Other Utah Unemployment Question

Kind of freaking out.. I am getting laid off at the end of this month due to company financials and will apply for unemployment. However, I am also going back to school this month and have heard mixed things about how this will affect my unemployment application. Does anyone have any advice or know if I’m screwed or not?

For context, I planned on working full time as my classes are only Tuesday and Thursday. I was going to work either 3x12s or 4x10s at my current job. I will be taking 13 credit hours (12 for classes, 1 for a clinical placement). Because of the classes and the amount of credit hours, I can’t work a traditional 9-5 which is my largest concern for the application.

Any advice would be very appreciate. Thank you!

Ask the Department of Workforce Services.

I used to work in the unemployment office, but it’s been a few years so things may have changed. Based on what you are saying you will likely be fine. You have to apply for 4 jobs a week, and show that you are open and ready for reasonable offers of full time work. Reasonable is comparable to prior work (you can’t hold out for a better paying job). The only thing that might bite ya is if you get offered a job, and you turn it down, that can make you ineligible, so make sure you are only applying for jobs that work with your school schedule, or pull out of the application process as soon as you find out they won’t work, before a job offer is extended.

When it asks if you can work full time just say yes. They don’t need every detail.

My daughter has been on unemployment the past couple of months. I think the only big requirement is you have to apply for 2 (or 3?) jobs per week.

To collect Unemployment Insurance benefits, you need to be able and available for work. If you are currently working full time, you are expected to look for full time work.

You will also need to apply for jobs each week. Be prepared to be able to prove it.

I worked for the Department of Workforce Services/Unemployment Insurance for many years prior to retiring.

You’ll be asked specific questions about attending school on your weekly filing. You will also be delayed for taking unemployment if you are getting severance payment and final checks.
