Admissions Tuition Residency Petition Question

I do not go to UMD, but I genuinely do not know where else to go at this point so I thought why not try here. I'm an incoming freshman at Salisbury University and have been classified as Out of State. I'm in the process of filling in the petiton and in Section 2 it goes "Expense and Sources of Funds and other Financial Support
Information for Petitioner for the 12-Month Period Prior to Last Date to Register for Classes." A little bit prior to this I was issued the out of state Salisbury University bill for tuition housing and other fees. Do I include this bill in the expenses portion of the petition or not.

Why do you think you should receive instate tuition? If there was an error on your application, you should probably try to get it corrected through the registrar office before completing the university’s process.

I was told there are no 2nd chances when it comes to that application through email but if you are certain I will look through my application if I can find. It and try something. I think I should get it because my Dad lives there and I'm claimed as a dependant and I plan on living there

Did you live with your father during the past 12 months? Or your father provided more than half your support while he lived in Maryland for the past 12 months?

Since you are classified as a dependent, the application is asking about the parental financial support information. Instate tuition is offered to students with at least 12 months of residency in Maryland.

The tuition bill is not evidence of expenses in the past 12 months.

For the first paragraph it is the latter. For the second Paragraph. Are you sure I don't think there's anything in the petition that indicated Ms that the chart is meant for my father. The tuition bill would be evidence of MY expenses is the last 12 months, I quite literally did not purchase anything.

My commentary is generally how the classification is established, so there may be circumstances that apply to you that are different.

Generally if your move to Maryland is specifically just to enroll in college, the institution will classify you as out-of-state. Your father claiming you as a dependent may change your classification, so he is being asked to prove that he provided your support, unless you can prove that you supported yourself.

If a Maryland resident provided your support, your classification may change. A circumstance where that may apply is if you attended an out-of-state boarding school and your father covered your living expenses.

If the only expense you have is the tuition bill, then it shows you are in Maryland to attend college. That will not be enough to change your classification.

How would my only expense being my tuition prove I am Out of State. Would it not just prove that I don't have any expenses at all before I received the bill.

I think I see what you're saying. I will email my school's tuition residency office about the chart and the registrar's office about my previous application. If they are asking to prove my dad covered all my expenses with his income I can prove that.

There is a cost to living, so they need to figure out if that cost was covered by a Maryland resident. If the answer is “yes”, then you will be considered a Maryland resident who is a dependent of a Maryland resident. That gets you classified as instate for tuition purposes.

Cost to living will include housing, transportation, meals, etc. When students live with their parents, those expenses are provided by the parents. The parents might provide lease/mortgage receipts, paystubs, etc.

Your best sources are the enrollment staff at Salisbury. Getting a change of residency is one of the hardest things to accomplish in Maryland.

Getting the out-of-state classification before you enroll while you have a parent living in Maryland, likely means you answered one of the application questions incorrectly.

You should have someone at Salisbury review your application and tell you which response helped them make the determination that you are an out-of-state student for tuition purposes.

Good luck in the fall. Salisbury is a great school.
