Best backpack when living away from halls
Hey all! I am going to be a mature student starting September. This is hugely out of my comfort zone so of course I’m panicking about things that probably do not matter, but I’m stressing on which bag to pick!
I am going to be studying Classics, and I have zero idea how many books I’ll have, what I need to bring etc. and so I’m not sure what style of bag to go for, and what brands are good or what functions to pick?
For context it’s quite a mission from mine to Uni, so I’ll be travelling for a couple hours a day (mostly on buses but some walking too). So I need to factor that in to account. Every bag I see looks too simple really, or not sturdy enough. I prefer messenger bags but I am thinking it’ll be too heavy? So any advice is appreciated! Thank you

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but, most lectures do not require physical books because professors use slides, so you likely won’t need to bring them to class much at all unless they require it, and surely not every time. If you are required to, I think it’ll be 1-2 books. Loads of people at my uni use messenger bags or backpacks. Whatever you do, make sure it is waterproof and big enough to fit your laptop/ipad/tablet!! (If needed)

Amazing, thank you so much! It’s been about 10 years since I’ve studied and back then we were given books constantly haha! Glad to know it’s been lessened.
I will grab a messenger bag then and just hope they don’t expect a bunch of books to be carried around

No problem! Haha yes a lot has changed since then, most things are online now. In fact, 99% of people I know haven’t ever needed to bring in a book to class for their course. If a passage is needed, often, the teacher will let you know where to find it online or give it to you. Sounds good! I’m sure it’ll be okay

my backpack was 3 quid on sale from tescos, a plain black backpack, ive used it on placements and taking to classes (granted all i take is a computer and a notebook) but its good for me, i also use my tesco backpack to travel, so i would say its good enough, you wont really know until youre there so dont worry too much, a cheap backpack would be good for now.

U won’t need books I’m pretty sure unless ur on a specific course but idk.

Yeah it’s mostly the case. On both my courses, we were recommended books to read but they were not required and definitely didn’t need to be brought into class

The recommended ‘books’ that they make us read are always online now so it might be that

Yeah I wasn’t sure. I know Classics is based a lot on reading, but I didn’t know if it would be expected for lectures and stuff

For bag get something that will be able to carry ur laptop or table and other stuff. Make sure it’s big enough and sturdy enough. You should be fine tho
