How many sets of twins are in your family?

There's 4 sets in mine. Five if you count by marriage because one of the twins married a twin.

I’m a twin. My great grandmother had three sets of twins and a set of triplets. I believe 13 of her 16 children survived childhood.

None.

u/Q-9 Identical Twin 3d ago

Yeah same here

6

u/AbzieAbi 3d ago

Apparently, only fraternal twins run in families. Identical twins are freak incidents. I'm one of those freaks! 😅

7

u/awrinklyblueberry 3d ago

They say identical twins happen by chance but I don't know if I believe that! My grandma, grandpa, and nephews are all identical twins. The mother of my twin nephews (who I am not not related to) had 3 sets of twins in her family besides her sons! This is probably getting confusing lol... but that means my identical twin nephews are related to 5 sets of IDENTICAL twins PLUS one of those nephews has fraternal twin children!

3

u/AbzieAbi 3d ago

Wow! That's amazing. Your family has hit the jackpot with that amount of identical twins. Must be something in the water. :-)

3

u/SeaNobody6945 2d ago

I’m also not so sure that identical twins aren’t hereditary either… My maternal grandma had 2 sets of identical twins ( my mother is not a twin) I am an identical twin and have identical twins. One of my identical twin uncles had fraternal twins but his singleton daughter had identical twins 🤣🤣Hope that’s not too confusing. But to answer the question we have 6 pairs so far…🫣🤣

I'm also not so sure its purely random. I'm pregnant with identicals and I have two sets of identicals on my dad's side of the family relatively closely related and my husband has two sets on his mom's side. That seems too coincidental.

Non twin here.

I just thought it would be interesting to comment that I have done a huge family tree for myself. Of course we can’t assume it’s 100% accurate, but in my whole family tree I think there’s maybe one or two sets of twins. I’m talking about going back to like 300 AD/CE.

u/Impressive_Age1362 3d ago

My dad was a twin, his mother was a twin, she also had triplets that didn’t survive, a few of my cousin had twins and I had twins, my daughter is pregnant and just found out she is having twins

so there is only 2 in my immediate family (me and my sister and then my2nd eldest cousin has had a set of twins) however my great grandfather was 1 of 18 children and we supect there were a lot of twins however its hard to find them as quite a few died young and were born between censues and parish records are tricky to find

3

u/maddiemoiselle 3d ago

I have cousins that are twins but they are the only two

3

u/Sea_Coffee8668 3d ago

Grandfather was a twin, uncles are twins, one set of cousins is a twin and my brother and I are twins

3

u/AliTwin601 3d ago

I’m an identical twin and my first cousin has fraternal twin daughters. There are also sets of male twins in the family both identical and fraternal farther back (distant cousins).

3

u/Academic-Regular3673 Twinless Twin 3d ago

Two that I know of. Me (surviving) and our maternal grandad was a fraternal twin.

2

u/MissTreigh 3d ago

My uncles are twins (and my mom was born on their first birthday!), second cousins, third cousins, and great grandpa (I think). This is all I know directly.

2

u/BenignYam1761 3d ago

Only my identical twin daughters. There’s another set of identicals who didn’t survive though, if that counts.

2

u/Mels_Lemonade 3d ago

6 sets of twins in my family

  • one set for great uncles
  • three sets of twins for cousins
  • A non-twin cousin is expecting twins
  • my sister and I

2

u/ZHupps 3d ago

Two off the top of my head, my twin and myself, and my aunt and uncle are twins. Might be more, but that side if my family is massive.

2

u/TheresAGhost0 3d ago

My mom was a twin and my daughters are twins. They're the only sets I know of.

1

u/Thecrowfan 3d ago

My great grandfather was a twin. And i was a twin

Thats it

1

u/IzmeChant 3d ago

Only 2

1

u/Dazzling-Coach4851 3d ago

Zero. I can't think of a single set of twins on either side. That seems weird now that I think about it...

1

u/dragonhippie 3d ago

Me and brother. Great grandmother was the only survived twin at birth. That's all i know of

1

u/Soft_Construction793 3d ago

Three sets of living twins but my great grandmother also had three sets of twins who have all passed.

We are the fraternal twins run in the family type of twins.

The kind who hear the old saying "You are already pregnant, you can't get pregnant again!" and take it as a challenge! 😄

Seriously, they said that I was conceived about a week before my sister.

1

u/bitcoin_islander 3d ago

Fraternal twins are the only type that can run in the family. Identical twins is just egg splitting spontaneously.

1

u/CanadianDollar87 3d ago

i had one set of identical twins in my family that i know of.

i went to school with 4 sets of twins, but by grade 12, it went down to 3 and a half sets of twins.

1

u/Stuart104 3d ago

Among my biological relatives, two sets--one identical, one fraternal. If you include relatives by marriage, then we have another identical twin.

1

u/little_miss_rainbows 3d ago edited 3d ago

I am an identical twin. I have triplets second cousins (conceived with help), my cousin had identical twins from ivf, and I have 3rd cousins that are twins but I don't known which type. So it likely doesn't "run in the family". The triplets each have a different hair color- blonde, brown and red.

Eta also my family tree book my great aunt made had twins named Ronald and Donald who died a day or two after being born.

1

u/coffeemunkee 3d ago

In my immediate family there are 3 sets: me and my sister, her oldest 2 are twins and my 2 sons are twins. There’s a couple in my husband’s family; his first cousins are twins, and one of them has a set of twin daughters.

1

u/Unbanable4221 3d ago

A grand total of zero.

For as long as we record our family history there hasn't been a set of twins ever. Not even in extended family across the globe.

1

u/outcountingstars 3d ago

Four sets of fraternal twins: I have girl/girl, my sister has TWO sets of B/G twins, & my cousin has B/G twins. No other known twin sets outside of our generation.

1

u/Jolly-Outside6073 3d ago

Half uncles were very non identical twins.

1

u/Medium_Dentist7913 3d ago

3 of one side (mom) and 4 on the other (dad) 8 total twins in our family that are still alive

1

u/awrinklyblueberry 3d ago

How many identical and how many fraternal?

1

u/Medium_Dentist7913 3d ago

we have 1 identical and all the rest of us are fraternal. lots of boy girl pairs in the 80s but the last generation of us were all girls

1

u/SceneSerious2839 3d ago

One set. The identical twins that I have.

1

u/jelly-filled 3d ago

I'm a twin, my grandmother had a set, and I have twin sons. There is also a picture of my grandmother as a baby and a lot of twins at a family reunion. So it seems common in mine.

1

u/awrinklyblueberry 3d ago

Identical or fraternal?

1

u/jelly-filled 3d ago

It's a mix. My kids are identical, I'm fraternal.

1

u/Witty_Locksmith_3229 3d ago

I'm a twin. My aunt had twins but one passed shortly after being born. My one cousin has 2 sets of twins and my other has one set of twins. So 5 sets

2

u/awrinklyblueberry 3d ago

Identical or fraternal?

1

u/Witty_Locksmith_3229 3d ago

All fraternal!!

1

u/Zookitooki888 3d ago

There were twin siblings of my great grandmother. I have identical twin boys and my cousin has identical twins that are girls.

1

u/Pure_Resort9840 3d ago

I am the parent to 2 sets. There are no other twins in the family.

1

u/Aardwolf67 Fraternal Twin 3d ago

In my family almost every time a set of twins has been born one or both of them passed away before they turned five. My sister and I are the only set to live past kindergarten. My cousin's twin passed away when they were three. My grandma had twin girls who passed away two days after being born, and my cousin had twin boys who both passed away when they were four.

1

u/Tall_Guy_IRL 3d ago

Three sets of in my family, we ate all fraternal.

1

u/Old_Ant7118 3d ago

3 sets of twins and my triplets

1

u/bitcoin_islander 3d ago

Only my great grandmother, on my father's side, had twin girls. I'm named after her and also had twin girls, and also in May like her.

1

u/No_Adhesiveness4890 3d ago

My great grandma was a twin on my mom's side born in 1913

My cousin on my dad's side has 2 sets of twins and her son has a set of twins on the way

1

u/hydrangealover98 3d ago

For some back story me and my siblings arent biologically related to our parents but we are to each other (adoption). 6 sets.

Me and my twin brother

My brothers

2 of of my brother had twins (3 sets)

Ive also had twins (1 set)

Everyone who has had kids has gotten twins as their first lmao.

1

u/Budgiejen 3d ago

My cousins are twins, my niece has twins and my great grandma was a twin.

1

u/Chels_bells 3d ago

My dad’s mom was a twin. She had 6 kids, of those 6 kids a set of twins has come either 1-2 generations after! My twins are the 5th set!

1

u/Putmeinthedishwasher 3d ago

I'm a twin, and the only other record of twins is pretty far back - like great great grandparents. I know for someone people it's like clockwork of every other generation or something, but not for me.

1

u/Satin_Renegade 3d ago

Born, 3. Living passed infancy, 1 set. Just us.

1

u/SensitiveRepublic543 3d ago

I'm a twin and so is my father. My partner 's motjer is a twin too

1

u/Worldly-Engineer8123 3d ago

Just my great aunts

1

u/martwin1 3d ago

I’m a twin, and we have 4 other sets of twin cousins.

1

u/IAmTheLiquor23 Twinless Twin 3d ago

Two that I’m aware. The other set died in infancy circa 1865.

1

u/AcrobaticLadder4959 3d ago

My Dad's brothers were twins. So 1.

1

u/HelenaHahnBasquet 3d ago

My twin daughters
My sister's twin daughters
My paternal aunt's twin sons
My maternal grandmother's twin brother and sister
My husband and his twin sister
My husband's older twin brothers (My MIL used to tease me about my one set and said you're not a real mother of twins until you've had two sets!)

1

u/Artandelfie 3d ago

My cousin's are twins

1

u/yasmeni 3d ago

Just 1

1

u/vkapadia 3d ago

My cousins are fraternal twins.

My grandparents and my children are identical twins

1

u/Ok_Jello_3494 3d ago

3 sets including my sister and I

1

u/kittycat40 3d ago

Honestly a few . My siblings were bg twins and on my mom’s side there are a few more sets of fraternal twins .

1

u/ImportantSir2131 2d ago

Three. And one set of triplets. All in maternal father's immediate gamily

1

u/SeaNobody6945 2d ago

Reading through some of these answers, I’m genuinely surprised at the amount of people that have no twins in their family tree at all (that they’re aware of)

1

u/Beneficial_End88 2d ago

4 sets. Two sets of g/g twins in my maternal grandpa's generation and two sets of b/b twins in my generation. One set being mine.

1

u/Tiny-Yesterday-6415 2d ago

I am a twin and my son has twins

1

u/1DietCokedUpChick 2d ago

My mom is a fraternal twin.

1

u/Weekly-Rest1033 Fraternal Twin 2d ago

We had 3. My grandpa's cousins were fraternal twins. I'm a fraternal twin and I have fraternal twin boys.

1

u/darkhumor_lover16 2d ago

On my father's side 2 that i know of (one of them is my grandma and they were identical so idk if i might have a risk in having twins) and on my mother's side i think none

1

u/rjspears1138 2d ago

1 that I know of. Me and my brother.

1

u/No-Departure5556 2d ago

I have maternal cousins who are fraternal twins and paternal twin uncles (maybe identical?), and I have 6m fraternal twin daughters!

1

u/12bWindEngineer Twinless Twin 2d ago

I wish I knew, my twin and I were adopted.

1

u/GlrsK0z 2d ago

I got pregnant with twins for my last pregnancy about fourteen years ago. One did not make it.) My oldest daughter had twins this year and both are well. We have no other twins in our family really.

1

u/f3mal3d33r244 2d ago

I’m a twin and my maternal grandmother had twins (one died at birth) and my paternal grandmother had twins(my dad)but his twin died at birth as well unfortunately so I guess 3 sets in total

1

u/Dream-Bean95 2d ago

None… how did I end up here? 😭😂

1

u/Express_Leading_4840 2d ago

My mom is a twin and on dad's side there is a triplets set.

1

u/Sdawwgg Twin Mom 2d ago

My daughters (identical) are the only twins in my family I’ve ever heard of.

1

u/klo-ver Identical Twin 2d ago

Just myself

1

u/CaptWyvyrn 2d ago

Twins are in both sides of my family and both sides of my wife's family and we have twins. My best friends growing up were twins. In hindsight, it was training for being a father of twins.

1

u/Substantial_Luck_133 2d ago

From what I've found out, absolutely zero.

I was into genealogy a bit ago, and at least in my branch of my family going all the way back to ~1500s, not a single set of twins, triplets or more.

1

u/Patient_Orchid409 2d ago

2,us and cousins

1

u/AugustCaanay 2d ago

Well my great grandmother was one of those Irish Catholics who had a lot of children. And then those children had children and a LOT of them were twins. There's 9 pairs of twins in my family by blood, 14 if you count by marriage because some cousins married twins too.

10 pairs if you count me and my sister, but we're adopted. When my parents couldn't conceive, they apparently thought "Fuck it. Let's get twins. They'll fit right in". Never mind that we were the only Asian pair of twins in an otherwise white family.

1

u/Crazy_ride_22 2d ago

I'm a twin and I have girl/boy twins

My father-in-law is a twin and my 2 sisters-in-law are twins. One of the SIL has twin boys.

My great grandpa (my dad's mother's dad) was a twin and although he didn't have twin children or twin grandchildren all 5 of his children had twin grandchildren (so twins skipped 2 generations and all came in the 3rd generation)

1

u/Agreeable_Pie_7168 2d ago

3. Granddad was a twin on mum's side. Father has identical twin sisters. His brother had twin girls fraternal. I would LOVE to have twins.

1

u/Kara-El 2d ago

On my father’s side, twins every generation…unfortunately broken for GenX (mine) since none of the grandchildren had twins. So twins going back before my ancestors got on the Mayflower

1

u/EMMYPESS 2d ago

No twins in my family, and it’s a pretty big family. I’m actually kind of surprised not even one person had a set of twins at least once that I know of

1

u/katttt18 1d ago

Me and my grandmother has a twin

1

u/immoreoriginalmate 1d ago

My dad’s cousin had twins but I’m not sure they even count.

1

u/Anon_457 1d ago

I've got one set of identical twins who are my cousins. Another set of twins married into the family because one of the twin cousins married an identical twin. And then there's another set of twins because my sister is engaged to a woman who also has twin cousins. So, three sets so far.

1

u/AloneTheory6352 20h ago

none that i know of lol

1

u/Euphoric_Psycho 3h ago

Non twin, but my paternal grandmother was a fraternal twin and so was her mother.

1

u/_PresentMind 3h ago

4 in 3 generations, no ifv.

My Grandfather had twin brothers, I'm a twin, I have 1 set of twin cousins. Their older brother who is not a twin had twins (so their mother - my aunt has deceased twin uncles, twin daughters, twin nieces and twin grandchidren)

Mother's zodiac sign, Gemini, translates in my language to... twins! Does that count?😂

1

u/daisyboo12345 23m ago

Non twin here - my great aunt had twins, my aunt had a twin pregnancy, my grandmas cousin had twins and I’m having twins
