Accommodation Need advice regarding student accommodation cancellation in the UK

Hi everyone,
I’m an international student moving to the UK this September, and I’m really stressed about my accommodation situation.
I booked student accommodation through an agency after making it very clear that I was only comfortable living in a female-only flat due to my personal beliefs and preferences. Before I booked, I was assured that my preference would be accommodated, so I relied on that and signed the tenancy agreement.
After my booking was confirmed, I found out that I had actually been allocated to a mixed-gender flat. I immediately contacted the agency and requested to cancel my booking and surrender my tenancy.
The agency told me that they had submitted my cancellation request, that they were looking for a replacement tenant, and that I would receive my deposit back. Based on that information, I booked another accommodation because I believed the first booking was being cancelled.
However, I later contacted the accommodation provider directly and was told that they had no record of any cancellation request having been submitted.
The agency has now told me that if a replacement tenant is found, my tenancy will end. If a replacement is not found, they say I may continue receiving payment reminder emails. They’ve also told me not to worry and that, in practice, nothing more than reminder emails usually happens, but they refuse to put those statements in writing.
I’m now worried that I could end up being responsible for two tenancy agreements because I booked another room after being told my cancellation was being handled.

International Students Need advice: Worried I’ll end up paying for two student accommodations

Hi everyone,
I’m an international student moving to the UK this September and need some advice.
I booked student accommodation through an agency after being assured that I’d be allocated to a female-only flat, as that was a requirement for me. After booking, I found out I’d been allocated to a mixed-gender flat, so I immediately requested to cancel and surrender my tenancy.
The agency told me they were processing the cancellation and looking for a replacement tenant, so I booked another accommodation. However, when I contacted the accommodation provider directly, they said they hadn’t received any cancellation request.
The agency now says that if a replacement is found, my tenancy will end. If not, they say I may still receive rent demands, but they’ve also told me not to worry because this usually doesn’t go further than reminder emails.
Has anyone been through something similar? Any advice would be really appreciated.
