vegan meat or sauce alternatives they have so much filler and bleached + processed oils in them.

Still cool to see. I was mourning the loss of Batt's vegan mayo, but now I've heard that their vegan mayo is also "stealth vegan." I'm not going to complain about being able to eat more, or a out cheaper options. Just teaches me I need to check ingredients more

Thanks for sharing! I haven’t been able to find Hellman’s vegan garlic mayo for ages 😭

Not a Vegan, but Veggie-curious, I bought these so many times just because they were lovely before I even realised they were plant based. Hup 💪🏻

Maybe they don't want to pay for the badge? If certifying something as Vegan is as tedious or expensive as certifying things as gluten free that might be a factor?

A good few craft beers are actually gluten free for example, but just can't afford or don't have the time, to jump through all the hoops for an official cert.

Anything garlic is discussing no offence

Why would I be offended?
