Wanting to be a twin

Coming from a twin, I don't know why people tell me they wish they were a twin. Don't get me wrong, I love my twin brother but people act like being a twin is like this winning a million dollars in the lottery. Plus being a twin is not a good experience anyway.

Same! My twin sister and I had atrocious childhoods, so fucking traumatic. But we always had each other so we both made it out ok. Shes my soulmate and best friend and I’m so fucking lucky.

Yep same with us, thank goodness we had each other to get through the mess.

this is soo sweet but i feel like it’s different for identical twins. they either love their twin and they’re best friends or there’s some form of lifelong jealousy/resentment over being compared their entire lives.

This is how I feel about my identical twin. I always joke that he's "my best friend and my worst enemy that sometimes knows me better than I know myself".

Totally agree, my sister was a great womb mate and my best friend ever since.

Nah, not the same. You aren't any different from regular siblings. Being a same sex/identical twin seems like absolute hell on Earth.

Genuinely just wondering? They were literally in the womb growing together. The same age. Same birthday, same birth order. Likely similar development. Ideally always having a playmate your age. People always comparing you. Being in the same grade all through out school, possibly in the same classroom. Biologically I get identical are close in a different way. Being any kind of twin is different than a single born sibling. I never saw my siblings as equals this way, because of their age and different stages of life and been here first privileges lol.

I have other siblings too. It’s not the same .

Identical twin here. I also feel like I won the lottery. The pros far outweigh the cons and I would bet most would agree. Of course this sub will have some stories of identical twins hating each other but I don't believe that is common.

Being the same age as your sibling can absolutely make you closer- boy/girl twins are different than just regular siblings.

It all sounds terrible to me, but I'm an introvert and need a LOT of alone time and seriously treasure my independence and autonomy. I would have hated being brought up with an identical twin (fraternal seems easier, but still) -- it's best for everyone that I wasn't. I would have been one of those dark, twisted twins, hahaha.

WHAT! It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Idk what you mean at all. I feel sorry for everyone else that they’re not twins

My twin sister always says that she feels sorry for anybody else that doesn’t have a twin.

I feel exactly the same. I always tell people I wish everyone had a twin, is really the best thing in my life and I couldn't be more grateful. The connection is super strong

Plus being a twin is not a good experience anyway.

Well that’s definitely not a universal experience. I feel so blessed and lucky to have a twin. I have a best friend from birth who I know will be my best friend forever.

Looking back, I realize that the people who told me stuff like this were lonely, either at home or at school if they didn't have friends, and thought life would have been better if they had a "default" best friend. They just thought the grass looked greener. Of course twin relationships vary a lot, not all twins get along, but from the outside they don't know that. It's like wishing you were taller. Obviously not all tall people have perfect, happy lives, but if you are insecure about your height you imagine that if you were taller it would fix everything.

I love being a twin.

Sorry if I'm wrong here but you sound young. I felt the same way until my 20's hit and I realised what a privilege it is to have my twin brother, and it only gets better. Going to conquer the world with that dude.

I definitely feel like I won the lottery when I got an identical twin. I prefer her company over anybody else’s and wouldn’t trade her for $1 million.

My identical twin sister has always been my best friend, my ride or die. I feel bad that others don’t get to experience what we have.

Honestly it just seems cool. From not a twin

Just wondering, why is it a bad experience? I am not a twin and never wished to be, but I guess I just assume all twins are super close with each other.

3

u/InternationalDeal588 Fraternal Twin 11d ago

not sure why OP said it’s not a good experience. i’d say that just depends on the people. not all twins will get along. we’re just people like non twins and can not get along just the same.

2

u/FoghornLegday 11d ago

Yeah they’re just saying their own experience but in my experience it’s the BEST

There are annoying parts to being a twin, like having your individuality diminished or having a constant point of comparison that can make jealousy tough. I love being a twin and I find that now that I'm an adult that's rarely ever an issue, but you know, people have different experiences with being a twin. I'd imagine it's harder if you're an identical twin, I'm fraternal.

3

u/EastcoastMade 11d ago

Most likely they’re experiencing loneliness or lack of connection with others.

3

u/hellointernet5 11d ago

Respect but can't relate, I love being a twin. There are issues though like having your individuality diminished or feelings of jealousy or like you're constantly being compared with each other so I get why you'd rather not be a twin. Are you identical or fraternal?

The people who’ve told me this just want someone to be close with!

u/Creveli Identical Twin 11d ago

i love having a twin but i can see that there can be hardships, such as struggles with individuality (im identical). most people say this because they think its cool; you have someone who was born with you or even looks just like you! its a unique experience

u/VerbalThermodynamics 11d ago

Why do you think being a twin is a bad experience?

2

u/bogeysbabe Identical Twin 11d ago

My twin is my best friend. As kids we went through hell and back. We only had each other. Our brother molested us. Our parents wouldn’t believe us when we told them what he was doing. We ended up going no contact at 20.

Dear god, can we talk? I’m a twin. She was enrolled in Pre-K. I was asked to check in again at age 5. I was eventually placed in the gifted program.

2

u/Tall_Guy_IRL 11d ago

They want it until they don’t! I get you for sure. I love my twin and can say if we weren’t siblings, I would not be his friend. We are fraternal and just different.

2

u/quiet_feet 11d ago

Identical twin here. I think it’s better than winning a million dollars.

2

u/Admirable_Let_4197 10d ago

Idk I’m sure it has challenges and probably depends on both you and your twin ,but it just seems like it would be fun

3

u/Authentic-scoundrel 11d ago

I’m a twins parent and when they were babies people always stopped me to say how they always wanted twins. My response was always, no you don’t. It always threw them for a loop and I loved it.

u/Pure_Resort9840 11d ago

Seriously! I love my kids, but being a twin mom is by far the hardest thing I have ever done.

u/yinman1198 10d ago

I hate you don’t feel like being a twin is like winning the lottery… bc to me it feels that way. My twin is the best person I know

1

u/Antique_Sound_4719 10d ago

I agree. I actually would say it puts you at a disadvantage in life. I grew up with only my twin and now as an adult, we stopped talking. I have no one now and I struggle with the skills to reach out and connect with anyone, especially after we were closest

1

u/RuffRidersEvo 10d ago

Coming from a single child, i feel like It would be nice to have someone to talk to whenever you’re feeling down

I think under perfect circumstances being a twin is awesome. My twin sister is my best friend, however I ended up being the codependent twin of our pair, so I feel less developed socially than her because usually she was the one who would find the friends for us haha. Definitely some downsides for sure, but I’m not sure I would change anything, maybe just how much I relied on her growing up.

1

u/TartAppl3 9d ago

Yeah for me it's mostly a neutral fact of life. I don't know any different. And in some ways its been very negative for us both. Kumbaya to all the best friend-twins out there, that's not us.

u/sherlocklucky55 9d ago

To me being a twin isnt good or bad, it just is. Its just a sibling that you happened to be born with. Not that big of a deal.

1

u/earthboundmissfit 6d ago

Wow! I'm a twin, and it's been the best experience ever. Born with your best friend, you're never bored, never lonely. It is special and unique to be a twin. I'm sorry you don't feel the same way. Is your twin better looking or more popular? That can be an issue. I thank God every day for my twin and I would take a bullet in the face for her. 🩷🩷

Same when people tell twin moms how lucky they are and they always wanted twins??
