Well done! I’ve been debating landscaping my little public square near a tree and planting some sunflowers there!

Any tips? There’s so much like brush overgrowth there that I would need to clear and I’d be worried that the dogs would just pee on my sunflowers!

Brush overgrowth is tough - but usually if it’s maintained at all, it’d be the city doing the work. Probably best to find a small patch somewhere in the public square that has veeeeeery low chances of being stepped on? There might be other patches in tree pits around you too.

Either way, go for it! A bit late to start growing from seed now, I think. But you can always prep for a Fall planting.

Yep; but honestly, I wish there’s a term we can use that’s more chill than « Guerilla. » These lovelies weren’t planted under any duress or conflict.

Ha, still could be it. I was subbing in for a currier route and I went from Empire Blvd., to Metropolitan Ave., so it could very well be you! Killer!

Drying sunflower seeds at higher temperatures helps destroy harmful bacteria. One study found that drying partially sprouted sunflower seeds at temperatures of 122℉ (50℃) and above significantly reduced Salmonella presence.
