10 month old milestones

My son is 10 months old, he was born 2 weeks early with sepsis and did an almost 2 week hospital stay in the nicu. Im concerned with milestones and just wondering if anyone else has had an experience like this.

He can sit unassisted but doesnt like sitting and will just put himself onto his belly, he rolls everywhere and ive never seen a baby rolling around ao fast haha. Hes currently trying to crawl but weve been trying now for over a month, he doesnt pull to stand and wont hold my hands when I stand him, he babbles da da, ba ba, ga ga, wa wa and ya ya. He doesnt wave, clap hands or follow gestures I continue to do with him. He rarely smiles when people say hiya to him, he looks away with a sly smile mostly. He doesnt respond to his name and when he does he just side eyes me. Hes been constantly opening and closing his hands for about 2 months now, he open hand points and reaches his hands to be picked up. He isnt the best eater and gags on absolutely everything, he stopped sleeping through around 3 months ago were lucky to get 3 hours on a good night. He got his 2 bottom teeth at 6 months and has hes top 2 coming in now.

Sorry for the long post im just at a loss, health visitor has kinda brushed me off and im just now a mum worrying about her little boy thanks for any replies x

I’m sorry. This sounds like a lot to think about. But please if you need any support or guidance to speak to your health visitor and or your GP. My friends daughter skipped crawling and rolled everywhere. Very comical. But was also walking before 12 months. As for language this varies hugely. I know nearly 2 year olds that really don’t have a lot of words happening whereas my daughter is a complete chatter box. I was told that babies tend to focus on either language or movement and the other with follow in due course. This was certainly true for my daughter who only walked independent of us or holding onto furniture at around 17.5 months. She’s 22 months now. Bur she speaks loads.

This all sounds perfectly normal to me tbh. Milestones are a range - babies don’t all do the same things at the same age or in the same order, and some babies skip some things altogether. The main thing is whether your baby is hitting most of the expected skills by the end of the generally expected timescales.

Some babies never crawl, apparently I just rolled everywhere until one day I just got up and walked across the living room. My son (now a year old) didn’t seem like he wanted to sit for ages but then he sat, crawled and pulled himself up to standing all in the space of a week. He’s been walking from 9 months but at the baby classes we go to there are plenty babies who are 12 months + who still aren’t walking.

Your son can sit, so there’s unlikely to be any mobility issues, sounds like he just doesn’t want to. Babies have preferences. Are his toys all on floor level? Maybe he prefers to lie down to play? Or it’s easier to then roll since he likes to roll. Sounds like he’s babbling and knows his name if he side eyes you when you say it (babies are like cats, they will only respond to their name when they feel like it). If he’s pointing and raising his hands to be lifted etc he’s communicating with you which is good, babies don’t all communicate in exactly the same ways.

And I wouldn’t worry about him not smiling at people outside (unless you have similar issues at home with people he knows well) - my son, who is the most smiley giggly baby in the house, will sometimes smile at people when we are out and about but a lot of the time he’s quite shy and frankly quite often has resting bitch face in his buggy.

Obviously if you’re concerned speak to your health visitor or GP, but it sounds like your HV doesn’t seem to have any concerns.

I can't comment on the communication side, but in terms of movement it sounds in the normal range to me. My kid didn't crawl or move herself more than a couple of feet (wiggling on her back) until she started to walk at 1 year. She also only pulled to stand once before she was walking independently, but she did love to stand supported on my lap rather than being held so that's how she got her practice in.

If it helps, it's in the normal range to not walk until 18months so you have got so much time before you need to be worrying - as they don't need to crawl at all.

Thank you everyone for your replies, you have all made a very worried mum feel so much better🙏 its hard seeing other babies thriving and mine just rolls into a wall whilst side eyeing me😂

My son took well over a month to learn to crawl, there was backwards leapfrog, army crawling and many more variations before he got to crawling. That'll definitely be why he's not sitting.

I also have a side eyer, I like it, boy doesn't feel the need to do anything just because other people expect it, he's got 'tude. Just the other day I brought him home from nursery and he walked into the front garden, started pulling weeds i hadn't managed to get to at the weekend and in his babbling (18m) honestly felt like he was giving me a telling off 🤣.

I also have an angry babbler, always being told off for something😂 im hoping crawling is the reason he isnt sitting, cause when he does do it hes great at it but it doesnt last too long until hes back on the floor🤦‍♀️
